Merlen, comprising: two pounds, obverse (cf. S.3799; Murdoch 415); two pounds, reverse (cf. S.3799; Murdoch 415); sovereign, obverse (cf. S.3801; Murdoch 417; Bentley 390); sovereign, reverse (cf. S.3801; Murdoch 417; Bentley 953); crown, obverse (cf. S.3806; L&S.22; Lingford 519); crown, reverse (cf. S.3806; L&S.23; Lingford 520), some light marks and hairlines, generally nearly extremely fine, in contemporary fitted, velvet-lined leather case, extremely rare and possibly unique as a set (6) *ex Raglan collection Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan (1788-1855), was one of the most celebrated soldiers of the early 19th century. Somerset served first as aide-de-camp and then military secretary to Sir Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, through the later stages of the Napoleonic Wars. He distinguished himself at numerous battles culminating with Waterloo in 1815 where he was to lose an arm in the fighting. Later, in 1854, as 1st Baron Raglan, he was given command of British forces sent to the Crimea where he died after a failed assault on Sevastopol, following initial victories at Alma and Inkerman and the debacle at Balaclava. In 1814 Somerset married Emily Harriet Wellesley-Pole, Wellington`s favourite niece and daughter of William Wellesley-Pole, Master of the Mint, 1814-23. Wellesley-Pole was to help initiate and execute the great reform of the coinage from 1816 onwards. Under his leadership unprecedented improvements were made in the efficiency of the Mint and the quality of the coinage. Along with talented engravers such as Benedetto Pistrucci and William Wyon, engineers like John Barton were employed to improve the machinery of the Mint. Barton`s mastery of the latest technologies of the day would lead to the production of the rare and beautiful uniface patterns of 1825 in the metal named after him.
George V, proof `Wreath` crown, 1932, bare head l., rev. large crown within wreath (S.4036; ESC.372; L&S.41, giving the former ESC rarity estimate of R6, as number 372A), FDC, a superb coin showing the deep strike and reflective fields of a proof, mostly brilliant with delicate toning, a delightful specimen in every way *ex Sotheby, 13 February 1986, lot 245 ex Baldwins Auction 31, lot 296 The scant mintages of the Wreath crown series are suggestive of the hard times out of which they were born, the first date being 1927, minted immediately on the heels of the great labour strike of 1926. This short-lived series in fact had little purpose in its day, and pieces became popular as Christmas stocking gifts among the well-to-do, with little surviving evidence that these crowns were ever commercially viable. This type has never been fully appreciated for its scarcity in better states of preservation, possibly because of earlier catalogue comments that most examples show little if any wear. True that may be, but the vast majority of surviving crowns of this type are far from perfect and even the nicer coins tend to show some slight rubbing on high points. Due to die-transfer, the king`s cheek appears to have light abrasions, but these are deceptive: they are not marks caused post striking but are as made. The typical Wreath crown exhibits sharp details, a dull silvery lustre, and surfaces that are slightly grainy and more satiny than reflective. Collectors, however, have long argued over certain specimens, whether they were made as special proofs or just particularly well struck on slightly polished flans, and indeed some of the 1927 proofs support the argument. However, proofs such as this coin do exhibit special fields and slightly more crispness in the strike overall than is seen even on the best-struck normal pieces, and the rims and edge tend to confirm their status. A modern rarity as a Proof of Record.
George V, proof crown, 1935, raised error edge, bare head l., rev. stylized St. George and the dragon in Art-Deco fashion, struck in .925-fine silver (S.4050; L&S.48; ESC.380 [R5] with edge inscription out of order, in error), practically mint state, boldly struck with reflective surfaces and somewhat frosted motifs, pleasing light pinkish gold toning, seldom offered for sale these days This is a most curious and very rare error, particularly so as it occurs on a proof issue, not on commercial strikes for which the mint used numerous dies. The error is dramatic, too; the large, raised letters of the edge inscription read out of order as follows: DECUS ANNO REGNI ET TUTAMEN XXI with a stop before and after XXI. Clearly the steel edge fillet, or band, was in sections, here with ANNO REGNI on one band incorrectly inserted when the legend was assembled for the edge. Linecar & Stone designated it as R7 back in 1968, but a few more examples have turned up since then, most of them now long held in older collections.

Eric Ravilious (1903-1942), Aldeburgh Bathing Machines, signed and dated Aug 1938 lower left, watercolour, 41 x 52cm. In original sycamore frame. Titled on Arts Council of Great Britain label verso. Arthur Tooth & Sons exhibition label verso. We are very grateful to James Russell, lecturer and author on Ravilious for the Mainstone Press, for the following write up on this painting. Until this year only the owner of `Aldeburgh Bathing Machines` knew of its existence. This scintillating watercolour was bought from the artist`s exhibition at Tooth`s in May 1939 and since then the title has been attributed to a different painting, also of bathing huts. As far as anyone other than the owner knew, the picture featured here had never existed, so that to Ravilious`s descendants, collectors and fans `Aldeburgh Bathing Machines` is not a lost painting returned but a new and exciting discovery. Eric Ravilious was in the middle of a prolific period when he visited Aldeburgh late in August 1938. Galvanised by the prospect of the Tooth`s exhibition he had travelled around the country, seeking out inspiring subjects. His letters are generally a good source of information about his activities, yet we know almost nothing about his visit to Aldeburgh; he left no clue as to why he was so intrigued by bathing machines. There were, however, similar devices on the beach at Eastbourne when he was a boy. Ravilious was born in London but at the age of eight moved to the Sussex seaside town, where his father ran an antiques shop. A scholarship took him to the Royal College of Art in 1922 and from there, his career as a designer and artist blossomed alongside that of his friend and fellow student, Edward Bawden. Ravilious retained a lifelong fascination for unusual and old-fashioned objects, particularly wheeled vehicles. He also liked to work in series, so we should not be surprised that he painted three watercolours of these delightful blue-and-white-striped bathing machines. In this case, the composition is centred on the parking sign and its shadow, around which the other objects (and the attendant) are carefully arranged so that the eye keeps moving from one to the next as if around a dial. The objects themselves are intriguing even by Ravilious`s high standards of oddity: the chicken appears in another painting and must have had some purpose but we don`t yet know what it was. Having no doubt seen his friend John Piper`s illustrated essay on `Nautical Style` in Architectural Review a few months earlier, Ravilious may have included the fowl as an amusing addendum. However, the most striking feature of this beautiful painting is the quality of the light. Dawn was this artist`s preferred time for outdoor work and in many watercolours it is the radiant early morning light that seems his true subject. The striated iridescent sky would become a feature of Ravilious`s finest wartime paintings but this is peacetime, and the scene is set for a holiday. James Russell, July 2014. www.jamesrussellontheweb.blogspot.co.uk www.themainstonepress.com. We would also like to thank the White Lion Hotel at Aldeburgh for kindly allowing us to reproduce their photograph of the White Lion bathing machine on the beach at Aldeburgh. www.whitelion.co.uk
SUZUKI GS1000 (1980) Reg GPM 820V FRAME NO 700004 ENGINE NO 131057 The GS1000 was introduced to the Suzuki range in late 1977. The combination of air-assisted front forks, a stiff chassis and adjustable rear shocks made for an above-average ride around the tightest of twisties, despite a longish 59.3-inch wheelbase. Contemporary journalists praised the comfort, excellent power delivery, superb handling and its good brakes. Suzuki clearly had racing in mind when it designed the GS1000, which migrated to the track shortly after it was introduced. The new Superbike class and a young racer named Wes Cooley turned both Superbike racing and the GS1000 into major attractions. Wes popped wheelies, smoked tyres and flamboyantly won races aboard a GS tuned by the legendary "Pops" Yoshimura. This 1980 GS1000 which has had only 2 previous recorded keepers has received some various cosmetic and handling upgrades over its years and is described as in overall good condition and having only covered 15 miles in the past year. In good running order, it is suggested that a light amount of re-commissioning may be required. Supplied with old style V5C and mot certificate *(expires October 2014)
JAGUAR MKI 2.4 SALOON (1958) (property of a deceased estate) RNV 77 VIN 910602DN ENGINE NO BC57318 Launched in 1955 As Jaguar`s new compact saloon, which was later to become known as the Mk I after the Mk II`s arrival. The MK1 fitted well in the firm`s range between the Large MkVII saloon and the XK140 sports car. The marque was the first Jaguar model to use unitary construction of the chassis/body. The Mk1 was released with a new 2.4-liter version of the proven XK six cylinder engine. Demands for more power resulted, in 1957, with the introduction of a 3.4-litre version. Offering 190bhp and a top speed of 120mph ,it was found, however, that this performance exceeded the capability of the drum brakes. All-round disc brakes were announced as an option and quickly became the standard. The Mk1 was progressively updated throughout it`s life before a wholesale revision of the basic design saw it re-launched as the Mk2 in October 1959. RNV 77 is a 2.4 litre engined example with desirable Manual overdrive transmission. Dispatched to the original dealer, Henlys of London on the 17th April 1958. The property of a deceased estate , This MKI was declared registered in the UK in 1996. One must suppose that the car, whilst supplied to a UK dealership, was perhaps abroad for much of its life?, The registration documents show 4 keepers since 1996, the most recent purchasing the car from Charterhouse Auctions in July 2013. Described as a good example and in original and unmolested condition, believed to have been barn stored for several years prior to the present ownership the car is currently in good running order and retains road tax until 30 sept 2014 although there is no MOT certificate on file. We would recommend a full safety inspection before taking to the road. The body and paintwork appear to be in original condition, the interior is also very well preserved with softly patinated red leather, a clean head lining and walnut veneers. Subject to the usual inspections and a fresh MOT this nice example could be used every day as is or considered as a rolling light restoration. Offered with V5C, past MOT certificates, various bills of expenditure and Jaguar heritage dating certificate.
