JOHN RENNIE. THE ELDER.FRSE.FRS.(1761-1821) a rare original and documentary architects, hand drawn watercolour of the proposed plans for a new Aqueduct bridge over the river Lune at Lancaster, as submitted to the council on 24th June 1794, the Aqueduct carries the river Lune on the east side of Lancaster, the plans drawn up were accepted by the Lancaster council,and the bridge was completed in 1797 at a documented cost of construction of £50,000 pounds, a huge sum at this time. The approved agreed plans are signed and dated by John Rennie, chief architect, Alexander Stevens (1730-1796) and Alexander Stevens Junior, eminent Scottish designers and builders, main engineers of the project working with Rennie at this time. Dated 1794. Other relevant documents held by historic environments Scotland, other projects by Rennie around the Lancaster area were the Lancaster canal started 1792 and other various bridges spanning the river Lune .JOHN RENNIE is considered to be the pre-eminent Scottish civil engineer, architect and engineer of the late 18th century, and said to be the greatest British bridge builder of the century, to his merit and fame he constructed and designed many bridges over the Thames in London, London bridge, Vauxall bridge, Waterloo bridge, Southwark bridge, flour mills Southwark and East and West India docks. Other famous major engineering projects he designed and built in Scotland include bridges at Leith docks, peterhead harbour, bridge over the tweed, ken bridge, union street and king street bridges Aberdeen, bell rock light house, Helmsdale harbour, bridge of Earn, just to name a few Scottish projects of merit. He also worked closely with other eminent men of this period and collaborated with them in many famous projects such as James Watt (millwright and engineer) Robert Stevenson (great lighthouse builder) Matthew Boulton (engineer and designer) other projects of merit, Royal observatory cape of good hope, Humber docks Hull, Dublin docks, Liverpool docks, Plymouth breakwater, bell rock lighthouse and many canals, waterways, bridges, docks, harbours throughout the British isles and beyond the Lune Aqueduct document on offer is 37 Inches by 25 Inches,unframed as a scroll, the paper drawing is backed with hessian of the period, a rare documentary survivor of this time, all other known hand approved and signed drawings by John Rennie are held in museums worldwide and major University Institutions in the UK
