HEYERDAHL THOR: (1914-2002) Norwegian Explorer, famous for his Kon-Tiki expedition of 1947 in which he sailed across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. A good vintage signed 11 x 14 photograph of the explorer seated in a formal half length profile pose. Photograph by Madame Yevonde of Knightsbridge and bearing her bold pencil signature to the lower photographer's mount and credit stamp to the verso. Signed by Heyerdahl with his name alone in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount. Signed photographs of Heyerdahl of this size and quality are scarce. ALCOCK JOHN: (1892-1919) English Pilot who, with Arthur Whitten Brown, completed the first successful non-stop transatlantic flight, June 1919. An early, vintage fountain pen ink signature ('John Alcock') on the verso of a correspondence card, dated Brooklands, 22nd December 1912 in his hand. Together with Maurice Ducrocq (1874- ) French Pioneer Aviator, granted Royal Aero Club aviators certificate number 23 in 1910. Ducrocq opened a flying school, his most famous pupil being his mechanic, John Alcock. GAGARIN YURI: (1934-1968) Russian Cosmonaut, Pilot of Vostok 1, becoming the first man to journey into space, 1961. A Czechoslovakian commemorative cover issued for the Vostok flight of 12th April 1961, featuring various designs and postage stamps, postmarked at Prague, signed by Gagarin in bold red ink to a clear area with his name alone. Addressed in an unidentified hand to an individual in New York. Together with Alexei Leonov (1934-2019) Russian Cosmonaut, the first human to conduct extravehicular activity (EVA), his spacewalk taking part during the Voskhod 2 mission in March 1965. A vintage signed colour 6 x 4 postcard featuring an artist’s impression of Leonov during an EVA, featuring a Russian postage stamp, postmarked 18th March 1965, signed by Leonov in green ink with his name alone to the image. NAPIER ROBERT: (1810-1890) 1st Baron Napier of Magdala. British Field Marshal with the Indian Army. A.L.S., Napier of Magdala, one page, 8vo, n.p., 22nd August n.y. (1870), to Colonel Thesiger. Napier asks his correspondent to prepare some orders from 1847 'regarding the necessity of severe measures to repress insubordination' which were given to three men. To the verso and integral leaf of Napier's letter appears Thesiger's reply in the form of an A.L.S., Fred Thesiger, two pages, 8vo, n.p., 24th August 1870, to Lord Napier, sending him a list of all of the general orders and circulars 'which have been issued on the subject alluded to' in accordance with his request and further commenting 'I have not sent the books as they are very bulky and are besides required for daily reference. Colonel Dillon will have them all in his office'. At the foot of Thesiger's letter appears a brief holograph note, unsigned, from Napier to Dillon asking that he makes copies of the relevant orders and circulars. British Imperial General who served in the Anglo-Zulu War, Commander in the defeat to the Zulus at the Battle of Isandlwana.
NATAL: An excellent selection of A.Ls.S., a few Ds.S. etc., by various Governors, Prime Ministers and other officials related to Natal comprising Henry McCallum (1852-1919, English Colonial Administrator, Governor of Natal 1901-07; A.L.S. on the printed stationery of Government House, Natal, to a gentleman concerning his desire to secure local contracts for supplies and stating, in part, 'I went into [Percy] Girourad's figures after he left and found they were not altogether sound. I took the whole Natal military traffic, calculated what it would cost over the East London Johannesburg (centre of gravity) route and compared it with the Durban Johannesburg rates. With goods at 2s. per ton per mile the Natal bill is somewhat the smaller. Mr [David] Hunter has gone to Pretoria with an offer to make a fresh start on very liberal terms wh. I hope will be acceptable to the C-in-C. There is an excellent Imperial feeling here wh. I shall take advantage of', May 1901 and a T.L.S. thanking his correspondents for their Address and expressions of loyalty and referring to Umkomaas, commenting 'I trust that the Marine Residence of the Governor at Durban will be sufficiently pushed forward between this and next winter to allow me the opportunity of making it a pied a terre for visits to those parts of the Colony comprised in the north and south coasts and in Zululand. [BOER WAR]: HELY-HUTCHINSON WALTER (1849-1913) Anglo-Irish Diplomat & Colonial Administrator, Governor of Natal 1893-1901 and Governor of Cape Colony 1901-10. An interesting A.L.S., Walter Hely-Hutchinson, four pages, 8vo, Natal, 8th November 1899, to Murray, on the printed stationery of Government House. Hely-Hutchinson thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'I have just repeated Royston's pigeon post message to you. Reuter says the Boers caught his messenger; and a telegram has just come in from Pretoria with practically the same list of wounded', further continuing 'Tugela Ferry reports hearing about 8 shots this morning in Umbulwana direction; firing then ceased. I wonder whether our four inch gun has got to work & silenced them? They seem very cheery at Ladysmith…..If old Joubert keeps hanging on to Ladysmith, things will come all right soon'. In a postscript Hely-Hutchinson writes 'Please say to your Corps how much I value their patriotic service: & that I intend to make the corps the subject of a special report to the G[overnor] G[eneral]'. SECOND BOER WAR: A small, interesting selection of manuscript items relating to the Second Boer War comprising an excellent original pen and ink sketch on an 8vo sheet of printed stationery from the Red Lion Hotel in Henley-on-Thames, the image depicting a Boer soldier standing in a full length pose wearing his uniform and with his face masked, a pistol and dagger positioned in his belt and holding a sword in one hand and a flag emblazoned with a skull and cross bones in the other. The words Masked Enemy appear at the base of the sketch along with the signature (initials only) of the unidentified artist and the date, 25th September (n.y.) in his hand. A note, also in his hand, appears at the head of the page, addressed to 'My dear Editor'; Frank Dadd (1851-1929) British Painter & Draughtsman whose subjects included various aspects of the Second Boer War. Brief war date A.L.S., Frank Dadd, one page, 8vo, Blackheath, 15th July 1901, to Frank Downing, sending his autograph in response to his correspondent's request; a partially printed D.S. by the Assistant Provost Marshal at Pretoria, one page, small oblong 8vo, Pretoria, 1st July 1901, being a Pass issued during the Second Boer War to a Miss Malan, authorising her to hand over a parcel to a Mr. Fischer, possibly a Prisoner of War; James Gage Hyde (1872- ) South African Farmer who had joined the Irish Fusiliers in action at the Battle of Nicholson's Nek on 30th October 1899 and was captured by the Boers and imprisoned at Pretoria alongside Winston S. Churchill. A war date manuscript D.S., J Gage Hyde, being a signed cheque, one page, slim oblong 8vo, Waterval Z.A.R., 30th March 1900 (just over one month after the Relief of Ladysmith). Completed entirely in Hyde's hand, the cheque is drawn on the Ladysmith branch of The Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd and is made payable to A. C. Evans for the sum of £5. [GOEBBELS JOSEPH]: (1897-1945) German Politician, Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany 1933-45. An unused 4to sheet of Goebbel's printed stationery, featuring the black printed heading Der Reichsminister fur Volksaufklarung und Propaganda beneath a blind embossed Nazi eagle and swastika, also with the printed address at Wilhelmplatz, Berlin. Some light creasing otherwise VGProvenance: Accompanied by a statement of origin signed by Richard O. Rex stating that he personally removed the stationery from the Reich Chancellery in Berlin in July 1945 after having been flown in to help establish a medical dispensary for use during The Potsdam Conference. Also signed by a Notary Public as a witness.
KESSELRING ALBERT: (1885-1960) German Luftwaffe Generalfeldmarschall of World War II. A series of nine original colour 10.5 x 8 lithographs by the artist Wilhelm Wessel, each showing different scenes within the town of Iserlohn, all signed in pencil by the artist and individually neatly mounted to 12 x 14.5 card. With a tenth lithograph of a more graphic design of Iserlohn. Contained in the original oblong folio presentation folder, with cloth covers, and with a loosely inserted printed introduction to the lithographs, in English. Part of the inside of the presentation folder is boldly signed and inscribed by Kesselring in dark fountain pen ink, 'Major Taylor, as a little prove of my gratitude for your sympathising humanity and for your ideal special treatment during my stay in hospital….in the months of Mary (sic) and June' Signed ('Kesselring', with his rank beneath) and dated Iserlohn, 21st June 1951. Also included is a loosely inserted oblong 8vo sheet bearing Kesselring's holograph notes, in German and English, in part, 'In the 2 World War 2 dignified enemies have been crossing their swords in the Italian country. This judgement looks for opposite understanding, which sees in a joining together of our people being its purpose.' WEISSENBOCK HANS: (1912- ) Austrian SS-Obersturmfuhrer of World War II, awarded the Totenkopfring ('Death's Head' ring) in 1944. An important and comprehensive collection of over seventy Ds.S., T.Ls.S., some printed ephemera etc., relating to the SS career of Weissenbock, including official certificates confirming his membership of the Association of National Socialist Teachers in June 1938, a letter appointing him as an educational leader in the police force in Vienna (July 1938), an instruction to attend a training course of the Racial Policy Administration (signed by Wilhelm Gutensohn, August 1938), his contract of employment, a series of letters and documents relating to his marriage (stating, in part, 'Since you have already married - without approval - your continuance as a member of the SS is dependent on your obtaining a subsequent approval of your marriage', February - April 1940), an autograph statement signed by Weissenbock (signed in his capacity as SS Troop Leader, SS number 298345, two pages, 4to, Tarnow, 16th April 1941, providing a resume of his education and career to that date and stating, in part, 'In 1934, I worked in the (then) illegal S.A. In 1936, I joined the ordinary SS. During the period of illegality…..I commanded an SS troop which I and just one friend formed…..On 10.9.1939 I was promoted to SS Untersturmfuhrer…..On 29.4.1940 I was transferred to the Armed SS and joined 3rd Sqn. of the 1st SS Cav.Regt. In it, I was, from 29.4.1940 to September 1940, deputy Gruppenfuhrer. From September to 28th October 1940, I was Gruppenfuhrer. During the whole period, I acted as adviser on education. On 28.10.1940, as a result of an order from the Reichsfuhrer SS, I was seconded for work at the National Political Training Institute…..'), a document promoting Weissenbock to be an SS Obersturmfuhrer from 20th April 1941, a declaration signed by Weissenbock confirming that he has been officially informed in detail of the law on treason and the dangers of espionage (countersigned by Rittmeister Horwarth von Bittenfeld, 1941), a signed declaration confirming the 'admixture of Jewish blood' he and his wife have and that he is aware of the prosecution and punishment to be expected if he makes a false declaration (uncompleted, 14th September 1941), a certificate of engagement for Weissenbock as a 'person engaged for special tasks within the meaning of section 31 of the Regulations on Secrecy' (September 1941), a certificate of receipt for various items of Weissenbock's uniform including his greatcoat, field boots and SS cap (July 1942), carbon typed copy of a letter requesting a tobacco ration card (August 1942), a letter forwarding Weissenbock's ribbon for the 'Winter campaign in the East' medal (September 1942), an autograph letter signed by Weissenbock providing his personal appraisal of party member Dr. Wittlinger (January 1944), a document providing instructions from the SS Reichsfuhrer on service dress and stating, in part, 'Pistols are to be worn on the right hand side by all members…..When members of the SS greet each other by shaking hands…..this will be done with the naked - not the gloved - hand' (July 1944), a typed letter signed by Karl Fahrenkamp, the SS physician who served as doctor to Himmler's mother, offering his congratulations to Weissenbock upon his award of the German Gold Cross and further remarking '….I note that you have apparently been the victim of intrigue within the administrative apparatus. I find this all the more deplorable, since I have been happy to note how well you have deserved of the German people, particularly as a leader and teacher of our young people. I should advise you to ascribe no excessive importance to this matter, in so far as one can really ask this of a loyal National Socialist. I can once more assure you that these kinds of accusations are hardly calculated to ruin a deserving party member and SS leader. In addition, I shall get personally in touch with the SS Reichsfuhrer on your behalf.' (August 1944), a further typed letter signed by the Director of the National Agricultural Institute to Weissenbock on the same matter, stating, in part, '….I can only suppose that the schemers are to be found in circles close to you. You mention, in this connection, a party member named Dr. Wittlinger, on whom you were obliged, at the behest of your area headquarters, to give a character report. I imagine that this intrigue can be traced back ultimately to Dr. Wittlinger. Let me assure you that, in this matter, you have my full backing.' (September 1944), a document relating to a 'petition for mercy' which the SS and Police Court in Berlin have under their consideration (December 1944) and many others. Also including a quantity of photocopies of other letters and documents relating to Weissenbock. Each of the original letters and documents are accompanied by complete English translations. A fascinating and unusual archive. Most of the letters and documents have file holes to the left edges and with some light overall age wear, generally VG, Qty.

EDWARD III]: (1312-1377) King of England and Lord of Ireland 1327-77. Manuscript document issued during the reign of King Edward III, one page, slim oblong 8vo, n.p. (Worthing?), Thursday on the Feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul, 14 Edward III (29th June 1340) in Latin. The document is a Quitclaim with Warranty whereby Thomas Bernard of Worthing 'gave granted & quitted claim for him & his heirs for ever' to Richard Rugwick of Heen 'All his right & Claim in one half Acre of Land….lying on the East side of the Town of Heen stretching from the West towards the East chiefly upon the….furlong between the Land of William…..the Tanner on the South and the Land which was Roger de Heen's on the North' Lacking the seal. Accompanied by an English transcript and some additional notes stating that the land referred to in the document was subsequently granted by one Taylor to Knight in a deed dated 1585 and that the land formed part of Heen Farm. Some light overall dust staining and age wear and with a few small, neat splits and minor areas of paper loss, and some slight traces of former mounting to the verso. G
JAMES II & VII: (1633-1701) King of England & Ireland and King of Scotland (as James VII) 1685-88. A.L.S., with his initial J, as Duke of York, two pages, 4to, Windsor, 9th August n.y., to the Countess of Lichfield. The Duke states that he has just received his niece's letter and adds that it was charitable of her 'to write so in favor of old Col: Legge as you have done', further explaining 'I immediately went and spoke to his Ma:, in his favor, and sent to Ld: Clarendon in whose gift it seems it is, who tho he had an engagement upon him, for an old servant of the family, will see what he can do to lett Jack Legge have it' and concluding by remarking that he is just about to leave for London and that he intends to return by Sunday. With integral address leaf in the Duke's hand and again signed by him with his initial. Bearing a small red wax seal and with some extensive brown tape repairs, not affecting the address panel or seal. Some light staining and age wear, G Charlotte Lee (1664-1718) Lady Charlotte Fitzroy, Countess of Lichfield, the illegitimate daughter of King Charles II with his mistress Barbara Villiers, 1st Duchess of Cleveland. The Duke most likely refers to Colonel John Legge (1645-1729) son of the royalist army officer William Legge (1608-1670).
PRINCE GEORGE: (1819-1904) Duke of Cambridge, grandson of King George III and cousin of Queen Victoria. Commander-in-Chief of the Forces 1856-95. A good vintage signed 13.5 x 9 photograph, the image showing the Duke, in later years, seated in a three quarter length pose with a cane and holding a cigar in one hand and his hat in the other. Photograph by T. H. Voigt of Homburg and bearing their imprint to the lower mount and verso. Signed ('George') by the Duke with his name alone in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount. GEORGE V & EDWARD VIII: GEORGE V (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-1936 & EDWARD VIII (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. D.S. by both King George V ('George R.I.', as King, at the head) and the future King Edward VIII ('Edward P', as Prince of Wales, at the foot), one page, folio, Court at Saint James's, 4th June 1928. The partially printed document is addressed to Leslie Cecil Blackmore Bowker and grants him the dignity of an Officer of the Civil Division of the Order of the British Empire. With a blind embossed seal to the upper left corner. The signatures are very slightly faded although perfectly legible. Neatly laid down and with some very light, minor staining and age wear to the edges and centre, otherwise about VG Sir Leslie Cecil Blackmore Bowker (1887-1965) British Barrister who served as Chief Clerk to the Law Officers of the Crown.
EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A good official T.L.S., Edward R I, as King, one page, folio, n.p., 2nd April 1936, to [the leaders of the Non-Conformist Churches], on black bordered mourning stationery featuring the Royal coat of arms at the head. The King states, in full, 'It gives me much pleasure to receive this Address from my Non-Conformist subjects and to know of their sympathy with Queen Mary and myself, of their affection for King George and their appreciation of his character. I greatly value your expressions of loyalty to myself and can assure you that I shall ever prize those civil and religious liberties which are the heritage of my people and the basis of our freedom. I thank you for your recognition of my efforts to promote feelings of sympathy and understanding among all sections of my people. The Free Churches of this country have always helped to evoke that spirit of Christian Comradeship which seeks to relieve distress in our own land and to promote peace throughout the world, and I pray that the Blessing of God may rest on your labours'. With blank integral leaf. A letter of good content to the leaders of the Protestant non-Anglican churches. CANNING GEORGE: (1770-1827) British Prime Minister April - August 1827. A.L.S., Geo. Canning, one page, 4to, 6th April 1815, to 'My dear Lord', marked 'Private'. Canning forwards an explanation (no longer present) received from Don Miguel 'of the cause & manner of despatching the last vessel to Rio de Janeiro' and continues to add 'He assured me in the most solemn manner verbally this morning that she carried nothing but the Madrid Intelligence of Buonaparte & not a single despatch on business from any department of Government'. In a postscript Canning further remarks 'D. Migl. mentioned this morning that so little was the Captain sure of his destination that he refused to take on board some packages......for Brazil'. With blank integral leaf. An intriguing letter. Some slight traces of former mounting to the verso and a light stain to the upper edge, not affecting the main body of text or the signature. About VG At the time of the present letter Canning was serving as British Ambassador to Portugal (1814-16) and Napoleon Bonaparte had, for the second occasion, become Emperor of the French (20th March - 22nd June 1815).
BRITISH PRIME MINISTERS: H. H. Asquith (1852-1928) British Prime Minister 1908-16. A.L.S., H. H. Asquith, on one side of a printed correspondence card, Bedford Square, London, 30th September 1924, to 'My dear Strachey'. Asquith states that he is sorry that other business will prevent him attending the Page lecture, remarking 'He was a good friend of mine & a model Ambassador'. An light ink received stamp only very lightly affects the salutation; Henry Campbell-Bannerman (1836-1908) British Prime Minister 1905-08. A.L.S., H. Campbell-Bannerman, one page, 8vo, n.p. (London?), 6th February n.y. (c.1882-84), to Mr. Eykyn, on the blind embossed stationery of the Admiralty. Campbell-Bannerman writes, in full, 'Sir Cooper Key tells me that there is no intention to invite Officers either in the Navy or Marines to volunteer for the present service'. With blank integral leaf (some light traces of former mounting to the verso). VG, 2 Asquith's correspondent is likely to have been Lytton Strachey (1880-1932) English Writer & Critic, a founding member of the Bloomsbury Group. Campbell-Bannerman's correspondent may have been Roger Eykyn (1830-1896) English Politician. Sir Astley Cooper Key (1821-1888) British Admiral, First Naval Lord 1879-85. Henry-Campbell-Bannerman served as Parliamentary and Financial Secretary to the Admiralty from 1882-84.
FREDERICK II: (1712-1786) King of Prussia 1740-86. Known as Frederick the Great and remembered for his military victories. L.S., Frederic, one page, folio, Berlin, 3rd February 1741, to a minister in Cologne, in French. The King congratulates his correspondent for their report on the state of general affairs and instructs him to investigate the prince-elector of Cologne and his claim on the Court of Munich. With blank integral leaf. Some light age wear and foxing to the edges, not significantly affecting the text or signature, G Clemens August of Bavaria (1700-1761) Archbishop-Elector of Cologne who personally crowned his brother, Charles VII (1697-1745, Prince-Elector of Bavaria 1726-45 & Holy Roman Emperor 1742-45), as Emperor at Frankfurt in 1742.
WILHELM II: (1859-1941) German Emperor & King of Prussia 1888-1918. L.S., Wilhelm R, one page, 4to, Kiel ('on board the motor yacht Hohenzollern'), 25th June 1910, to Eduard Arnhold, Privy Councillor of Commerce, in German. The Emperor writes, in full, 'With great satisfaction I have learned that you have already generously donated the sum of 250,000 Marks to the independent research institutes whose foundation I intend to propose on the occasion of the centenary of the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin. You have given me an extraordinary pleasure in doing so and have done a great service to the sciences in Germany. I gladly accept your kind donation as a shining testimony of your generosity, which I am well acquainted with and which is especially well-known to the arts. NITTI FRANCESCO SAVERIO: (1868-1953) Italian Economist, Prime Minister of Italy 1919-20 during which time he had to deal with great social unrest and dissatisfaction with the results of the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I. An excellent original pen and ink drawing signed by the German-Swiss artist Robert Kastor, the well-executed image, on a folio sheet of artist's paper, depicts Nitti in a head and shoulders pose. Signed by Nitti at the base and with a lengthy quotation in his hand, in Italian, 'Europe will not regain lost wealth and what's more the security of life as long as true peace is restored, after the false peace of the treaties. [GRANT ULYSSES S.]: (1822-1885) American President 1869-77, previously Commanding General of the United States Army 1864-69. Under Grant the Union Army defeated the Confederate military in the American Civil War 1861-65. PLUMB EDWARD LEE (1827-1912) American Diplomat & Railroad promoter, associated with Mexico. A.L.S., E L Plumb, three pages, 8vo, n.p., 23rd June n.y. (annotated in pencil in an unidentified hand 1872), to Major General P. H. Sheridan ('General'). Plumb commences 'I must express to you the intense satisfaction with which I have read your splendid telegram to Genl. Grant published today. “Macadamized road for perjury”!!' and continues 'You have coined a phrase which will ring all over the country a convincing argument. And you have dared to say what no one else has so said before, yet what is in everyone's mind', further praising another condemnation of the President by Sheridan and contemplating if there may be more to follow. A letter of interesting content and association. Sheridan served as a Union General during the American Civil War.
DINUZULU: (1868-1913) King of the Zulu Kingdom 1884-1913. Son of Cetshwayo. An extremely rare A.L.S., Dinuzulu, two pages, 8vo, Osuthu, 17th July 1906, to J. F. Clark R.M., in Zulu. The boldly penned letter is untranslated and features a lengthy postscript, making a reference to 2nd July 1906, and again signed by Dinuzulu with his initials. Together with a second, brief A.L.S., Dinuzulu, one page, 8vo, Osuthu, 18th July 1906, to C. J. Walls, in English. Dinuzulu states, in full, 'Please supply bearer 3 bottles whisky E.S.C.' Some light age wear, minor foxing, folds and creasing, G to about VG, 2 The present letters were written during the Bambatha Rebellion of 1906, after which Dinuzulu was accused of having given the orders to Bambatha kaMancinza to start the rebellion. The Zulu King was subsequently put on trial for treason and, although protesting his innocence, was found guilty and sentenced to four years imprisonment in March 1908.Provenance: The present letters were previously part of the Ray Rawlins collection of autograph letters and historical documents. The Illustrated London News of Saturday, 7th December 1907 described the Zulu chief Dinuzulu as 'a hopeless drunkard'.

DIETRICH MARLENE: (1901-1992) German-American Actress and Singer. An interesting A.L.S., with her initial M, two pages, 4to, n.p. (Paris), 8th November 1984, to Gene Lovelle. Dietrich writes, in full, 'Many thanks for your letter. Now, that my friend is President again I can breathe easier. Nothing new here, except that I miss laughing with you! No laughter here!!! Everybody nervous or angry! Not easy! I am glad you lead a quiet life, not in the turmoil of the life I lead here. France is in a bad way and therefore all people who I am in contact with are NEUVUS IN THE SEUVUCE!!! I just hope my daughter can come soon. I need her. All love, M.'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Dietrich. Some very light, extremely minor creasing, otherwise VG Dietrich's correspondent was Gene Lovelle, her dresser during the 1960s and 1970s and wife of the star's guitarist, Chic Lovelle. Dietrich refers to Ronald Reagan who had been re-elected as President of the United States of America on 6th November 1984, just two days before the present letter was written.
DENT VERNON: (1895-1963) American Film Comedian associated with The Three Stooges. An extremely rare vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Dent standing outdoors in a full length pose, in costume, precariously holding a large dog in his arms in a scene from one of his films. Signed in blue ink to a light area at the base of the image and dated 9th March 1922 in his hand. Signed photographs of Dent are extremely rare, not least as a result of his blindness which led to his retirement in the mid-1950s. LIVINGSTON JAY: (1915-2001) American Composer whose works included the popular Christmas song Silver Bells. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Livingston in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in black ink to a clear area of the image. Livingston has added two musical quotations to a clear area of the background, one from Silver Bells and the other from Mona Lisa. A couple of very light, extremely minor smudges to part of the signature and inscription. Together with John Frederick Coots (1897-1985) American Songwriter whose works include the popular Christmas song Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town. A.M.Q.S., J. BERLIOZ HECTOR: (1803-1869) French Composer. An unusual L.S., H. Berlioz, one page, 4to, Paris, 22nd January 1849, to a gentleman, on the printed stationery of the Comite de l'Association du Artistes in French. The letter states, in full, 'Wishing to come to the assistance of honourable unfortunate people, the three associations of artists, painters, sculptors, engravers, architects and illustrators, musicians and men of letters, each of them hosting a yearly ball in aid of their relief fund, met today to arrange a gala that will take place on the 3rd February in the Jardin d'Hiver; would you please accept the role of ball commissioner, and join your efforts with ours to make the event more successful'. David G Bell : 'The Superb' Entering Spithead, Isle of Wight, 1806, oil on canvas, 75 cm x 50 cm, signed, framed. CONDITION REPORT: Light nicotine staining to canvas. Varnish thinning in places and would benefit from a fresh coat. Typical light surface dirt. Very minor craquelure in some areas. Generally very good condition with no apparent repairs or alterations.
