A MID VICTORIAN SHELL CAMEO BROOCH OF ANTINOUS CIRCA 1870 The oval bullsmouth shell cameo carved with the profile of Antinous, wearing a crown of ivy leaves with a lotus flower coronet, within a gold setting with floral etched decoration Size/dimensions: 6.7cm long Gross weight: 22.6 grams After the colossal sculpture which was found during excavations in 1792-1793 in an area presumed to have been the villa of Hadrian at Praeneste, today Palestrina, it is now housed at the Vatican museum. Antinous was the Emperor Hadrian's (117-138 A.D.) favourite who at just 19 years old drowned in the waters of the Nile in 130 A.D, and was subsequently deified upon Hadrian's orders.
