JOACHIM JOSEPH: (1831-1907) Hungarian violinist, conductor and composer. Conclusion of an A.L.S., J. Joachim, two pages, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d., incorporating five musical quotations. Joachim suggests several Haydn quartets which could be performed, identifying each with a musical quotation of several bars, and also writing 'or the piece with “God preserve”……or any other piece that has not yet been played in March. Decide with Bargheer, because I don't remember which Haydn pieces I've played in Basel so far', further continuing 'A Bach sonata for piano…..is welcome as middle part, especially if Volkland likes to play: B minor, A major or E major. But if you want a solo, then a) Adagio by Spohr b) Sonata in G major by Tartini (Andante, Allegro, Finale). A Mozart Sonata in F major', further penning two more musical quotations of several bars each, before concluding 'or that of Strinasacchi….might be good too'. Some light uniform age toning and a couple of small, neat tears to the edges, nevertheless an attractive example featuring multiple musical quotations. CARUSO ENRICO: (1873-1921) Italian Tenor. Signed postcard photograph by Caruso, with Christmas greeting in his hand to the verso. The image shows the artist in a head and shoulders pose. Signed (`Enrico Caruso´) with surname in bold black ink, with his name alone, across the image. Written to the verso by Caruso, in French, sending his new year greeting `Meilleurs remerciements et mille souhaits pour la nouvelle année´, and addressed to a correspondent at the Royal Opera House of Boston. Postmarked in New York, 23rd December 1910. Stamp removed. Overall age wear and staining, with scratches mostly to the bottom edge and light ink to the name `Enrico´. F

STORCHIO ROSINA: (1876-1945) Italian Soprano. Storchio created roles in several operas by Puccini, Leoncavallo, Mascagni and Giordano including Mimi in Leoncavallo´s La Boheme (1897) and Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly (1904). A rare and excellent vintage signed and inscribed 9 x 12.5 photograph of Storchio, the Esommariva image from Milano showing the Italian soprano standing in a full length pose, in costume. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink to the lower matted border `Rosina Storchio´, also dated beneath in her hand, Milano 1936. Inscribed to the upper border `A Marina Scialapen, Fiore di gioventu  e bellezza con l´augurio d´ogni bene´("To Maria Chaliapin, Flower of youth and beauty with the wish of all the good´) Very light corner crease and few small stains to the matted border, otherwise VG Maria Chaliapin (1912-2009) was the daughter of Russian opera singer Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938), widely regarded as one of the best bass singers of the 20th century.

DELACROIX EUGENE: (1798-1863) French Romantic Artist. A series of original black pen and ink sketches in the hand of Delacroix, unsigned, one page, oblong 4to, n.p., n.d. On a sheet of plain paper Delacroix has executed various preliminary sketches, including a pineapple and other fruit as well as two rough outlines of human figures. With a contemporary annotation signed ('FV') to the verso by Frederic Villot, confirming that the sketches were made by Delacroix, and a more recent pencil annotation to the base of the verso, also confirming that the drawings were made by Delacroix and certified by Villot. Some light creasing to one corner of the page, not affecting the drawings. About VG    Frederic Villot (1809-1875) French printmaker and friend of Delacroix. Villot served as paintings curator of the Louvre Museum from 1848-61.

GULLY JOHN: (1783-1863) English prize-fighting boxer, sportsman and politician. Signed Free Front envelope panel, addressed in his hand to Mrs. Sinclair in Edinburgh and dated Pontefract, 27th August 1834. Signed ('J Gully') to the lower left corner. Neatly laid down to a portion of a page removed from an album and with a newspaper clipping and collector's annotations neatly laid down beneath. Some light age wear, about VG

RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE: (1841-1919) French Impressionist artist. A good vintage signed 8.5 x 6.5 photograph, being a reproduction of one of the artist's still life studies featuring a fish and entitled Nature Morte au Poisson. Signed ('Renoir') in black ink with his name alone to the lower white border. Also signed by the Mayor of Cagnes beneath a short statement confirming the authenticity of Renoir's signature, dated 10th January 1911. The lower border also features the Mayor's official purple rubber stamp. Neatly mounted to a 9 x 9.5 page removed from a contemporary album. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG In the later years of his life Renoir suffered from the crippling effects of arthritis which impacted on his work and he turned to subjects which could be executed in the studio, including still-lifes. Such paintings could be finished quickly, illustrated by the sureness of the long, gestural strokes which define the fish in the present image. Nature Morte au Poisson, an oil on canvas, was originally owned by Renoir's cataloguer, the French art dealer Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939). Vollard, in order to avoid any future disputes regarding the authenticity of works by Renoir, had all the original paintings photographed and then asked Renoir to sign each photograph whilst being witnessed by the Mayor of Cagnes.

LEGER FERNAND: (1881-1955) French painter & sculptor. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 11 photograph, the image being a reproduction of one of Leger's paintings. Signed ('F Leger') and dated 23rd April 1916 in his hand immediately beneath the image and further annotated to the lower photographer's mount, in French, 'La prevue que l'homme descend du singe' (Translation: 'The proof that man descends from the ape') and signed and inscribed 'A Louis Mangel, Son Ami, F Leger' in fountain pen ink beneath. LAURENCIN MARIE: (1883-1956) French Painter and Printmaker, Avant-garde Cubist associated with the Section d'Or. An interesting A.L.S., `Marie Laurencin´, one page, small 4to, on her printed stationery of 1 rue Savorgnan de Brazza, Paris, 23rd November, n.y., in French. Laurencin responds to her correspondent giving her opinion on his work, colours, etc… and stating in part `I think that the page is nice, most of all the reproductions but I like less the small text. Don't´ you think that the roses would have looked better´ At the base, and beneath her signature, Laurencin states `Your colours are astonishing, the yellow, the green, very good. The black of the mantilla is a little pale, or is it only an idea?´ Accompanied by a 5 x 7 unsigned photograph of Laurencin in a head and shoulders pose. DUCHAMP MARCEL: (1887-1968) French painter and sculptor. L.S., Marcel, in pencil, to the verso of a picture postcard depicting the stock exchange building in Copenhagen, n.p. (Copenhagen), n.d. (25th July 1937), to Man Ray. The text of the letter is written in ink in the hand of, and signed ('Mary (M.R.)') by, Mary Reynolds and states, in full, 'The chair is a great comfort & we thank you 1000X. Hope to see you soon after Aug 1st'. Hand addressed by Reynolds. A letter of excellent association between two of the most important artists of the 20th century. CHAGALL MARC: (1887-1985) French artist. A large, signed colour 9 x 13 plate, most likely removed from a book, being a reproduction illustration of Chagall's gouache, watercolour, brush and black ink work entitled La Queue des Sirenes (1945), signed ('Marc Chagall') in dark fountain pen ink to the lower mount and dated at Vence, 1950, in his hand. Some light creasing and a couple of minor stains to the mount, only very slightly affecting Chagall's signature, G La Queue des Sirenes was executed by Chagall in the last months of 1945, at the end of his American exile. One of a series of gouaches, described as being 'among the most marvellous works' that Chagall produced in America, they illustrate the classic of medieval Arabic literature, The 1001 Nights, and form the basis for the lithographs commissioned by the publisher Kurt Wolff, Chagall's first important book with original prints to be published since the 1920s.

PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter. Book signed, being an 8vo softcover copy of Faunes et Nymphes de Pablo Picasso by Andre Verdet, published by Editions Pierre Cailler, Geneva, 1952 and with French text followed by 32 black and white plates from photographs by Robert Picault, each of them illustrating Picasso's work. Signed and inscribed to the half-title page in blue ink by Verdet and additionally signed ('Picasso') by Pablo Picasso in bold red crayon with his surname only at the head of the page. Bound in the original publisher's paper wrappers, the front cover also featuring an image of two works by Picasso. Some very light, minor age wear, otherwise VG Andre Verdet (1913-2004) French poet, painter, sculptor and ceramicist, a friend of Picasso, Cocteau, Matisse, Miro, Chagall, Leger and other artists. Verdet also wrote books on art and composed exhibition catalogues, promoting art and Saint-Paul de Vence, thereby acting as a living link between his hometown on the Cote d'Azur and some of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A good signed and inscribed 6 x 4 postcard photograph by Picasso `Para mis amigos Pallarés, 1917 Picasso´ in Spanish ("To mi friends Pallarés, 1917 Picasso") Signed and inscribed in bold brown ink to the verso of a postcard showing to the front Picasso´s early work Verre et Bouteille de Rhum (1914) ("Glass and Bottle of Rhum"). Attractively framed and glazed beneath a 6 x 4 image of Picasso´s painting Verre et Bouteille de Rhum, identical to the image shown to the front of the postcard, to an overall of 14.5 x 17.5 (37 cm x 17.5 cm). With very slightly light ink, otherwise G to VG The present autograph provenance is from the Pallarés family collection.Manuel Pallares i Grau (1876-1974) met for the first time Pablo Picasso, five years younger, the first day they assisted to the School of Arts in Barcelona in 1895. Since that day and until Picasso´s death, they remained friends, a friendship which last 78 years. Pallarés worked as assistant to Picasso´s father, teacher at Llotja, and replaced him when he retired. From 1896 to 1899 they spent long periods together, studying and on holidays. Pablo would spend over eight consecutive months at Horta del Ebro, village where Pallarés´ family home was located, to recover from scarlet fever. Later in his life, and during few days journey of Pallarés visiting his friend Picasso, Pablo recalled how Pallarés saved him from falling and dying drowned in a mighty river, mentioning that he didn´t know how to swim at that time, and recalling that he said `I will never forget that you have saved my life"

A wonderful, large vintage signed 9.5 x 11.5 photograph, the image depicting Picasso standing in a bare-chested full-length pose, wearing a pair of shorts and a pair of alpargatas upon his feet as he poses in a garden with several bushes and tall trees in the immediate background. Signed ('Picasso') in blue ink with his name alone to a clear area of the background at the head of the image. MIRO JOAN: (1893-1983) Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramicist. A.L.S., Miro, a large example of his signature filling three-quarters of the page, two pages, 4to, Palma, Mallorca, 15th August 1980, to Mataraso, in French. Miro writes a warm, friendly letter, stating that they think of his correspondent a lot and often talk of him, further embracing him with all their heart in recognition of a long friendship. At the base of the first page Miro has drawn an arrow and added his large signature to the second page, also signing on behalf of his wife, Pilar, and further adding a simple abstract drawing in his hand beneath his signature. Double matted in white and framed and glazed (to show both sides) in a dark wooden frame to an overall size of 17 x 21. DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist artist. Book signed and inscribed, being a softcover edition of Dali…Dali…Dali by Max Gerard, an abridged edition published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York, 1974. Signed and inscribed by Dali in blue ink to the head of the first page of text, 'A Richman, Dali', and dated 1979 in his hand. Dali has cleverly incorporated a drawing into his signature, the initial D taking the form of a snail's shell as the mollusc glides along a leaf from which three droplets of water descend. Bound in the original colour illustrated paper covers and featuring many black-and-white and colour illustrations. Contained in a handsome custom designed dark navy-blue quarter leather and cloth clamshell box with a gilt stamped title to the spine. Some very light, minor age wear, VG

Book signed and inscribed, being a softcover edition of Frank Kupka by Louis Arnould Gremilly, published by Jacques Povolozky & Co., Paris, 1922, being number 274 from a limited edition of 500, signed and inscribed by Krupka in blue fountain pen ink to the recto of the frontispiece portrait and dated 11th February 1950 and in his hand, and additionally signed and inscribed above by Louis Arnould Gremilly, adding the date Paris, 21st January 1950 in his hand. Bound in the original paper wrappers with a decorative front cover printed in blue, red and black, the French text ('L'Orphisme at les Tentatives de F. Kupka') interspersed with various woodcuts and other illustrations, and also including a bibliography and various commentaries on Kupka's works. With a couple of loosely inserted pieces of printed ephemera relating to Kupka. Some light overall age wear, minor foxing and some light age toning and small tears to the edges of the wrappers, G The first monograph devoted to Kupka and published a year after his first solo exhibition in Paris.  Jacques Povolozky (1881-1945) also owned the gallery La Cible, located on Rue Bonaparte in Paris.

MILLAIS JOHN EVERETT: (1829-1896) English Painter, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. A.L.S., J Everett Millais, one page, 8vo, Cromwell Place, South Kensington, 12th April 1869, to John Sedgwick. Millais states that he is in the first year of his Honorary Secretary ship of the Artists General Benevolent Fund and remarks 'I am very anxious that the receipts shall not fall short of other years, and I take the liberty of asking your best energy in the acquisition of subscriptions'. MORRIS WILLIAM: (1834-1896) English Textile Designer & Artist, associated with the Arts and Crafts movement and the Pre-Raphaelites. An unusual D.S., with his initials W M, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.1891). The printed document is a proof page, numbered 78, from the Kelmscott edition of Poems By the Way (1891) and features a large decorative woodcut initial W at the commencement of Thunder in the Garden. MUNNINGS ALFRED: (1878-1959) English painter, particularly known for his studies of horses. A.L.S., Alfred Munnings, two pages, 8vo, Castle House, Dedham, Essex, 24th May 1947, to Carys (?). Munnings announces 'Your two pictures were a very pleasant surprise to us when we discovered who had done them' and continues to explain 'They were hung long before I knew you did them. I said to one of the hangers this is a nice landscape; who did it? We then looked at the label & found it was yours', further writing 'Where do you intend working? You surely would do well if you were right in the country. You could paint landscapes without any interruptions & get such different subjects. If you intend trying some spot where you could stay I'm pretty sure we can let you have funds'. In concluding Munnings asks for a reply before Thursday morning as he will be attending a council meeting at the Royal Academy that day. KNIGHT LAURA: (1877-1970) English artist. A.L.S., Laura Knight, on two sides of her personal printed correspondence card, St. John's Wood, London, 25th May 1936, to Admiral Sueter. Knight states that both she and her husband, Harold, will be delighted to accept her correspondent's invitation and continues 'Please forgive me for not answering before, but I have been living in a torment of work which had to be finished in a hurry' before concluding 'We are looking forward to coming so much'. NICHOLSON BEN: (1894-1982) English painter. An illustrated A.L.S., Ben, four pages, 8vo, Porta, Ticino, Switzerland, 1st November n.y. (1960s), to John. Nicholson thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'I must say that for some reason we find you both very easy & enjoy your company', further adding 'I'm only sorry that F[elicitas Vogler, his wife from 1957-77] was feeling so lousy & not at all her lively self - something that will pass, there's been, we now gather, a kind of walking around with flu & it's prob. that'. The artist continues 'Wendy [Blood] & I played a lot of my kind of t[able] t[ennis] while Victor [Pasmore] & Feli talked - she must be quite distinctly good at the normal game. I'll send you sometime the measurements of the board - the height depends on the bounce (on the surface & thickness of the table)…..The small side shots at an acute angle off the board are dangerous against a first rate player as he easily gets there & the height of the board shld be determined by a slow shot, a full length slow drive, even the best players who can take the most appallingly fast flat shots off the wood are paralysed by this bec. it might always hit the table so that they cannot make up their mind whether to allow a bounce or a table miss & its slowness creates a slow reaction or in the middle of a fast rally no reaction at all' To the third page of the letter Nicholson has added three drawings in his hand, one showing the trajectory of a table tennis ball across the table and the other two of small tennis table bats and balls. LAM WILFREDO: (1902-1982) Cuban artist. A.L.S., Wilfredo, one page, 8vo, Zurich, 6th June 1961, to Harold Gramatges and his wife, in Spanish. Lam writes a warm letter to his friend and announces that their small, great country now has another Cuban citizen, 'Born in Copenhagen, in a clinic, on the 24th May 1961. The official in charge of his registration registered him as Eskil-Soren Lam-Laurin. Male sex for the good health of all of us'. Lam further sends his wife's regards ('and a Viva Castro') and remarks that his son is fine and that they will depart next week for Italy. Two small staple holes to the upper left corner and a few minor, light creases, otherwise VG Harold Gramatges (1918-2008) Cuban Composer & Pianist. Lam fathered three sons with his third wife, Lou Laurin, whom he had married in 1960.

Whistler writes, in full, 'I am shocked to find that I have not answered as I meant to do your kind note of invitation. I shall be delighted to come if it be not too late and you still will have me. NOLAND KENNETH: (1924-2010) American painter. A.L.S., Kenneth Noland, one page, folio, n.p. (New York), 6th November 1972, to Lawrence Diefenbach. Noland states that he has been building a new studio and moving from his old one and has therefore not had the time to reply earlier although hopes that his correspondent's exhibition was a success, continuing 'I don't think that an autograph or an autographed photograph would have added to your exhibit, but I did want to let you know how much I appreciate your effort', and further writing 'You asked me which one artist that I consider has influenced my work the most. I would have to say Paul Klee. I studied his work the most. There are many others, Matisse, Picasso, Pollock and the older masters especially Titian'. Flaxman writes a summary of a lecture on sculpture which commenced with a summary recital of 'the Treasures of Ancient Art & Literature possessed by the Moderns notwithstanding the destruction of time & war' and states, in part, that it 'shewed those remains were in general sufficient for our information concerning the state of knowledge in different periods of Antiquity…..the Argonautic expedition, the Theban & Trojan wars produced no great alteration in the manners or polity of the Greeks - but the contest with Xerxes which struck the first fatal blow to the Persian power & made way for the  3d. great Monarchy of the world (the Grecian) stimulated the spirit of Greece to the greatest efforts - then in the constellation of illustrious characters, Socrates, Plato….Euripides & Sophocles, Phidias appeared & superint[end]ed the buildings of Pericles, Temple of Minerva, described, her statue of ivory & gold 30 feet high…..the Venus, Cupid…..by Praxiteles were particularly noticed…..The schools of sculpture were Athenian, Sicyonion, & Rhodian. EPSTEIN JACOB: (1880-1959) American-born British Sculptor. Collection of ten A.Ls.S., Jacob Epstein, nineteen pages (total), 8vo, Hyde Park Gate, Kensington, 28th October 1953 to 10th June 1954, each to David Hardman, secretary of the Sir Stafford Cripps Memorial Trust. In the first letter Epstein invites Hardman to come and see the bust of Cripps, explaining that it is not finished however adding that Lady Cripps is also keen to see it, and explaining 'I am a little uncertain about showing it yet to Lady Cripps who of course will have a not unnatural anxiety about it & I want really a decision from you before I show it [to] her'. The sculptor also comments on being shown an unsuitable place in St. Paul's that had been allocated to the bust although adding that he now understands he can choose any place he wishes for the memorial. In his second letter Epstein thanks Hardman for a payment of £337 and announces 'Tomorrow I am showing the bust to Lady Cripps, not without some trepidation! I think I have interpreted Sir Stafford in the right spirit.' and in further letters discusses the inscriptions to appear on the bust, preparations for sending the work to the foundry ('I have been today to the foundry & the more I think of it the less I like the idea of glasses on the bust. After all God made Sir Stafford without spectacles'), also requesting the final payment from the committee, updating Hardman on the progress at the foundry, discussing his thoughts on the pedestal ('Dove silver grey will look very fine & show up the bronze.'), and also commenting on a meeting at the foundry ('The reception….was somewhat curious I thought. The ecclesiastic talked as if we were attempting a crime when I asked about the site of the bust & Mr. Attlee was like a frozen turnip. A somewhat chilling affair.'), stating that he hasn't the heart to battle with the Cathedral authorities and also asking for confirmation of the date of the unveiling and requesting 5 or 6 tickets to give to friends who would like to attend ('I recall that the Dean hinted that a crowd would not be welcome! What a silly idea….I don't mind in the least the vagaries of the ecclesiastical mind. Of course it is their cathedral.') and in the final letter Epstein thanks Hardman for 'photographs of [the] great event, when we were shoved out after half an hour' and asks if he saw Tom Driberg's account? An interesting series of letters. Agam thanks his correspondent for their interesting letter and continues to refer to a film, writing 'Could you please sent me as soon as you can one copy to Paris, of course I will cover all expenses, or will give you a painting as we have decided. You will soon have the recording of the Hebrew and French wording for the film'. In a postscript Agam enquires as to whether Forma will be coming to Paris or Israel in the summer, commenting 'I will be during August in Israel and will be delighted if you could come then. I want to take your copy to Israel. Maybe I could get some orders for it.'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Agam and signed ('Agam') by him in the return address to the verso. Sandy seems to have turned against Saul (?) & is now only interested in his “Henry VIII” & the possibility of getting & more powerful management for “Royal Past” - I think he folded up rather too quickly before giving us all a last chance for suggestions, but maybe we have waited too long' and further writing 'I'm going to have some people - not many - to lunch on Thursday next - at one o'clock & would be thrilled if you could come here. KANE BOB: (1915-1998) American comic book writer and animator, co-creator of the superhero Batman. A brief T.L.S., Bob, one page, 4to, Lido Hotel, Lido Beach, New York, 12th July 1974, to Ray Roberts at the Macmillan Publishing Co. in New York. Kane writes, in full, 'Enclosed are the estimated figures (no longer present) that you asked for on Batman. May I hear from you at your earliest convenience so that we can get started on my Autobiography' and in a postscript provides his telephone number at the Lido Hotel. With several ink annotations, presumably in the hand of Roberts, noting that 7,000 people attended comic conventions and that between 25-30 were held in America each year. Some light age toning to the right edge, only very slightly affecting the text, GIt would appear that Kane's desire to have his autobiography published by Macmillan never materialised and it would not be until 1989 that Batman and Me was published by Eclipse Books, specialists in comic book publications during the 1980s and early 1990s.

Blackstone acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter and sends 'Thanks with great sincerity on behalf of Lord Abingdon, Captain Bertie, & myself, for Your Lordship's successful interposition with Lord Sandwich which I hope the young Gentleman's conduct in the Command you have so obligingly procured Him will never give You reason to be sorry for', continuing 'If I knew when the important Business, that now falls under Your Lordship's care, will permit You to retire to Wycombe, I would endevor (if possible) to pay You my Respects for one Night. But Your Lordship's Department is an Object of such interesting Consequence, that I almost despair of that Pleasure. [CAPONE AL]: (1899-1947) American gangster and crime boss during the Prohibition era. A long-stemmed crystal white wine glass previously belonging to Al Capone, the cut bowl attractively etched with floral motifs and with a decorative, shaped stem featuring a finger rest, and the base also decorated to the edges. The glass measures 8” in height and has a 3” diameter at the rim. Angus and Son, states, in part, 'Whereas during the Night between Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th of April instant, the House of Sarah Duncan, in Pandon, was robbed of Bank Notes, Gold, and Silver, to a considerable amount, six Gold Rings for the Fore-Finger…..a small silver box….and a Quantity of valuable wearing apparel', continuing to offer a reward for the suspect, 'And whereas Rebecca Coxon, who absconded from the House of the said Sarah Duncan, during the Night above-mentioned, stands charged with having committed the said Robbery, a reward of Ten Guineas, and all Expences, will be paid by the said Sarah Duncan, to any Person or Persons who may apprehend…..Rebecca Coxon, and securing her in any Gaol', and also providing a description of Coxon, 'She is between Eighteen and Nineteen Years of Age, nearly Six Feet high, stoops forward in walking, fair Complexion, coarse Featured, light grey Eyes, light Hair, a Dimple on each Cheek, and has a remarkable long Neck, large Hands and Feet, and turns in her Toes when walking; she is a Native of Stockton, and speaks that Country Dialect; she had on when she went away, a light buff spotted Gown, white Petticoat and Stockings, and a Straw Hat'. The broadside, printed by David Bass, states, in part, 'Miss Betsy Warding, an exceedingly sprightly filly, a good figure, carries a lofty head, goes extremely well, and shows a smart leg - she has never yet been beat, which is something remarkable - and is often airing with Miss Britannia, a light chestnut filly, by a son of Neptune…..seemingly possessed of all the blood and spirit of her fire, and is allowed to be one of the most accomplished creatures now on the turf - The former generally runs in blue and black hat, the latter in white and straw - Stable, near Pandon Bank….The handsome Grey Filly, a noble looking animal, remarkably genteel and comely, and whose long continued celebrity on the turf is well known by the Sportsmen in this neighbourhood; and appears to have been train'd in the Military School, as she once ran away with an Officer…...The famous Caledonian Filly continues on the turf with unrival'd success. But unfortunately she is rather restive, apt to throw her rider, and has twice run off the course…..Miss Modesty….a slender filly….late the property of Dr. Skeleton, is a dull looking animal, but not apt to stumble, and runs over the course very easily….Miss Lillyput, a remarkable neat little creature…..she is not a very handsome filly, but as swift as a hawk….Her stable is at no certain place, but is often airing in the Bigg-market…..Mrs Taty's filly promises to be an ornament to her stud, as much pains have been taken in her training. BURGESS GUY: (1911-1963) British diplomat and Soviet Agent, a member of the Cambridge Five spy ring that operated from the mid-1930s to the early years of the Cold War era. Book signed, being a hardback edition of The Captain from Connecticut by C. S. Forester, First Edition published by Michael Joseph Ltd., London, 1941, bearing the ownership signature ('G Burgess') of Burgess in bold pencil to the front free endpaper. Also bearing the bookplate of Kim Philby (1912-1988) British intelligence officer and a double agent for the Soviet Union. The slim oblong 12mo bookplate features Philby's name ('H. A. R. PHILBY') within a decorative border and is neatly affixed to the front pastedown. Bound in the publisher's sand coloured cloth and with blue title to spine. Lacking the dust jacket. An interesting association copy bearing the rare signature of Burgess. Some staining to the boards and light overall age wear, G It was Harold Adrian Russell 'Kim' Philby who, in 1935, recommended to Soviet Intelligence that they recruit Guy Burgess as an agent. Philby was also responsible for tipping off Burgess (and the spy Donald Maclean) that they was under suspicion of espionage, prompting them to defect and flee to Moscow in May 1951.

CASANOVA GIACOMO: (1725-1798) Italian Author and Adventurer. An excellent and lengthy A.L.S., `Giacomo Casanova´, with his full name, three pages, 4to, Dux, 11th January 1790, to Count Antonio Collalto ('Your Excellency, my Beloved Patron'), in Italian. Casanova thanks his correspondent for his letter which he has just received and states in part `.. especially interesting seems to me the election of Counselor to your Excellency of Count Odoardo, your dignified son. An appointment which grants a noble and wise member to the senate.´ Casanova further refers to Prince Ruspoli and makes an amusing comment `…considering that Bacchus and Mars have never been my favourite divinities..´ Further again, Casanova mentions a new he has received related to Mirabeau, and expresses his contempt for the French author, stating `I have received today the news that the bestial Mirabeau, chief of the rebels assassins who dethroned the Christian King, is dead as a result of the wounds received on a duel. This death distresses me because I had the hope of meeting him somewhere, kill him and watch him die. He is an infamous writer who has dishonoured crowned heads and famous writers, and among them our illustrious Abbot Boskovitch who he treats as an ignorant.´ Before concluding, Casanova comments on the Emperor´s health stating `I wish that His Majesty the Emperor and King will recover his lost health and that he will enjoy it for long without having any further troubles, surrounded by his loyal servitors, listening to the good advices he receives from the wise people who abound in his court.´ Some very light overall age wear and very small stain to the third page edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise about VG     Count Antonio Collalto - Italian Nobleman and Military officer. Roger Joseph Boscovich (1711-1787) A Polymath from the Republic of Ragusa. An extremely interesting life the one of this Jesuit Priest, also Physicist, Astronomer, Philosopher, Poet, Diplomat.. Boscovich made multiple contributions to astronomy. He discovered the absence of atmosphere on the moon in 1753.Joseph II (1741-1790) Holy Roman Emperor 1765-90. The Emperor did not recover as Casanova was wishing and died only a month later.

Madame du Barry makes a payment to Marie Antoinette’s dressmaker BERTIN ROSE: (1747-1813) French Marchande de modes (milliner), known as the dressmaker to Queen Marie Antoinette. Bertin was the first celebrated French fashion designer and is widely credited with having brought fashion and haute couture to the forefront of popular culture. An extremely rare autograph D.S., Bertin, one page, oblong 8vo, Paris, 25th May 1778, in French. The manuscript document is a receipt issued by Bertin to Madame du Barry and states, in full, 'I have received from Madame La Comtesse du Barry, through the hands of Mr. Gadot, the sum of 600 livres as part payment of her account'. A wonderful association piece between the legendary modiste and her most famous client after the Queen herself. Some very light, extremely minor foxing, VGJeanne Becu (1743-1793) Comtesse du Barry, the last chief royal mistress of King Louis XV of France and one of the victims of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution.

T.L.S., Elizabeth Arden, one page, 8vo, New York, 4th January 1952, to Mrs. Stadler. Arden announces 'How very sweet of you to send me such luscious avocados! I just adore them…and you are a darling to think of me' and continues 'I hope this new year will be a wonderful one for you, brimming over with good health, good fortune and happiness', further adding that she plans to fly out to Los Angeles in about a week and is 'looking forward to a good, long talk about everything'. Scarce. Some light age toning to the lower edge, otherwise VG
