A Light and Airy Mid-18th Century French Ivory Fan, the guards and gorge decorated in bronze in a linear design. The double cream silk leaf complements this approach, with vertical bands, alternating painted pink roses and green leaves with embroidered and intertwined green and gold sequins. To the top and sides, a gold chainstitch embroidered outline undulates as a border and passes down through the painted flowers, this adding to the shimmer as the gold catches the light. The verso is plain. Guard length 10.5 inches or 25.5cm, Together with A fan leaf with a design of 18th century Lords and Ladies at a ball, uncut, unsigned, undated, printed onto lightweight cream silk. The ladies, grandly dressed in elaborate robes, ruched and tucked and décoletée, carry open folding fans. The gentlemen, in long patterned coats and plain breeches, wear curled wigs. Depth of leaf measured at the centre approx. 5.1/8 inches or 13cm. Span from bottom right corner to bottom left approx. 17 inches or 43cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . Fan 1 - wear to the silk mainly on the verso, and lower edge, best seen from the verso. Some splitting to the folds on the verso but the recto appears strong. Wear to the bottom left prevents the fan from closing cleanly.Fan 2 - as new and clean.

The verso is painted with a rural Italianate stone building with archway leading to a courtyard. Contained in a 19th century cream card Duvelleroy fan box. Guard length 11 inches or 28cmSee page 186 of the tome by G Wooliscroft Rhead for a framed fan leaf with an almost identical scene, stated as probably being by J. Goupy CONDITION REPORT: . A Novelty Cigar Cockade Fan, from the outside appearing as a genuine cigar, with red and gold label bearing the name of "B. Perez Mendez El Guajiro", the lid pulling up to reveal a cream paper cockade fan, simply painted with fresh pink flowers and green leaves. The verso is plain. Height when opened 12.25 inches or 31.5cm. Thirdly, an Italian olive wood souvenir cockade fan of the type produced in Sorrento, late 19th century, this example painted with a bird in flight and "Ricordo" (souvenir), a mirror inset into the verso. Finally, an Italian olive wood souvenir cockade fan of the type produced in Sorrento, late 19th century, this example painted with a lady in local costume, dancing, and "Ricordo" (souvenir) on the verso. Los 4050

Death and The Maiden: A Very Unusual Fan, the monture of plain light pink mother of pearl, the coffee coloured silk satin leaf painted both sides. To the recto, a scene of a young man or prince sheltering under a large tree, taking respite from the weight of the deathly pale maiden dressed in white on his shoulder, as the Grim Reaper approaches from across a river bank, pink flamingos paddling to the background, carrying his spade, his robe belted with a cross on a chain **. To the verso, painted on a darker ginger silk, two cherubs hold flower garlands, decorating entwined initials, a green dragon and a banner beneath, dating the fan to the 11th February 1885 (or 1895), possibly in Portuguese. One word could be a name beginning with A which would relate to one of the initials. No signature noted. Guard length 12.75 inches or 32.5cm. Together with a bone fan, 19th century, the pale pink cotton leaf painted with a gentle scene of a shepherdess being pursued by her beau. Signed Guronnet (?). The verso of plain cream cotton. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm (2)In many great artworks, a maiden is portrayed as wearing white, with long cascading tresses, as the Grim Reaper approaches. Is the river in this depiction signifying the river Stix that the dead must cross on their way to Hades?**An alternative offered by an FCI member is that the figure is that of a Carmelite monk wearing a brown habit and a Christian cross. The monks were known to dig graves and indeed there is one here***Another alternative offered by an FCI member considers that that this scene depicts a version of a painting by Girodet that is at the Louvre (The burial of Atala), depicting the tragic love story of Atala or the love of two savages in the wilderness that was written by Chateaubriand (died 1848) that gave Girodet the subject of one of his most popular paintings. Set in primitive America of the 17th century, Atala is the story of a young Christian metisse who falls madly in love with Chactas, an 'Indian' whom she has saved from a death sentence. Taken in by a missionary, Father Aubry, after a long 'walkabout' the young lovers cannot live out their passion. Trapped by the vow made to her mother to dedicate herself to religion, Atala chooses suicide in order to avoid succumbing to her passion, despite Chactas' willingness to convert so as to be able to marry her. CONDITION REPORT: . The first fan has repairs on the shoulder to both guards. A sliver of mop is missing near the top of the upper guard. One gorge stick is loose from the rib, a repair having failed, and the lower edge of the leaf is a little stained, probably from attempts to secure the gorge sticks. Similar residue is apparent here and there near the side and top edges. The smaller fan is sound, save for loss to the top border binding the layers together.

Los 4052

A Large Late 19th Century Bone Fan, the monture plain, the double fabric leaf of cream silk, painted in soft pastels with a mountain scene and featuring a winged lady. Signed by G. Samperé?, the central feature is a lady with butterfly wings, hovering above the ground, dark curly hair cascading over her shoulders, her dress ethereal. The verso is plain. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm. Together with a monogrammed female ostrich feather fan c.1890's, the monture of tortoiseshell, the loop fitted with an elaborate silk tassel in ruby and black, the cord further fitted with a plaited silk ring with which to hold the fan closed when not in use. Overall height 16 inches or 41cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . the bone fan leaf is slightly damaged along the bottom edge, where a loose gorge stick has moved and caught the silk. The verso is worn to one fold, wear as on the recto, and light brown staining that does not transfer through to the recto. The feather fan is sound but the feathers are a little thin in places.

Los 4055

An Early 20th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the pearl white, and gilded with flowers. The cream silk leaf is backed with fine cream gauze, and painted with a central scene of a courting couple and another young lady, in Regency dress with high waist and puffed sleeves, the gentleman in tailcoat and bicorn hat. The reserves are painted with flowers in pastel pinks and blues, matching the dresses, with the addition of minute multi coloured sequins and a fairly stylised painted border. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm. Together with three other fans in various states of disrepair, comprising a mid-19th century bone fan with wide fretted sticks, the double paper leaf lithographed and hand coloured, showing a group of young ladies gathering flowers for garlands, two young men hiding behind bushes, seemingly holding hand mirrors, willing the many winged cherubs and Cupid, ready with his bow and arrow, to favour them. The verso shows a scene of wealthier Society at leisure, the ladies in silk gowns and lace, their suitors in capes and ruffs. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm: a white Mother of Pearl fan, gilded with a simple design, the double paper leaf lithographed and hand coloured and showing a well-dressed family group with children and a dog, at leisure in the outdoors, the verso another scene of young ladies wearing perhaps regional European costume relaxing with mountains in the background. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cm; finally, an early 20th century bone fan, simply clouté with silver metal, the cream gauze leaf embroidered throughout with silver sequins in band of various depths and design. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm (4) CONDITION REPORT: . The first fan is in good clean order save for some light discoloration/spots and some splitting to the backing gauze. The second fan has a broken frame and some sections are missing, the leaf is slightly damaged in the centre and the very top gold edging has some loss. The third fan has extensive damage to the monture. Some leaf folds are splitting but not seriously. The final fan has damage to the gauze but the monture would possibly be useful for a lace maker.
