An extremely rare 10 3/8" moulding plane by THOMAS GRANFORD (mark G+ 1661-1713) probably the earliest identified British planemaker, with Hildik iron. Until last year this was the only recorded plane marked on the toe by Thomas Granford "at length"; one other similarly marked plane has recently come to light giving credence to the mark. This plane and the confusion with the Francis Purdew planes are discussed in the remarkably well researched "The Case For Francis Purdew or Granfurdeus Disputatus" and "Early Planemakers of London" both by Don & Anne Wing, (a copy of both are included in this lot. The other plane discussed in the book marked T.G on the toe will be available for inspection at the auction) The plane was discovered in America by Paul Kebabian and, for the past 22 years has taken pride of place in the Wing collection, now returning to England for the first time. Not the prettiest moulding plane in the world but possibly the most important (to be sold without reserve) G

Salvin" and "W. Salvin, May 15, 1839"; 4 of plants, from 75 x 105mm. to 175 x 105mm., annotated on versos in pencil "April 1839, W. Salvin", "May 1839. W. Salvin" (x 2) "[?] from High [-]oile, Salvin, 1829", one of the armorial bookplate of W.T Salvin Esq., annotated "May 16th 1839, W. Salvin", & 3 totally faded; all somewhat faded, one creasedNote: These must be amongst the earliest "photogenic drawings" produced in Co. Durham. First conceived in England by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1834, photogenic drawing is the first photographic process capable of producing negative images on paper. The inventor did not publicize his experiments until the Daguerreotype was introduced in January 1839. The first photogenic drawings were produced of flat objects (plants, fabrics, drawings or manuscripts, etc.), being placed directly on light sensitive paper, following the principle of a photogram. Talbot had presented his discoveries of photogenic drawing to the Royal Society in January and February 1839, and it is therefore likely that William Thomas Salvin (1767-1842) or his son, also William Thomas Salvin (b. 1808) was present at Talbot's Royal Society lecture and was inspired by it to make some of his own photogenic drawings in May 1939.

ALBERTI, LEON BATTISTAL'ARCHITETTURA. CON LA AGGIUNTA DE' DISEGNI Venice: appresso Francesco De Franceschi, 1565. 4to., architectural wood-engraved title with arms and devices of Cosimo de' Medici (dedicatee), oval woodcut portrait of author on verso, 82 woodcuts in the text (1 double-page), historiated woodcut initials, later vellum, edges worn and joints splitting, top of the title page just trimmed, title page a little discoloured and general light paper discolouration throughout, some neat early marginal repairs to first few leaves, some water staining of the last few leaves and the index leaves water stained and with some neat early repairsNote: USTC 808306. First quarto edition of Cosimo Bartoli's Italian translation. The woodcuts are reversed copies of the folio editions of 1550 and 1565. Alberti's celebrated ten books on the theory of classical architecture (first published in Latin in 1485) became famous through the vernacular translations of the 16th century. The new dedication to Cosimo de' Medici explains the need for a further edition due to the great demand for copies of the Florence 1550 folio imprint.
