Axminster carpet, England, 19th century, 23ft. 5in. x 15ft. 6in. 6.14m. x 4.73m. Hand knotted with all over Shah Abbas design on a walnut brown field. Overall wear, heavy in places; with tears, holes and rips; some repairs with patches verso; small reweave to centre. This most attractive carpet was clearly used in a grand dining hall as can be seen from the pattern of the wear either side of the centre of the carpet. Superb range of colour throughout including ivory, light blue, pink, mid-gold; bottle green, mid-red, greens, orange and browns.
