A Frog he would a-fishing Go, first appearance, in Nister's Holiday Annual 1896, 5 colour plates only (of 6), numerous plain illustrations, some very light marginal browning and occasional light soiling, cracking at gutter, several pages coming loose or loose, hinges weak and cracked, original cloth backed-pictorial boards, scratching to covers and some soiling, extremities rubbed, 4to, Ernest Nister, 1896.⁂ Includes Beatrix Potter's first published illustrations - nine drawings with her initials for, A Frog he would a-fishing Go (verses by Clifton Bingham). In 1894 Potter had written to Ernest Lister with her story of the frog character Jeremy Fisher, seeking its publication as a booklet. The proposal was turned down, but eventually nine of her drawings were purchased by Nister to accompany Bingham's verses. The frog drawn here bears a clear likeness to Jeremy Fisher, and she later bought the drawings and blocks from Nister to avoid any complication arising from copyright issues.

There is a small white blemish to the left of the sitter's right shoulder but this looks like it might have been part of the artist's original intention. Unexamined out of glazed frame. Condition Report: The blue pigment has become very prominent in the sitter's face and hair. Light surface scratches throughout, most noticeably there are two vertical scratches to the upper right quadrant, approx. 1.5 and 2cm respectively. One or two light spots of surface dirt, largely isolated to the sitter's coat. There is a very small spot of paint loss (approx. 1cm) to the left framing edge. Unexamined out of glazed frame. The backing card with tape applied to the extreme edges, and also with some skinning. The text is smudged but still largely legible. The backing glass and mount verso is loose but stable. Some very light discolouration to areas of the background, together with some light surface dirt and scratching. The miniature has slipped in the frame slightly and there is a very slight hint that the ivory is starting to bow. Unexamined out of glazed frame. Hope Springs: Some discolouration to the green pigment in the trees which has now turned brown. Some of the applied detail to the forest floor has been lost at the extreme edge but this is barely noticeable. There are also traces of associated glue residue, but this will have been present since the works conception. There is no crack to this miniature, and therefore this is on a separate ivory sheet to the portrait to the obverse. The miniature has slipped in the frame slightly. Unexamined out of glazed frame. Condition Report: The card appears to have been extended at both the left and lower edges and this is largely visible in the online illustration. There are a number of surface scratches to the card, most notably to the upper right quadrant. Some light spots of surface dirt throughout. Light fading, most notably to the sitter's face. Light rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges but this is barely noticeable. Unexamined out of glazed frame. The frame with some surface dirt under the glaze. There is an area to the back of the sitter's collar where it looks like the lighter pigment my have discoloured slightly, but it is not clear whether this is the case, or whether this was the artist's intended impression. Inspection under UV reveals no evidence of restoration or repair. The brooch mount is broken and missing the pin. Some light scuffs and surface dirt to the glaze (recto) and some heavier nicks to the glazed aperture (verso). Light surface scratches throughout commensurate with age. Condition Report Disclaimer

A further area of retouching (approx. 5mm) can be seen in natural light to the very bottom of the sitter's sash - this is also visible online. Some light craquelure to the brown pigment.
