Dante Le Terze Rime Aldus 1502 first Aldine edition first issue the first 8vo format edition of Dante Consul Joseph Smith`s copy initial spaces with guide letters blank l2 occasional early ink marginalia (slightly faded) and sectional marking front free endpaper with 1981 Tighe family biro presentation inscription title with small neat ink signature and 2 very small wormholes at head a few stains to title and a2 a2 lower margin repaired not affecting text occasional light soiling engraved bookplate of Joseph Smith 18th century vellum over boards spine with blind-stamped compartments and a dark green gilt leather label lightly soiled [Ahmanson-Murphy 59 (59.5); Renouard 34:5; Adams D83] 8vo Venice Aldus Manutius 1502. ***A very good copy of the first small format edition of Dante with an impeccable provenance. The first issue is without the Aldine anchor device with the uncorrected `Alaghieri` on verso of sub-title and quires a-c in 1st setting. Changes were made to the edition during printing and several quires were re-set and the anchor device added. The edition was carefully worked on by Bembo at the house of Ricano at a time when the poet Ercole Strozzi was also in residence. Bembo`s editing makes this a key work in the attempt to reform and sophisticate the Italian language. Provenance: Joseph Smith British Consul at Venice (1744-1760). He was patron of Canaletto and a passionate collector of art and books and manuscripts. He bankrolled the press of Giovanni Battista Pasquali from where he issued lavishly-produced books in extremely limited editions. These included a Catalogue Librorum Rarissimorum which was a partial catalogue of the rarities in his own library; The Tighe family of Inistioge Co Kilkenny and Rossanagh Co. Wicklow including Mary Tighe the poet and acquaintance of Keats and by descent thereafter. While on the Grand Tour the Tighes had acquired the present volume from the British Consul at Rome who had earlier bought it in Venice.
