Simeon Skillings (Jr) of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, (1787-1865), was a well known raconteur, athlete and farmer who ultimately came to own most of Bangs Island in Casco Bay off Portland, famously rowed across to Peaks Island daily for several years at about the time of this portrait to obtain an education at the children`s school (he had twelve children himself). Prior really caught the engaging personality of his subject, including direct look, tousled hair, ruddy complexion and gold earring.

JAPANESE WEDDING MIRROR - Meiji Period Paktong or Nickel-Silver Wedding Mirror in fine lacquered box exhibiting mons of the two families on top and sides, nested inside the silk-lined pewter rimmed box you will find a beautifully detailed, signed mirror, having a reticulated disc floated within an engraved hollow displaying the traditional theme of a tree atop an ancient turtle, two birds facing each other above a smaller centered turtle which is holed to receive a missing silk cord, 5" (12.7 cm) diam x 3/4" (1.9 cm) mirror, inside a 5 3/4" (14.6 cm) x 2 3/8" (6.1 cm) box, the mirror is fine, light scratches to box.
