AFTER SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK "Charles I" a portrait study, half length wearing armour and the badge of the Order of the Garter, oil on canvas, unsigned 39.5 cm x 32 cm CONDITION REPORTS The piece has been re-lined and visually appears to have had some restoration though there is still craquelure to the surface in several areas but over all, visual appearance is good. The stretchers and canvas appear to be 20th Century, due to the re-lining it is a little difficult to be precise about the age of the piece but has the appearance of being 19th Century, though looking at the very edge of the canvas exposed in one area, it is possible that it could be earlier. Under ultra-violet light there are several areas of the face that have clearly been over painted where crazing has occurs. There are several areas, particularly to the edges, where heavy over painting has also occurred. Much of the dark area around the shoulders and above also appears to have had some re-painting. The whole piece has been varnished which of course has secured the paint but makes it very difficult to photograph due to reflection. The frame has a lacquered surface to simulate tortoiseshell/ebonised, a slightly red tinge underneath but certainly of a period style though, in all likelihood again 19th Century - see images for further detail
19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Elizabeth Christine Frolich Somerville (nee Wiborg) wife or possibly widow of Thomas Townsend Somerville of Kristiana or Oslo" study of a lady in white chemise and long skirt seated in an elbow chair needleworking, three quarter length, oil on canvas, unsigned 65 cm x 54.5 cm housed in an Art Nouveau style floral decorated swept giltwood and gesso frame CONDITION REPORTS Whilst basically sound, there are signs of craquelure to the paint and slight looseness to the canvas. There has clearly been some repair visible from the back patch and appears to have been mounted in an almost amateur way with heavy nails and an over-folding of the canvas around the wooden framework - see images for detail, though this has clearly been done for some time. The frame appears to be moulded gesso and gilded rather than carved and the gilding requires attention in several areas throughout - again see images for detail. Close inspection of the front of the canvas shows the damage visible clearly from the back to be a rip, now repaired, 18 cm long. Under ultra-violet light, there is a little over painting to the top section of the rip just above her shirt. There is also some sign of over painting to the bottom middle and a little above that on her skirt and to the right which are obvious from the front. There is some paint loss to the extremeties/corners of the canvas - see images for further detail (Provenance: from the family directly, thence by descent)
A Victorian pine single door cupboard of slim proportions, the four panelled door enclosing four shelves on a plinth base 110 cm wide x 212 cm high x 34.5 cm deep CONDITION REPORTS Probably at one point painted as remnants to one groove to left hand side, therefore stripped and waxed though this appears to have been some time ago. There are slight shrinkage signs variously and some light splitting which could be filled with a simple wax. There is no key though the piece is unlocked so a key could be found or fitted. Please speak to the auctioneers who have a supply of keys for you to try should you so wish. Screws to hinges are Phillips screws in part obviously replacements and there is one screw to the door side of the hinge top missing and ditto to bottom hinge. See images for further detail.
