* American Revolution. A group of six autograph letters relating to trade, social and political issues in North Carolina and America, 1773 to 1783, three letters from Thomas Ogden and one each from his brothers Titus and Isaac, all written to their parents James and Mary in Manchester, England, the content of the letters concerning trading and personal news, the first letter dated 31st January 1773 from both Thomas and Titus but in Thomas’s hand, in part, ‘I’m now here about 3 weeks and must confess I never in the whole course of my life met with such genteel treatment. I am one of the family [?] I eat, spend my evenings and sleep with the best in ye house which I assure you is very respectable in this place she is a widow lady and has a ship, a brigg, and a sloop in her employment besides keeping a pretty good store, my brother boards at a very good house in company with several [?] and members of the assembly and I assure you he is considered in a respectable light. We have made acquaintance with some of the best people in town and I daresay we shall find our advantage in it. Titus comes and is as free in our house as in his own. Drinks tea with us every afternoon and Mrs Smith and her daughter are fond of his company. Board here is not so cheap as we expected ... I have already become the widow’s privy counsellor in her mercantile affairs and I am not in want of money ...’, continuing with details of local trade and some specific information, the second letter from Thomas recommending Thomas Emery who carries the letter and saying he is of good character to do business with, the third letter from Titus (20th January 1774), telling of his general good fortune and how he and Mr Emery get on so well, ‘In summer season there is no business done here, and the barrelled pork being pretty low now he told me if I should like he would purchase a cargo and I should take the consignment to the West Indies towards May next which I readily accepted at the same time I told him ... we have since jointly purchased a negro sold here at [?] for 5 worth £50 which we intend bartering for pork and don’t fear turning to good advantage ...’, the fourth letter making reference to the Boston Tea Party, ‘Your wise words (?) at home have struck a sort of terror amongst our Northwood’s neighbours it is in some measure what they deserved. I believe as far as I am capable of judging all the Southwood provinces blame them much for drowning the tea. She say they ought to have not suffered it to be landed til it became the King’s property then in course she would not have sent any more when they found that they ... people here seem much divided, the great part of ye Americans are for supporting the Bostonians but the English, Scotch & Irish talk much against it saying they shall be ready at any time to support the liberty of the subjects and ye Bostonians but not til ye have paid for the tea and made proper reparation ... as far as I can learn & see of the Bostonians I think them a restless fanatical sort of people and we shall never be at rest til their formal government is attained. I believe most people here think a King’s government the best and surest both for King and subjects. It is really ridiculous for a community to choose both their own representation and the King’s counsel ...’, the fith letter from Thomas (1st August 1776), relating that the letter will be conveyed by means of his friend John Mackay on his way to Bordeux in France, ‘This is one of the roundabout ways people are obliged to take who want to get home to England from America by reason of the late act of parliament which totally excludes us from every port in the British Dominions as well as condemning all battles from America found on the high seas by any of his Majesty’s ships of war. The present troubles have been carried out with such rancour on both sides that I should get no opportunity of writing you since last October ... since all importation from Great Britain has been stopped Titus and myself have been almost wholly employed in buying and selling upon the spot and as we had a good assortment when trade was stopped we cleared a good deal upon the advance. Everything is extremely dear & scarce with us and is daily becoming more and more so ...’, the letters all somewhat fragile and browned with tears and occ. loss of text, a total of twelve pages with integral address leaves, and panels, mostly folio, together with an earlier autograph letter from Thomas Savage, Galata [Istanbul], 19 April 1704, to Lockwood, Chadwicke & Pheasant, concerning trading of goods and accounts, 2 pp., docketed, folio, plus ten other documents including five 17th-century receipts and similar, plus a small quantity of late 19th and 20th centuary genealogical information on the Ogden family, the whole loosely contained in a contemp. musty vellum ledger, rubbed and soiled, folio. Titus and Thomas Ogden were merchants in North Carolina. Titus later became a Paymaster to the Troops and of Indian annuities, and in 1791 he was one of the signatories of the Holston Treaty with the Cherokee. (a folder)
