A Victorian sculpted terracotta relief by George Tinworth for Doulton & Co, Lambeth, Gethsemane, circa 1880, rectangular, the figures modelled in the round and in high relief, extensively inscribed with verse, inscribed H. Doulton & Co Lambeth, G Tinworth Sc.; within a green velvet lined mount, later framed and glazed, the relief 14cm high, 32cm wide; the overall dimensions 32cm high, 50cm wideTinworth exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1866 and 1885; in 1875 he showed a series of small terracotta panels depicting religious scenes, which were praised by the critic John Ruskin and resulted in his commission for the Crucifixion reredos at York MinsterIn Marion Harry Spielmann, British Sculpture and Sculptors of Today, 1901, Pp 22-24 , she finely encapsulates the spirit of Tinworth's religious reliefs thus:'Apart from the legitimate designs for pottery and the like, dramatic high-relief panels with numerous figures on a small scale have absorbed the energies of Mr. Tinworth. The popularity of these is out of all proportion to their sculptural merits; yet it cannot be denied that in the spirit that inspires them, and in the deep religious sentiment with which they overflow, there is ample justification tor the public favour. Not for their art's sake, but for the vivid drama and intense passion with which the subjects are presented, they go straight to the heart of the devout or the unsophisticated spectator. They are often rugged in their force; naif, almost primitive, in their conception and handling; and so sincere that we are restrained from an occasional smile at the archaism and the treatment by the perfect sincerity of the modeller...'Condition Report: The relief bears the very minor marks knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use.The modelling is loose in places, commensurate with the design of the work. There is a small loss of light wash to the upper right corner, where the underlying colour of terracotta shines through. There is a short and fine hairline crack to the lower right edge of the relief, possibly a firing crack. Some minor scuffing and denting to the frame. This work has not been inspected outside of its frame.Condition Report Disclaimer
