A Victorian 1821 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer's sword, 93cm blade by Wilkinson, serial no 22097 for 1877, etched with scrolling foliage and crowned VR cyphers, regulation three-bar steel hilt, wire bound fishskin grip. Blade patinated. Purchased by Sir Bernard Edward Barnaby FitzPatrick (1848-1937), 2nd Baron Castletown. At Brazenose College, Oxford (1868) he studied law and modern history, and was an enthusiastic contributor to several violent town-and-gown confrontations, gaining an enduring reputation for being good with his fists. He was also a notable eccentric, at one time keeping a 14 foot long tame python in his rooms, until one afternoon it almost strangled his chambermaid, who was only saved by his early return. In 1870 he served as an ambulance worker for the Red Cross Society in the Franco-German War, attending wounded soldiers and working in a typhus hospital. Returning to London in 1871, FitzPatrick was subsequently commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Royal East Kent Yeomanry, in 1877. He later obtained a commission in the 2nd Life Guards, and saw service in the Egypt Campaign of 1881-82 with that regiment. During the Boer War, 1899-1902, he was Assistant Adjutant-General to Lord Roberts. FitzPatrick was also active politically and socially, being elected Unionist MP for Portarlington in 1880. During the troubled 1880's, despite a long-standing reputation as a good landlord, threats from Land League activists in Queen's County forced him to take an armed guard, though FitzPatrick always maintained that his safety during that period came about as a result of the fact that he was known to be a deadly shot, who would shoot first and apologise later. He succeeded to his father's seat in the House of Lords in 1883, where he was generally politically moderate, although he did make an advanced Nationalist speech in 1896 after a Royal Commission established that Ireland was being overtaxed by ú3 million a year. Fitzpatrick was a member of the Irish Reform Association, founded by Lord Dunraven in 1906, and whilst Chancellor of the Royal University of Ireland (1906-08) he helped formulate a scheme that led to the foundation of the National University of Ireland. A keen hunter, he displayed a natural aptitude with the rifle despite a youthful mishap when he shot one of his father's servants. As a teenager he was the whip to a pack of otter hounds, spent many hours hawking and fishing, and kept his own harriers. He hunted with his own pack of foxhounds, the Queen's County, and with other hunts throughout Ireland. His passion for travel and talent for shooting saw him traverse the globe in search of big game, exploits which he described in his autobiography, "Ego" (1923). He also travelled through Africa, Russia, Asia Minor and Persia. In Persia he spent some time with the Shah, who allowed him to hunt on his lands. These travels were described in a later publication "Here and There About the World" (1932). FitzPatrick, who was Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the 4th Battalion Leinster Regiment (Queen's County Militia) from 4th October 1899, was made a Knight of the Order of St Patrick in 1908 and died on 29th May 1937.
