Majestic oil on canvas, after Anthony Van Dyck, of a full-length portrait of George Gordon (1592-1649), 2nd Marquess of Huntley. Huntley (or Huntly) had been brought up at the English court and in 1639 raised forces for the King. Sir Anthony van Dyck (Flemish,1599-1641) is one of the most important and prolific portraitists of the 17th century. He is also considered to be one of the most brilliant colorists in the history of art. Painting is in excellent overall condition, commensurate with age. The medium is oil on canvas, it has been lined in the past and appears to be mounted on original stretcher bars. There is a notable stain on back of lining canvas that corresponds to a small indent on the front of painting off the left shoulder. Under black light inspection there are two small areas of repairs (bottom left and bottom right, approx 1 x 1 inch), and evidence of inpainting in both areas. There are two other noted small repairs: above the right knee and in the right background. All areas of repairs have been nicely inpainted, as revealed by black light inspection. There are frame rubs/abrasions along top edge of painting and along right side. Flesh areas appear to be intact; this magnificent portrait is in great condition considering its age. Approx Overall size: 92 x 57 inches. Approx Sight size: 85 x 50 inches. Please note that all sales are final. No refunds will be given under any circumstances.
