TLS A 20.3 x 12.7cm one page, typed letter on headed ""Bateman`s Burwash, Sussex TLS A 20.3 x 12.7cm one page, typed letter on headed ""Bateman`s Burwash, Sussex"" paper, signed ""Rudyard Kipling"" at foot in ink and dated May 26, 1895. Kipling writes to William Dunlop in reply to his letter of the 25th of May, saying that ""the date on the bookplate merely gives the year when it was designed and has no reference to the volume itself. Nor does it, evidently, belong to any one that I know"". Mailing folds, ""Private"" stamped across the upper margin of the letter. Paperclip rust stain to upper left corner. A few pencil annotations to upper margin. Together with a 18 x 11cm holograph copy of the letter written to Rudyard Kipling from Dunlop, dated ""54 Cromwell Road, Redhill, Surrey, 25th May 1935"", blue-lined white paper. Dunlop enquiries about an edition of ""The Voyage to the Polo Way"" by William Carlton Dawe, containing a bookplate dated 1894 which might be Kipling`s. He adds that the bookplate bears an inscription which might be by Kipling`s late son. Glue residue across upper section of fold, paperclip rust stain to upper left corner. Lot also includes a four page, 18 x 11.5cm letter on light blue paper, dated ""The Glables, Tisbury, 27 October 1905"" and signed ""J.L. Kipling"" at foot. Written on the first page, blank integral leaf. Kipling writes ""Dear Sir, I have a rooted dislike of publicity of any kind and should much prefer not to appear in any way in your book, especially as I have no sort of connection with the county. I have however put down on your slip all that can be necessary to say"".
