*Janet Nathan (b.1938) 'WINDOW', 1984 Inscribed on label verso 'For dearest Greetje de Geus - with love and appreciation for all the help and kindness during the exhibition 88, best wishes always Janet Nathan', driftwood, resin and mixed media 42cm wide 7cm deep 77cm high Janet Nathan's works are constructed from a variety of materials - pieces of old boats, driftwood, discarded parts of implements, crates and furniture. Many have been salvaged from the Thames and all show the natural erosion that occurs on abandoned objects. Resin has featured in her work for a number of years and she exploits its reflective qualities to suggest the sensation of light on water. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
A near pair of French silver coffee pots, one possibly by J L A Leguay, Paris 1789, of baluster form, the handles at right angles to the short spouts, one handle detached, the largest 17cm high/Provenance: Spetchley Park/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: 106:Smaller pot, some little dents to cover and to body. Italic initials to side. Larger pot, handle off, some light wear.
A Swiss .800 standard silver altar bell, Bossard, circa 1880, of traditional trefoil design, with pierced Latin inscription below the snake handle 'Dono Dedit Leo XIII Pontifex Maximus' and with further pierced foliate decoration at the lower border, 15cm high/Provenance: Spetchley Park/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: A few dents to pierced inscription and other pierced areas. General light wear but in fairly good condition overall.
An early George III silver dish cross, London 1760, with typical sliding feet and central lamp, approximately 786gm/Provenance: Spetchley Park/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: 178:Hedgehog crest to side of reservoir. Light repair to one pierced anthemion motif and the tip of another is bent and needs repair general wear, needs a clean.
A Victorian Britannia silver mug, R. Garrard, London 1851, tapered cylindrical, applied in bold relief with winged infant bacchanals, masks of the muses, grapevine, etc., monogrammed RVB at the lip, 10cm high, approximately 307gm/Provenance: Spetchley Park/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: 246:Rim a bit bent. Italic initials just under rim, RVB. Dent to edge of foot. Overall light wear.
An 18th Century Irish silver Warwick cruet, probably Richard Williams, Dublin circa 1770, the stand with ring handle and five circular gadroon rimmed stands on a cinquefoil base with shell feet containing three casters and two cut glass bottles with silver tops, with armorial to cartouche at front, 28cm high, approximately 1670gm/Note: The arms are those of Quin impaling Monck and relate to Dr Henry Quin (171801791) the noted Physician who married Ann Monck in the 1750s. CONDITION REPORT: There are some small bends to the frame and light wear, particularly to the armorial but generally sound. Top of one bottle has chipping to rim, this is hidden by cap. Caps have makers mark only. Large caster has slight repairs to pierced cover. Small casters, one has a solid cover (not pierced) the other has an inner sleeve to strengthen it, some damage to piercing. Generally quite worn.
Henderson (James) A History of the Brazil, 1821. 4to., cont. half mottled calf. 2 maps, 28 lithographic plates/Provenance: Spetchley Park/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: Bindings a little scuffed here and there but pretty sound. Some foxing and light staining within. Small tear to margin of large map. Overall a decent copy.
St. John (J. Hector) Letters from an American Farmer, New Edition, 1783. 8vo., cont. calf (lower joint cracked). 2 folding engraved maps /Provenance: Spetchley Park/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: 349:Bindings a bit scuffed. Front edge of spine has slight splitting to top and worm type hole to bottom. Rear edge of spine almost coming away. Some light foxing scattered about particularly near front and back but internally generally quite clean.
A pair of Pinxton fluted coffee cups and saucers, enamelled with simple pendant foliage, iron red enamel P.63 marks/Provenance: Spetchley Park CONDITION REPORT: Lot 449:No chips, cracks or restoration. Light rubbing to gilding on high points (mostly saucers). The cups with some uneven glaze.
A Grainger's Worcester porcelain mug, circa 1820, painted with a bouquet of flowers flanked by gilt initials, JD below an elaborate deep blue and gilt border, printed and inscribed marks, 14cm high/Provenance: Spetchley Park CONDITION REPORT: Lot 459:No chips, cracks or restoration. Overall lovely condition with only very light wear to gilding and a few scratches to blue ground.
A Dutch Delft polychrome vase, circa 1780, painted a Chinaman, the cover with dog finial/Provenance: Spetchley Park CONDITION REPORT: 30.5cm high, cover with several rim chips and a flat chip to front moulded scroll. The body of the vase in good condition with only light glaze chips to corners
A Chinese powder blue ground famille verte plate, Kangxi, with a central reserve of a sparrow on a fruiting branch, the rim with reserves of flowering branches separated by gilt lotus head on the powdered ground, fungus mark, 22cm diameter/Provenance: Spetchley Park/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: Lot 497:Small flat chip to front rim at 7 o'clock. Light stacking wear to edge of well. Enamels and gilding otherwise very good.
