François Gall (French, 1912-1987), "Picnic in the Woods", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 19 1/2 in. x 23 1/2 in., framed. Provenance: Ross L. Peacock Madison Avenue Gallery, New York, 1986. Note: Hungarian-born Francois Gall studied at both the Accademia de Belle Arti in Rome and the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris before the commencement of World War II, which he spent in Hungary and Austria. Returning to Paris and becoming a naturalized citizen in 1949, Gall married and spent the remainder of his life in France. He greatly admired the work of the Impressionist painters, particularly Edgar Degas, and their influence is apparent in the painting offered here with its light palette, plein-air scenery, and careful brushwork. The woman seated on a picnic blanket appears lost in a reverie, and the dappled light is portrayed particularly well on her dress and the surrounding grass.
