About VG Onorato Visconti (1585-1645) Italian Roman Catholic cleric and papal diplomat who was appointed inquisitor for Malta by Pope Urban VIII in 1624 and as apostolic nuncio in Warsaw in 1630. Visconti was recalled to Rome in 1636 and although Urban VIII did not consider Visconti's performance satisfactory, Wladyslaw IV took the opposite view and proposed him for elevation to the cardinal's dignity because of his imperial privilege. However, the Pope found Poland's demand unacceptable, referring to a decree of the Council of Trent which said that only those candidates who belonged to the respective nation would be admitted, and to a bull of Pius IV that only Princes could make a recommendation in whose jurisdiction the candidate lived. The dispute over this continued for four years without reaching a conclusion. Despite repeated requests from Wladyslaw IV, the Barberini Pope never considered Visconti for the cardinalate and even ignored him at his last cardinal elevation on 13th July 1643.

BENTHAM JEREMY: (1748-1832) English Philosopher, Jurist and Social Reformer. A fine, long L.S., Jeremy Bentham, with several holograph corrections, five pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (post 1802), to Baron de Lessert. In an elegantly penned letter Bentham writes to introduce his friend Edward Blaquierre, 'Now for the occasion: Eyes such as yours are of course continually in their travels over the habitable globe viewed through a French medium, the scene exhibited by the regeneration of Spain can not but be familiar to you: not so, perhaps, through an English one. Edward Blaquierre, a most serviceable friend of mine, is in no inconsiderable degree, qualified to satisfy any curiosity which that scene may have left unsatisfied. He is of the noble Irish family of that name. The head of the family - a Sir John Blaquierre - being a parliamentary leader and one of the proprietors of seats in the House of Commons', also explaining that Edward Blaquierre is a naval Lieutenant and was in command of a ship in the Mediterranean 'and in that capacity distinguished himself in various ways, amongst them by saving a Bey of Tunis from an insurrection' and that 'In the world of letters he is known to advantage by several works: one of them entitled "Letters from the Mediterranean"in which some mention, I believe, is made of the Tunis adventure' and further commenting 'there is a good deal of the Irish enthusiasm and a little more than enough of the Irish impetuosity and eccentricity in his turn of mind....amongst his eccentricities was that of sticking into that work of his an enthusiastic passage or two about the delight of Codification coupled with the mention of a name so little worth it as that which began this already too long letter'. Bentham also informs his correspondent that he had not heard from Blaquierre for some years when he received a letter from him 'on the point of embarkation on a visit to Spain with two declared objects: one of these was the giving in that country what notoriety he could to my works: the other, not then explained, but which has since turned out to be, the writing a history of the revolution, the news of which had just arrived here. Not only unpaid but unasked by me, or anybody else, he has been working for me with as much zeal as the highest paid ambassador could manifest in the service of his Monarch: and to that zeal, I am indebted for that notice from the cortes, of which some not very correct accounts, I believe, have found their way into some of your well-disciplined and well-purified newspapers. He continues full of gratitude for all the service he has done me'. Bentham states that Blaquierre has been married for a year and is currently residing in Paris ('a place of abode which the state of his finances renders a rather more convenient one than London') and is occupied in the completion of his history of the Spanish Revolution, continuing 'The liberty, I am thus taking with you, is, on his part, altogether unasked and unexpected. It would be a real satisfaction to me to bring together two men so worthy of each other: but my respect for both of you forbad my annoying either of you by a letter of introduction, which I have no title to give, and which it might be unpleasant to the one to receive, or the other to deliver: should, therefore, any intercourse have place, it is with you that it will commence'. The philosopher also writes of Blaquierre's proposed renovation of a property near Montpellier and continues to reflect on previous meetings with his correspondent and their wife at their home in Paris in 1802 as well as pleasant days 'at a place I had for four or five years in Devonshire', remarking 'Madame la Baronne, your wife, who was then skipping about from room to room in a state of maiden innocence, can not possibly have had cognizance of my existence, unless it were by the gloom with which the sight of a stupid old man, with deaf and aching ears, may have damped the gaiety of the rest of the company' and also writes of a Mr. Garnier, whom he believes has now been made a Marquis, observing 'If he is a man like other men, and in particular like other Frenchmen, the evidence I gave him of the impression made upon me by his discoveries in relation to the monetary system of ancient Rome, as detailed in his translation of Adam Smith, did something for me. Should Mr. Blaquierre become known to you, perhaps you might give him the additional honour of being known to Mr. Garnier'. Bentham concludes his letter with an anecdote concerning his correspondent's mother, 'One person of your family, the remembrance of whom (would you think it?) is still a source rather of uneasiness to me than satisfaction, is Madame de Lessert, your mother. Yes; for the chance of breaking your ladies with a laugh, I will give them matter for one, though it be at my own expense. At that dinner of which I partook at your house, there were, I suppose, not so few as twenty in company, all of the masculine gender - all of them compleatly unknown to me. As we marched in procession from the drawing room to the dining room, I observed Madame de Lessert's hand stuck by her side, waiting for some other to take hold of it. It had never entered into my conception that the honour could be designed for any such insignificant person as myself: observing, however that the hand still remained single, I perceived my mistake: but it was then too late to attempt repairing it, without encreasing, instead of obliterating, the ridicule. If the lady be still giving the family the benefit of those virtues, of which I heard so much, and to which the evidences were so visible in her countenance, lay me at her feet. I beg of you, communicate to her this my confession, and, if she gives me absolution, Blaquierre, without trouble to your pen, might be the bearer of it´. Some extremely light, very minor age wear, VG Jules Paul Benjamin Delessert (1773-1847) French Banker & Naturalist.John Blaquiere (1732-1812) 1st Baron de Blaquiere. SARTRE JEAN-PAUL: (1905-1980) French Existentialist philosopher, playwright, novelist and literary critic. Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1964, which he declined. Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, one page, 4to, n.p., (Paris), n.d. (November 1953), in French. I knew Yves Farges a few months before he died….From the first try, he seduced me by his silent power, by the patience of body and mind with which he listened to opponents, by the authority of his brief answers, which revealed the depth of his convictions, and…..by the warm friendship he bore to all men, by this confidence….that he showed to everyone. At the Congress of Vienna he went from group to group. He tirelessly questioned the delegates - all the delegates, taking all the care of which he was capable of freeing the currents which stirred this great crowd; he was everyone's living link with everyone, he wanted to take into account all our wishes and made himself the interpreter for the other organisers….we knew….that he was one of the main architects of this Congress…..what I admired most in him was his passionate taste for direct contact and this love so alive, so concrete of Democracy in action'). Accompanied by an A.L.S., J P Sartre, one page, 4to, n.p. (Paris), 17th November 1953, to Madame [Farge], in French. Sartre apologises for his delay and expresses his sympathy and the deep esteem which Farge inspired in him, also informing his correspondent that he will unfortunately not be able to go to Austria because the adaptation of his play Kean 'passé ce soir en “générale” et il faut que je sois aupres des acteurs toute le semaine qui suit' (Translation: 'is on tonight in “general” and I have to be with the actors all the time next week'), adding that he hopes to be freer later and have the opportunity to express his respectful friendship personally. Farge, a progressive politician close to the communists, participated in the founding of the Mouvement de la Paix in 1947 and served as the organisation's president until his death in a car accident in Georgia on 31st March 1953. While the World Congress of People for Peace, which was held in Vienna from 12th - 19th December 1952, is generally viewed as Soviet propaganda, Jean-Paul Sartre counted it among the most important experiences of his life. His participation marked a major turning point in his evolution, insofar as it publicly confirmed his status as a fellow traveller of the Communist Party.

HOME! SWEET HOME!: Henry Bishop (1787-1855) English composer of the early Romantic period, famous for the song Home! Sweet Home! A.L.S., Henry R Bishop, four pages, 8vo, London, 14th July 1848, to J. G. Jones. Bishop remarks that in the last letter he had received from his correspondent they had indicated that they may visit London, but presumes that this did not transpire, also referring to some accounts from Oliviers that were not intended to be received by Jones or Miss Thornton ('They have all however been paid') and further writing 'I regret that the “Muses” are met with so little favour in the north: here, if they put on a foreign garb they are received with acclamation; but if their dress be home-spun, Alas! for them, poor wretches, they may starve. It is a pity, nay more, it is seriously impolitic, there should be so little patriotism, in that respect, in this kingdom; and it is decidedly in the power of the merchants and middle classes not only to “get up the steam” but to turn the tide the other way'. Together with a second A.L.S., Henry R Bishop, one page, 8vo, T[heatre] R[oyal] D[rury] L[ane] (London), n.d. ('Saturday Evg'), to a gentleman. Bishop asks for 'as many more pieces (choruses particularly) as possible of the new opera (or operetta)' and adds that he will attend an appointment 'to consult on the alterations', although remarking that it may be better taking place at his apartments on Frith Street in Soho; John Howard Payne (1791-1852) American actor, poet and playwright, creator of the song Home! Sweet Home! in 1822. Ink signature ('John Howard Payne') and seven additional lines of text in his hand on an oblong 12mo piece clipped from the conclusion of a letter, the text stating, in part, 'Once more let me repeat my apologies for this intruding on you, and my reliance upon your sense of its proceeding from a proper precaution and a just confidence in your goodness of heart and eloquence and influence'; Adelina Patti (1843-1919) Italian opera singer who famously sang Home! Sweet Home! before Abraham Lincoln and his wife at the White House in 1862. A.Q.S., Adelina Patti, to one side of a 12mo card, New York, 18th December 1881. In bold purple ink Patti has penned the words 'Home sweet home! There is no place like home, - Craig-y-Nos Castle'. Some light age wear and age toning, most noticeable to Bishop's second letter. G to generally VG, 4 The song Home! Sweet Home! was adapted from John Howard Payne's opera Clari, or the Maid of Milan, and the melody was composed by Henry Bishop with lyrics by Payne. Bishop 'relaunched' the song in 1852 and it became a very popular parlour ballad in the United States during the American Civil War and beyond. When Patti sang Home! Sweet Home! at the White House, the Lincolns, mourning the death of their son, were moved to tears and requested an encore of the song.

DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. A very fine A.L.S., A Conan Doyle, four pages, 8vo, Maloja Hotel, Maloja [Switzerland], 1st August 1895, to [James] Payn. Doyle's unusually lengthy letter begins in a social vein, 'How I wish I could waft you up here, for it is a very charming place, but decidedly inaccessible to any man who is not very robust….I see from the Illustrated that your wit and cheeriness never fail you, but I know that in your case that is no proof of health or strength', before continuing on the subject of his present literary endeavours, 'I have been very busy on the…..prize fighter book of which, I think, I said something to you. I think it will work out fairly well, but I dare not be too sanguine. I remember that you were disposed to think that I was dealing with an unsavoury subject in the prize ring……But I hope that it may justify itself. I think I have done it in such a way that it is picturesque and not offensive, though I have two big fights in the book. It has never yet been done, as far as I know, and yet the Ring is the one typical Anglo Saxon sport which has never existed outside English speaking countries, and which has now, I believe, a very deep hold of the people - in spite of the unspeakable state to which it has been reduced. In the old days it stood for chivalry, gallantry & fair play, and I am sure I would rather fight in the lists with lance and sword than stand up to a good man for a hundred rounds, as far as the bravery & endurance which is needed goes. I hope when it comes your way that you may think I have made it interesting.' The author returns to his social and sporting activities, 'Our chief amusement here is to play golf, but as the grass is very thick & long the game gives you a lot of fresh air with very little exertion, for at your first drive you lose your ball, and then you spend your day, with intervals for meals, in walking round in circles and looking for it. [John] Hare is here and I believe [Squire] Bancroft & [Arthur Wing] Pinero are expected, so we feel that we are quite a dramatic centre', and also comments on his holiday reading, 'Of course you have read Morrison's "Mean Streets". It seemed to me to be very good indeed. I have just finished "The Honour of Savelli" but did not care for that so much….Books are the great difficulty out here, for the hotel library has only got as far as Bulwer Lytton'. In concluding Doyle refers to the health of his wife ('very well & bright') and their plans to have their own house built by the end of the next summer, 'I bought the land, but the Tyndalls now claim that there is a right of way through it. I recall a painful story I read somewhere of a man who had actually finished his house when such a claim was made & proved. As a result he had the whole parish continually passing in at his back door and out at the front one. Warned by it I shall settle this matter before I build - and I have no doubt we shall arrange it all right'.
