GRAFTON DUKE OF: (1735-1811) British Prime Minister 1768-70. A scarce A.L.S., Grafton, three pages, 4to, Wakefield Lodge, near Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, 26th August 1777, to William Bick. Grafton thanks his correspondent for their 'sensible & intelligent' letter relating to the Borough and continues 'The considerations for which you think that a single Alderman was most advisable are exactly the same on which I had desired my brother to consider…..for Mr. Rolfe's Election, as to go no farther, unless circumstances at the moment arose to make it eligible', further adding that he hears 'their complaints as affairs from their own mouths' and that he knows 'many circumstances relating to the Disposition…..which it has not been necessary as prudent to impose to any one' and remarking 'I assure you that you are greatly mistaken if you think that I do not aim at every information. I have seen that you have got a better idea than I could have conceived possible in so short a time. Give me therefore credit, & believe that, living there half the year, I must pretty well know the drift of enemies, & how much to fear them. Yet untowardness of my best friends to fall into my plans has often baffled me more than all the rest'. Grafton also explains that he has a person in mind to appoint as his Deputy, but has waited until now to find out how dependable he was, and asks Bick if he could spare three days in November, December or January to assist him and concludes by referring to a point of misunderstanding with the Mayor and holding a 'session to administer the oaths to Rolfe', explaining 'If two days before the Nomination would do, I can be there in time'. Some light age wear and dust staining, only very slightly affecting the text and signature, and with a few neat splits at the edges of the vertical fold, G The present letter is docketed as relating to the Borough of Thetford, close to the small village of Euston in Suffolk where Euston Hall, the country house and family home of the Dukes of Grafton is located. LENNON JOHN: (1940-1980) English Musician, a member of The Beatles. A good, unusual signed and inscribed colour candid 3.5 x 4 polaroid photograph of Lennon, the image depicting him seated in a half length pose, wearing his trademark circular spectacles, alongside the disc jockey Alan Smith (also known as 'Brother Love') in the WFIL radio studio in Philadelphia in October 1975 during a weekend fundraising broadcast for the Philadelphia Association of Retarded Children. Signed by Lennon in blue ink to the upper white border, 'To da Brother, love, John Lennon' and dated 1975 in his hand, further adding his familiar doodle of a face in his hand to a clear area of the image. A rare signed photograph. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the image which detracts little from the appeal of the photograph. VG Provenance: Accompanied by a lengthy and detailed typed statement of provenance signed by Alan Smith and dated 6th October 2017, recounting the circumstances under which the present photograph was taken and signed, in part, 'In 1975, Jay Cook, the Program Director…..somehow, in conjunction with Capitol Records, convinced John Lennon to join us to 'kick off' the event [the WFIL/PARC fundraising marathon of non-stop music] on Friday afternoon…..John arrived early, hung around talking with all of us getting to know our names, sensing our personalities, deciding who was funny and who wasn't…..Over the next day and a half I spent an inordinate (amount) of time (as did my wife at the time) with him around the studio….He was open and charming, extremely bright…..My wife took the picture in the radio studio while we were on the air and when we were looking at it, he took it from my hand and signed it and drew the little face on it….John left early Sunday morning to return home to go into virtual seclusion from the public eye until 1980….'
[SOONG MAY-LING]: (1898-2003) Madame Chiang Kai-shek. First Lady of the Republic of China 1948-75. T.L.S., Mayling Soong Chiang, in facsimile, two pages, 4to, Hankow, Hupeh, 26th September 1938, to '1917 and other Wellesley Friends', on the printed stationery of the Headquarters of the Generalissimo. Madame Chiang states that she is sending her correspondents a book (no longer present) which has just come off the press and is 'a souvenir and record of what has happened in China this past year', continuing, in part, 'Most of the articles were composed under great pressure….and therefore they are not well written. The Publicity Department edited and printed this edition without my knowledge…..I did not see this book until after it was printed. I did, however, choose the cover - and as it was then about Reunion I chose our class colour - cornflower blue. The autographed copies I am sending you are of interest because some of the imperfections are due to the unusual difficulties we are undergoing in Hankow owing to war conditions. At this writing the Japanese army is only 100 miles from Hankow, but we are still here and shall remain, even if doing so means hanging on by the skin of our teeth. We are making the enemy pay dearly for every inch of our territory they are scorching……For the honor of the Wellesley English Department, however, I must disclaim authorship of the article entitled “Upbringing of Children of Revolutionary Martyrs”……One of my friends just yesterday called my attention to it by remarking that “it smacks of chop-suey, flavored with Maggi sauce, and cooked by a Main Street bride from a random recipe given her by a tourist cousin.” When I read it I felt that she was quite justified in making such a caustic comment, although I myself could not burst out laughing at some of the purple patches. Please laugh with me……Let me thank you for helping the war orphans now christened “Warphans”. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG The present letter is dated during the Second Sino-Japanese War 1937-45.
