Early Victorian Light Company Officer’s Wings. A very rare and magnificent example worn by a Light Company officer. The straps edged with scarlet cloth and silver “Corded Enniskillen”, and faced with three rows of silvered metal chain on silver lace backing. The “horns” similarly edged and faced with three tapering rows of chain, the outer edges bearing a row of silver bullion. At the junction between the strap and the horns, a prominent dome of burnished white metal, mounted with superbly- gilt bugle-horns within a laurel wreath. The straps lined with red leather and fitted with brass slides inscribed ‘Buckmaster Latest Improvements 1842’. Small white metal button to straps, bearing crown within a scalloped edging. Right hand wing with two bullion tassels absent and four partially detached, leather lining of strap worn by contact with shoulder-belt. Retaining string of left-hand wing absent, otherwise VGC for age.

Redesignated 5th Corps in 1880 becoming 1st VB Highland Light Infantry in 1887

Badge. 85th Foot Victorian Officer’s shoulder belt plate circa 1840-55. A mid 19th century example. Gilt rectangular plate mounted with silver wreath, half laurel, half palm; within the wreath an oval crowned silver strap inscribed “Aucto Splendore Resurgo”; to the centre, a silver strung bugle with “85” between the cords and a scroll flowing over the knot inscribed “The King’s Light Infantry”. At the base of the wreath, the single honour “Nive”; beneath the wreath a tri-part scroll inscribed “Fuentes Donor” “Peninsula” Bladensburg is absent. Reverse retains one of two hooks and two stud. Traces of gilt only (Parkyn 414) The 85th was granted the title “King’s Light Infantry” in April 1821. It served in Malta and at Gibraltar from 1821 to 1832. The 85th served in North America from 1835 to 1842 and was despatched on horse sleighs across heavy snows from New Brunswick to quell disturbances in Quebec in the winter of 1838. After North America the 85th saw service in the West Indies, in Ireland under the command of Lt.Col. Brook John Taylor and Mauritius under Lt.Col. Manley Power. Became 2nd Battalion KSLI on Friday 1st July 1881
King’s German Legion George III Officer’s gilt open-back coatee button circa 1804-15. A fine scarce unmarked example. Crown over ‘K.G’ with ‘L’ below. Complete with shank. VGC Approx. 18 mm. Raised late 1803 as the King’s Germans, redesignated in 1804 and soon comprising infantry, light infantry, cavalry and light cavalry.

FREDERICK HAMILTON MARCH - an 'Australian Hero' (1881-1977). A ship's stowaway (from Sydney) at the age of thirteen, he spent some years in N. America - especially at General Motors (Detroit) working on cadillacs, returning in 1913 to his homeland with some of them, as a demonstrator / salesman. Later that year (with the future General Freyberg) he set out for the Mexican Revolution, but they then travelled back to England to enlist for WW1 - serving in the Royal Naval Division at Antwerp and Gallipoli. Later with the Australian Light Horse he served in Egypt and Palestine, and being seconded to Lawrence's Arab force he completed that tour of duty by driving the former into Jerusalem for the meeting with Allenby. Postwar saw him running a Cairo car hire business, and he was driving the Sudan Governor-General, Sir Lee Stack, in the city (1924) when the car was ambushed; all three occupants were wounded, Stack dying shortly afterwards. For his undoubted quick reaction & bravery at the time, March was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal (later superseded by the George Cross). During WW2 he served in the Middle East as a civil engineer (? possibly R.E. attached) Comprises: 18 line t.l.s. from R.V.
