James Humbert Craig RHA RUA (1877-1944) COUNTRY LANE WITH FIGURES, 1917oil on canvassigned lower left; signed again and dated on reverse; also with John Magee & Co. [Belfast] label on reverseP20 by 15.5in., 50 by 38.75cm.This is a very similar painting to A Lane in County Down, painted by James Humbert Craig in 1916 and exhibited at the RHA in 1917. When that picture was offered at Whyte`s on 16 September 2003 as lot 82 Dr S. B. Kennedy wrote:Although J. H. Craig was born in 1877 he began to paint seriously only around 1910 . Thus, while he was thirty-nine in 1916 when he painted this picture, it is, in reality, an early work. In these years, during which he lived with his parents in a large and commodious house, `Craigalea`, at Bangor in Co. Down, his subject matter was in the main drawn from areas close to home, namely Bangor, Groomsport and the shores of Belfast Lough. Only occasionally did he spread his wings to the north Antrim coast and Donegal and those other areas with which he is now so closely associated. A Lane in Co. Down, therefore, marks the end of the earliest phase of his work and looks forward to the whole of his later career…" Both A Lane in County Down and the present work show a touch of the French Barbizon school in both composition and tone. Both are atypical examples by the artist who, as Kennedy notes, "…generally preferred to record with uncanny realism the essential visual effect of a scene. Or, as John Hewitt more poetically put it, to catch `the swift notation of the insistent effect, the momentary flicker, the flash of light, the passing shadow`, attributes which might be regarded as the hallmark of his art. The loose Impressionist palette and brushwork, however, are typical of Craig`s oeuvre in general."
1943 BSA M20 Reg.no. KTO 498 Frame no. WM20 2096178 Engine no. WM20 2096178 The M20 evolved into one of the longest serving motorcycles in the history of British military motorcycling, as well as becoming the most numerous type produced for WWII with 126,000 in active service, so therefore many are still in use today. This motorcycle still retains its original matching numbers frame and engine and was first registered on the 15th April 1948. This originality is thought to be highly unusual for a military motorcycle. This bike has most of the military accessories of the period, including field stand, engine bash plate (these are pattern items), original front mudguard lower stay, convoy tail light and rear panniers (although the bags are not of the correct type, however they are ex WD haversacks and are dated 194? And 1943.This motorcycle was in regular use between 2002 and 2009, although it has seen limited use since. By the time of the sale the vendor hopes to have completed one last adventure on a trip to Snowdonia, N. Wales. It should be noted by the old MOT certificates that the annual mileage between 2002 and 2007 seems very high, this was due to an error with the mileometer. A replacement was fitted in 2007 and the mileage after this date is more accurate. It is MOT’d until June. Bidding is taking place on our sister site i-bidder.com Click here to bid
1958 Velocette Valiant Reg.no. 382 KVX Frame no. 2124/33 Engine no. 200/1772 Launched at the 1956 Earl’s Court Motorcycle Show, the Valiant had a 192cc engine and it was a development of the ‘LE’. It had a two piece cover that enclosed most of the crankcase and gearbox. The air cooled overhead valve engine was mounted in a duplex frame with a single top tube with a bigger crankcase and cast iron cylinders with steel pushrod tubes and alloy heads. Examples of the Valiant are rarely seen today and are an ideal machine for club runs, being light and easy to maintain. We are advised that the bike is running and the gearbox has not presented any problems. Bidding is taking place on our sister site i-bidder.com Click here to bid
1969 Triumph T100C Reg.no. HHW 172G Frame no. XC07703T100C Engine no. XC07703 In 1960 the T100 was completely redesigned in the new ‘unit’ style and called the T100A. A long line of models including the T100C appeared throughout the 1960’s. This motorcycle is in very good overall condition, having clearly been restored some years ago. It was last taxed in 2008 and was also run very recently following a short period of little use. The late owner cherished this motorcycle and now it comes to the market looking for a new custodian. The bike may require some light re-commissioning. It is sold with a file of paperwork that includes V5C, old MOT certificates and parts catalogues. 1928 Morris Cowley 2-seater and dickey Reg.no. YW 7841 Chassis no. 259534 Engine no. 292201 William Morris was competing head on with Austin, for the same market, and produced equally good solid cars with great reliability. In 1926 the Bullnose radiator was replaced by a flat version in a new version of the Cowley. By 1931 over 200,000 had been produced in various body styles. The car we have here was purchased from an elderly gentleman in 1985, who had owned the car for a number of years. About 24 years ago, the current owner took the car off the road, following a few years of use, pending some restoration. The vendor states that the engine is free and the car is in overall good condition, although will require some restoration. It is sold with V5c and is an ideal candidate for VSCC events, being both light to use and a straightforward restoration. Bidding is taking place on our sister site i-bidder.com Click here to bid
1925 Singer Ten Tourer Reg.no. PE 1710 Chassis no. 1943 Engine no. G1920 Car production began for Singer in 1905 with a 15hp machine and over the next six or seven years the company persisted with larger engined models. After WWI the company concentrated on the 10hp model and these affordable cars were not only roomy but light on the steering due to there being only rear wheel brakes. This open tourer model has formed part of the Colyford Motor Museum for the past ten years or so and has not run in this time. We are led to believe that prior to this, the car had been in regular use as a wedding car. Little is known of the car’s history and mechanical condition although it appears in good useable condition. There is a colour differential between the body and bonnet, but otherwise the car presents well. At the very least the car will require fully re-commissioning but will be very rewarding once on the road. It is sold with current V5c and an earlier V5c.
