BIGGS RONNIE: (1929-2013) English Criminal, known for his role in the Great Train Robbery of 1963. An interesting T.L.S., R.A. Biggs, one page, 4to, Rio de Janeiro, 27th November 1978, to Tony [Delano, journalist and author of Slip-Up: How Fleet Street caught Ronnie Biggs and Scotland Yard lost him]. Biggs informs his correspondent, in part, 'Just a few lines from bad penny Biggs. I'm still in circulation, busting with health… You will probably be surprised to hear from me, knowing how much I love newspaper people. Recently, I was reading once again, 'Slip Up', and I have discovered certain amazing details which I would like to verify as to being the truth, or journalistic invention. I refer to the passage beginning: “When the warrant for Bigg's arrest…. Said Jack Slipper'… I would be much obliged if you are able to reveal to me the source of your information, and the date and time that the warrant was issued and the name of the magistrate's court. This information is most important....' A letter of good content for its references to Biggs' arrest. Some light surface and corner creases, and two small tears to the left edge. Together with a carbon typed copy of Delano's reply to Biggs, one page, 4to, n.p. (New York), 7th December 1978, Delano responds to the request for information and states, in part, 'I do not think that I can help you with much further detail about the particular passage of 'Slip-Up'. I have every reason to believe it's true - that is that it was Jack Slipper who, while a sergeant, swore out the original arrest warrant against you for the offenses arising out of the robbery. I seem to remember that he told the story himself either to Hitchen or to Vine who later retold it to me…I shall probably be seeing the others either in New York or London before Christmas so I'll ask them just in case they might have kept a note. 'Journalistic invention', indeed!'. Also including three printed pages each depicting the various dust jackets and cover for Slip-Up by Anthony Delano. G to VG, 5
