A 19th Century French Gothic style oak dining table, the top with moulded edge above a tracery carved frieze raised on carved rope twist supports united by a galleried stretcher to sledge type base, (Provenance: Originally came out of The George Hotel, Winchcombe) 153.5 cm x 75 cm CONDITION REPORTS Top does not fit base properly, later additions to the base where the base meets the table, corners are generally knocked and chipped, table top with some light scratches and impressed marks and some splits mainly to edges, frieze to top with some decoration missing, some small chips and evidence of old repair holes, chips to corners, base with some impressed marks, scratches, small chips and additions of newer sections of wood, general signs of wear and tear throughout.
A nest of five Ercol light elm "Windsor" rectangular occasional tables, 51 cm wide x 39.5 cm high - 33 cm wide x 30 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Working from largest table to smallest - Table 1 : small impressed marks to top, some small scratches to top, small faint white mark to top, white paint to right-hand side plus also other stains to right-hand side. Table 2 : small scratches and impressed marks to top plus some very small chips throughout, stretcher at back broken and missing. Table 3 : impressed marks and faint scratches to top and sides, some very small chips to front edge. Table 4 : some small impressed marks and faint scratches to top, some very small chips to front edge. Table 5 : some impressed and other scratches to top and sides, small chips to front edge.
JOHN BELLANY (1942-2013) "Woman of the Dornoch Firth", study of a woman with fish, oil on canvas, signed top right, titled to the bottom, 76 cm x 61 cm (ARR) CONDITION REPORTS Overall some light general wear and scuffs, scratch near the right margin of picture to the cream and blue background, frame has some knocks, bumps and chips, but overall picture appears to be in reasonably good condition.
JOHN BELLANY (1942-2013) "Bethel", study of a bearded man, monochrome watercolour / wash, signed and dated 1982 bottom left within the image, and signed again bottom right, 55.5 cm x 37 cm (ARR) CONDITION REPORTS Picture has some light general wear and dirt, slight undulations to paper, some slight yellowing, frame is in very distressed condition with quite a lot of chips and losses to the surface.
JOHN WHITE (1851-1933) "Silver and gold on the Axe near Axmouth", watercolour heightened with white and body colour, signed and dated, bears "Richard Hagan Broadway Gallery" label verso 27 x 45 cm (ARR) CONDITION REPORTS Overall some light general wear, there is a small black blob to the left of the lady's apron, but otherwise picture appears to be in good condition, frame has some wear and scuffs and separating at joints.
JOHN EMMS (1843-1912) "Three black pigs in a woodland", oil on canvas, signed and dated '73 bottom right, 27.5 cm x 37.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Undulations to surface and to canvas, some areas of loss to the paint including to the centre of the top half of the picture (please see photos), frame with various cracks and chips and areas of decoration missing, under UV light the surface is of a fairly uniform milky colour with just a few spots and specks showing up darker, craqueleur to the paint.
19TH CENTURY ENGLISH NAIVE SCHOOL "Old Matilda, a famous hunter, aged 28 years, the property of Mr.Daniel, Jaques. Leigh, de, la, Mere. Farm Wilts 1831", an unsaddled hunter with huntsman and hounds in background, oil on canvas, unsigned, titled in full along base, 56 cm x 66 cm CONDITION REPORTS Overall with wear, scuffs, craqueleur and dirt, various creases, undulations and mis-shaping to the canvas, some deterioration to the surface, surface overall has a very dull finish, some flakes missing to the paint, colours and picture appear to have leached through to back of canvas where the canvas is noticeably darker to the lower half, to the top and reverse, under UV light the picture shows up a fairly uniform milky colour with just a few specks showing up darker.
LUCIEN CHENU (1913-) "Eglise au bord de Marail la Vendee", oil on canvas, signed bottom left, bears "Marlborough Antiques" label verso, 50 cm x 61 cm (ARR) CONDITION REPORTS Overall with light general wear and a few specks of dirt, but overall the picture appears to be in good condition, frame has some wear, scuffs and scratches and some cracks and chips.
JOHN EMMS (1843-1912) "The Flute Practice", oil on canvas, signed bottom left, 25 cm x 29.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Overall with some wear and scuffs, some slight undulations to canvas particularly to the lower edge of picture, craqueleur to paint, frame has quite a lot of cracks and splits and some chips, there are some white specks and scuffs to the signature, under UV light the picture is of a quite uniform milky colour with just some darker areas showing to the back of the boy's head suggesting some touch-up paint in this area.
19TH CENTURY CONTINENTAL SCHOOL "Study of scantily clad lady with child", oil on board, unsigned, 48 cm diameter CONDITION REPORTS Overall with wear, scuffs and dirt, various chips to frame, under UV light appears to have had some re-painting and re-varnishing with several areas showing up dark throughout, frame with various chips and scuffs.
M. HUGHES "Escaping the Wolves", three figures on a horse-drawn sledge in snow, oil on board, signed bottom right, 32 cm x 55.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Some undulations and warping to the surface, some craqueleur to the paint, some scuffs and scratches including some areas where paint is scratched away including to sky, under UV light the picture shows up a uniform milky colour with the exception of a few tiny specks and a small darker area approx 2 cm x 1 cm to the right-hand edge of the picture near the frame.
17TH CENTURY CONTINENTAL SCHOOL "Andromeda chained to wall", oil on canvas, unsigned, bears old Christie's label verso, 72 cm x 57 cm CONDITION REPORTS Frame in very poor and deteriorated condition, painting appears to have been re-lined, under UV light the majority of the painting has fairly milky finish but there are quite a lot of areas throughout that show up darker indicating restoration throughout.
19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Gentleman in black coat with white stock" and "Lady in mop cap", portrait studies, half length, a pair, oil on canvas, 76 cm x 63 cm CONDITION REPORTS Both frames with various cracks, splits and losses, and some areas of repair and re-painting. Painting of gentleman has quite a milky appearance under UV light, with the hair and outline of his coat showing up lighter, plus a dark area to the right of the bridge of his nose, craqueleur to surface of paint and some slight indentations and undulations to canvas. Both paintings appear to have been re-lined. Painting of the lady under UV light appears quite patchy particularly to the background where there appears to have been some restoration and repairs, also quite a lot of dark areas to her clothing, and repaired split, face appears in reasonable order with no obvious signs of restoration under UV light, frame does have some areas of moulding missing.
18TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Gentleman in wig with white stock and purple satin cloak", oil on canvas, unsigned, 76 cm x 63.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Painting has craqueleur throughout and some light general wear and scuffs, frame has some general wear and some small chips and areas of flaking, painting appears to have been re-lined, under UV light the picture is generally a fairly milky colour overall but does show up several patches of restoration and touch-up paint including to his face, clothing and a few areas to the background particularly around the edges. There is no provenance available for this lot. It has been consigned by a local private vendor.
18TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL IN THE MANNER OF JOSEPH HIGHMORE "Gentleman with white stock and brown coat", oil on canvas, unsigned, 70.5 cm x 67 cm CONDITION REPORTS Picture overall with some wear and scuffs and some scratches and losses to the paint. Craquelure throughout. Under UV light picture overall appears a fairly uniform milky colour with some pale patches where the scratches are and a few darker areas of touch up paint / restoration, including near one of his eyebrows, a few small areas to his hair, a few areas to the clothing. Picture appears to have been re-varnished. Frame has various scuffs and chips and some losses to the gilding and some filler and repairs.
A pair of Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre trumpet vases, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones "Butterfly Woman", printed and painted in colours and gilt on a black lustre ground, bears printed and painted marks, 24 cm high (Literature: Una des Fontaines, Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre, Sotheby Park Bernet, Page 146 Plate 30 for a comparable vase) CONDITION REPORTS Overall some general wear and scuffs, both vases have a slightly dull sound when tapped, a few small scratches, some wear to gilding particularly to the foot rim of one of the vases, under UV light the exterior of the vases shows up very dark and the interior of the vases shows up very pale, although both vases have a very dull sound when tapped we have not been able to see any evidence of cracks or breaks, a few firing blemishes, to include small blob/rough area to foot rim.
A modern Moorcroft ginger jar with tube lined floral decoration, bearing initials to base "WM" and "JH", copyright date 1997, and date cypher for 1999, 15 cm high, together with an Old Tuptonware Moorcroft style vase with crimped rim and tube lined floral decoration, 19.5 cm high (both boxed) (2) CONDITION REPORTS Both pieces appear to be of first qualilty. Old Tuptonware vase has some light general wear,but appears to be sound, cardboard box has some scuffs and tears. Ginger jar has some light general wear and some sellotape deposits where the lid was sellotaped in place, has small frit to rim of lid and small chip to rim of lid, box has some wear and scuffs.
A modern Moorcroft two handled vase decorated in the "Cetona" pattern by Beverley Wilkes, limited edition No'd 147/200, signed to base and bearing initials "WM", bears copyright date 2000 and date cypher for 2001, 26 cm high CONDITION REPORTS This appears to be of first quality. Overall with some light general wear, but appears to be sound, cardboard box has some wear and scuffs, some of the blue paper covering is lifting at the joins and has a few tears to underside.
A Moorcroft squat baluster shaped table lamp decorated in the "Koi Carp" pattern, bearing initials "MH" to base and date cypher for 1991, 20 cm high (excluding light fitting) CONDITION REPORTS Overall with some general wear and scuffs, some crazing to glaze, firing crack to underside and large surface/glazing cracks to underside also, and some long glazing cracks to neck.
A 19th Century Wedgwood blue jasper dip circular wall plaque decorated with classical figures within a foliate border, 15 cm diameter CONDITION REPORTS Currently sealed within its frame so unable to inspect edges and back, paper passe partout to the back has quite a lot of tears and holes, visible part of the front of the Wedgwood plaque appears to have some light general wear and dirt but otherwise appears OK.
A Beswick figure of a Bedouin Arab warrior on horseback, No'd. 2275 to base, 26.5 cm long, raised on an oak plinth stand CONDITION REPORTS Metal sword is quite bent and mis-shapen, figure generally has wear, dirt and dust, oval wooden base appears to be slightly bigger than the base of the figure so may be associated, under UV light the figure appears quite blotchy although this could be due to the amount of surface dirt, the tail appears to have been broken off and there is restoration to the tail where it meets the body of the horse, one of the ears has quite a shiny patch and a line which shows up under UV light so this has possibly also been re-glued and repaired, there is over-painting to the tail and it is not possible to see the extent of the filler/repair beneath.
A fine and rare Doulton glazed pottery cased clock, modelled by George Tinworth and decorated by Hannah Barlow depicting a scallop shell capped nautilus shell holding the clock movement with Arabic numerals, surrounded by cherubs riding seahorses on a moulded socle base, bearing Doulton Lambeth stamp and date 1878, 27.5 cm wide x 22 cm high, together with two letters from Desmond Eyles of Doulton & Co. Limited, dated 13th July 1970 confirming the above, and another from Miss F Lovering of Doulton & Co. Limited, dated 24th July 1970 - believed by Desmond Eyles to be a unique piece CONDITION REPORTS Large firing cracks to underside of base, under UV light there is evidence of some repairs including one cherub having broken off and wing broken off, one cherub's wing is missing, some chips including to seashells to top, firing crack and/or later crack visible to the integral base, the whole appearance of the stoneware and glaze has quite a purplish colour under UV light, further crack to the edge of the integral base, dial is quite browned and stained.
An 18th Century Italian Maiolica charger decorated with kneeling Saint, the light of the Lord shining down upon him, 39.5 cm diameter CONDITION REPORTS Overall with wear and scuffs, a few scratches, quite a lot of firing blemishes and firing faults and areas which are lacking glaze, plus a scrape/scratch where glaze has been chipped away approx. 2.5 cm x 0.5 cm to the top of the charger, and a few areas of glaze missing around edges, but otherwise appears sound., under UV light shows up a fairly uniform colour with the exception of the areas of glaze missing and areas of dirt, there is a vertical ridge to the top of the charger which appears to have been produced during potting.
A rare late 18th Century Delft clock face, cream ground with Arabic numerals in black, 21.5 cm diameter CONDITION REPORTS Some small frits and chips around edges. Two holes drilled to face, plus the central hole. Some chips around the drilled holes. There is a 'patchwork' effect of ridges/indentations beneath the glaze which resemble large crazing lines, these appear to both sides of the clock face. Under UV light the surface appears a uniform pale milky purple with small flecks.
A 19th Century Meissen part tea set, royal blue ground with gilt lining and panels of floral sprays with insects, comprising bullet shaped teapot. slop bowl, cream jug and four cups and saucers height of teapot 14 cm CONDITION REPORTS Jug and teapot are of a quite significantly paler blue ground than the bowl and cups and saucers, teapot has finial to lid missing and overall some wear and scuffs, jug has some general wear but overall appears sound, bowl has some light general wear but appears to be sound, cups have some light general wear and a few scuffs but appear to be sound, saucers have some wear, scuffs and some scratches, one saucer is broken and glued and has some chips and a piece missing, another saucer has chips to rim and there are some slight variations to colour and shape of saucers, slop bowl approx.19.5 cm diameter.
A pair of circa 1900 Chinese Canton famille-rose vases of onion form with flared rims, decorated with panels of figures in interiors and birds and butterflies amongst blossoming foliage, raised on a plain circular foot, 16.9 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Both have some light general wear and scuffs, some rubbing to the decoration and a few small areas of flaking and scratches to decoration, one of the panels has some rubbing to the centre and is now quite matt in appearance, but overall appear in reasonably good condition.
A Perthshire Paperweights glass paperweight with central thistle decoration and medallion, inscribed verso "97 IPS", 8 cm diameter CONDITION REPORTS Has some light general wear, arc shaped blemish to the top which appears to be during manufacture, but otherwise appears to be in good condition.
A Lalique "Barr" decanter and four glasses, decanter 25.5 cm high (including stopper) CONDITION REPORTS Some light general wear. Small chip to rim of one glass. Decanter stopper has "16" etched to underside. Decanter has some bubbles and blemishes to neck, and a few small blemishes / bubbles to body. All glasses have a slightly dull sound when tapped. Height of glasses approx 15.8 cm/ 15.9 cm. (and vary slghtly from each other)
A cut glass bowl ceiling light in the manner of Waterford, diameter of bowl 41 cm CONDITION REPORTS Generally with quite a few chips and bruises throughout, however there do not appear to be any major breaks, height approx. 39 cm excluding the metal loop hanging attachment and excluding finials, but including the baluster column.
AFTER BERYL COOK (1923-2008) "Bridge Party", colour print, limited edition No'd 223/650, numbered bottom left, signed in pencil bottom right, 35.5 cm x 47 cm (ARR) CONDITION REPORTS Some light general wear but overall appears to be in good condition, frame has a few scuffs and scratches and chips to corners.
AFTER BARBARA HEPWORTH (1903-1975) "Moon landscape", chromolithograph, limited edition No'd. 80/90, No'd bottom left, signed in pencil bottom right, 57 cm x 77 cm (ARR) CONDITION REPORTS Overall with some light general wear, low edge to the print is a "raw" edge, frame with a few scuffs, chips and knocks, but generally picture and frame appear in reasonably good condition, print has some feint marks/creases around the border/edge and a couple of small specks/marks to the surface.
A platinum set three stone diamond ring, the central oval cut diamond approx 1.25 carats, flanked by two smaller stones, each approx 0.15 carats, size P CONDITION REPORTS Has some light general wear and scuffs. The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George Companions (CMG) breast badge, silver gilt and enamel, in original Garrard & Co. Limited London fitted case CONDITION REPORTS Ribbon has wear, creasing, stains and has been over-sewn and has some ribbon/ties sewn to it. Medal itself has some tarnish and light wear, plus some wear and knocks to loop/ring to top but generally appears to be in good order. Black case inscribed "C.M.G." has some wear and scuffs. Height of medal approx 6.5cm including the fixed loop but excluding the free-moving loop. Total weight including loops is 29.6g approx.
A Rolex Oyster Perpetual wristwatch in presentation box with various certificates, etc CONDITION REPORTS Some light general wear but overall appears to be in good condition, please note we can make no guarantee as to whether or not in working order. Yellow paper cash receipt included with this Lot is No'd 21917 and 21932, appears to have been paid in instalments, and dated 01.08.08 and 4.08.08 are from Deacon & Son (Swindon) Ltd. Serial no. on the watch matches the one on the certificate.
AFTER BERYLCOOK (1923-2008) "Three Piece Band", colour print, signed in pencil bottom right, bears studio blind stamp bottom left, 31 cm x 40 cm (ARR) CONDITION REPORTS Some light general wear and a few specks of dirt, a few thunderflies under the glass, but overall condition appears to be good.
Fourteen 18th Century French miniature ivories set into silver mounted buttons, with foil backs, featuring hunting scenes, fishing scenes, maidens with animals, etc, 3.75 cm diameter CONDITION REPORTS All buttons with tarnishing to the silver, and all buttons with some very faint light scratches. Button with the Man seated with dog; Leafy swag border is broken on riight hand side, and a split to the lower. Woman seated with dog, split / crack to rear of lady, and split behind dog. Running fom tail downwards. Split to the floral swag border. Woman seated with dog; Small split to the leaf border at lower. Woman with cherub; Part of tree is detached and loose, with another smaller piece broken off. Man fishing; where the land meets the border is split. Man with dogs and gun; Small part of tree broken off and is loose. Woman with accordian(?); some white dust in button. All with small signs of wear and tear. Glass fronts to buttons appear OK. The oval frames on which the buttons are mounted are not glazed.
A Victorian carved ivory handled seal as a hand holding a seal with carved hardstone facia, 8.2 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Some light general wear and scuffs, some yellowing to the ivory, a few black marks and dirt including a small black mark/blemish to the finial area (which forms the cuff/sleeve to the hand), some tarnish to the metal mounts and some small knocks and dents to metal mounts.
AFTER FERNAND LEGER (1881-1955) "Composition with figures", chromolithograph, unsigned, 37 cm x 55 cm, together with another by the same hand "Composition in yellow, blue, green and orange stripes", colour print, unsigned, 85 cm x 50 cm (2) (ARR) CONDITION REPORTS Small print has some light general wear, some slight yellowing to paper, vertical crease down the centre of the paper. Large print has some general wear and dirt, some yellowing to the paper, some bugs under the glass, small scuff/crease lower left section of the picture.
A Persian carpet, the centrefield with all-over stylised floral and foliate decoration in terracotta, peach, cream and blue on a dark blue ground, within similarly decorated borders, 400 cm x 305 cm CONDITION REPORTS Overall with light general wear and dirt, some slight fading to some areas but overall has a good amount of pile and appears to be in reasonably good condition.
