A PAIR OF FRENCH NAPOLEON III ORMOLU THREE LIGHT CANDELABRA (2)With scrolling acanthus arms terminating in bunches of grapes and tiered baluster stems supported by mermen on triform bases with Bacchus mask feet, 38cm highProvenance: By repute a gift from Napoleon III to Robert Jope Slade (1828-1896), the Harbour Master of Torquay when Napoleon III visited in 1871. He was also committee secretary to the prestigious Torbay Royal Regatta, which later move to Cowes to become the Royal Yacht Club. Accordingly, these candelabra were passed down through the vendor’s family as ‘heirlooms’ reputedly gifted by the ex Emperor.

There are nine panels carved in the same style, some with carved faces. Three with 4 by 2 sections of timber still attached. The other panels are flatter relief and stained. There are numerous drill holes - circular holes to accommodate light fittings, probably. One still with a light bulb fitted. Some with splits, water damage and other cut out sections.
