12.5 x 8 cm card signed by Canadian Lt Col John Keefer Mahony VC CD. On 24 May 1944 Major Mahony led his company across the Melfa River in Italy under heavy artillery fire. His task was to secure a bridgehead for the 1st Canadian Corps to break through the Adolf Hitler Line. Threatened by vastly superior forces, Mahony?s company managed to hold the bridgehead for 5 hours until reinforcements arrived. In 2 German counter attacks, his men destroyed 3 enemy self propelled guns and a tank - a significant feat considering they had no anti - tank guns! He suffered 3 wounds, but inspired his men and directed the fire of the light anti - tank weapons on hand. For his exemplary leadership and courage in this action, Major Mahony was awarded the Victoria Cross. Lt Col Mahony died in London, Ontario 15.12.1990.An extremely rare signature. Good condition.
