The first volume contained 300 sayings with a further 450 added in the second volume. All 1529 editions are rare, especially so if complete and in a contemporary binding, as here; this copy is also enhanced by the contemporary annotations with variations, explanations, examples and queries all noted. Agricola (1494-1566) was a Lutheran reformer, initially a friend and follower of Martin Luther, until they famously fell out over the obligations of Christians under law. His collection of German proverbs was originally intended for use in schools and was based on the Adagia of Erasmus.Literature: Adams A353 (incomplete); VD 16 A 956.

The Ferranti Nimrod Digital Computer, first edition, original stiff printed stapled wrappers, very light toning to spine, else fine, 8vo, Hollinwood, Ferranti Ltd., 1951.⁂ First edition of possibly the first known video game manual.The Nimrod computer was built by Ferranti for the 1951 Festival of Great Britain. It was designed to play Nim, an ancient mathematical logic game, and as such was one of the video game machines constructed and certainly the first developed in the UK. Nimrod was tremendously popular and drew in a number of famous challengers including Alan Turing who beat the computer, allegedly causing a malfunction in the process.

He sadly died 5 days after the completion of the final engraving so never lived to see the completed work.

Rare in the dust-jacket, especially so in such excellent condition. Many of the copies were seemingly lost in the bombing of Heinemann's publishing house during the war.

Upon his death the collection was purchased by Frederick III, who transferred it to Copenhagen Castle. It later became absorbed into the Danish Royal Kunstkammer. The first three parts deal with minerals, plants and animals, and the fourth with man-made objects.

Settle binding.- Settle (Elkanah) Eusebia Triumphans. The Hanover Succession to the Imperial Crown of England, an heroick poem, half-title, foxing and occasional browning, light damp-staining to endpapers, contemporary panelled calf with gilt central arms with three griffin heads, wide floriate and leafy roll border with flower tool at corners, neatly rebacked in red morocco, rubbed with some surface abrasion, [Foxon S255], folio, for the author, 1704.⁂ An example of an elaborately tooled Settle binding, commissioned by the author to accompany his verse. From around 1700 Settle earned much of his living and notoriety from sending copies of his verses to wealthy individuals elaborately bound with their arms to the covers. If the book was returned Settle would have the arms altered and the book sent to a new potential patron.

Bosio was the first person to extensively explore the catacombs.
