Demetre H. Chiparus (1886-1947) 'Antinea'. Impressive cold-painted and patinated bronze and ivory figure, circa 1928 on marble and onyx base, base marked Etling Paris 26½ in. (67.4 cm.) high. Queen Antinea was the grand-daughter of Neptune and Clito, the last Kings of Atlantis, and through Cleopatra Selene, also a descendent of the Ptolemies of Egypt. Antinea keeps an underground mausoleum of red marble with 120 alcoves where she keeps the numbered and labeled bodies of her former lovers, lost soldiers and explorers. The bodies have been preserved forever by being dipped into a metallic bath of sulphate of orichalcum, the famous, legendary metal of the Atlanteans. At the center of the room is an orichalcum throne where Antinea will eventually sit and rest for eternity once all the alcoves have been filled.Listed in art Deco Sculpture by Victor ArwasProvenance: Private local collection, by descent and in the same family for over 40 yearsPLEASE NOTE: THIS ITEM CONTAINS OR IS MADE OF IVORY.
