A SET OF FOUR VICTORIAN SILVER COASTERS EDWARD FARRELL, LONDON 1840 (2) AND 1842 (2) With gadrooned borders, pierced foliate scroll bodies, the centres engraved with a trellis and C-scroll band and a crest 14cm (5 1/2i) diameter With wood basesThe arms associated with the engraved crest appear to belong to one of three families: (1) WELBY family of Welby, Lincolnshire, baronets. Specifically Sir William Earle WELBY (1768-1852) 2nd Baronet, eldest son of Sir William Earle WELBY (1734-1815) 1st Baronet by his first wife Penelope GWYNNE daughter of Sir John GWYNNE (1713-1777) 6th Baronet. The second BT was MP for Grantham 1807-20. The crest attached to the grant has an arm embowed with sword over flames, but examples of the crest appearing bookplates show a cubit arm;(2) The Irish family of O'BRIEN. In particular of Sir Edward O'BRIEN (1781-1856) 4th Baronet of Dromoland Castle in the Peerage of Ireland and married Charlotte SMITH. He was an attorney of Limerick and the son of Sir Lucius O'Brien, 3rd Baronet (1731-1795) and Anne French. In this case the arm usually appears embowed; (3) The DOUGLAS family of Tillwhilly co. Kincardine, Scotland. Here the crest has the arm replaced by a hand couped at the wrist. Location:Condition:The bolt is too long to measure in-house, some light long term dust stains to the ends and the first half metre has Sellotape stains.
Two mid to late 20th Century fur coats to include a light brown mink with mutton sleeves, approx 40" chest x 28" long. Location:RailCondition: No apparent stiffening, no strong smells or loss of fur to mink but there are stains to the interior neckline and later alteration to collar towards shoulders-see additional photos. There is flattening to the fur and wear to the brown coat with lining clean and stain free, with no strong smells.

British Commonwealth Omnibus sets collection in two binders, virtually all MNH including the 1935 Silver Jubilee series (less Egypt) - the only light hinge marks seen among many checked are on the Virgin Islands set; the 1948 Silver Wedding series has pristine MNH Hong Kong, North Borneo, Singapore among others checked; 1949 UPU series, etc, through to 1966 UNESCO series and beyond. Lacking the miniature sheets and the odd non-design-type, otherwise fairly comprehensive and high-quality.

Along with another album with mainly line-engraved check-letter collections, ascribed no value towards our estimate.

Unusual double strike on obverse, better than fine, toned £120-£150 --- Provenance: Bt ABC Coins August 2014 Obverse die 4 is found coupled to only two reverse die and is not linked to any of the other obverses.

Davidson Collection, Part II, DNW Auction 60, 9-10 December 2003, lot 406 [weight incorrectly stated]; DNW 65, 16 March 2005, lot 895 This variety was first published by Dakers in 1938 and this coin is mentioned in the text as being one of only two specimens, at the time residing in Dr. Davidson’s collection.

Good fine or better but numerous light scratches on reverse, scarce £200-£300 --- Provenance: J.N.G. Wallworth Collection, Glendining Auction, 17 December 1942, lot 8 (part); Dr J. Davidson Collection, Part I, DNW Auction 59, 7 October 2003, lot 858 This group is situated at a point in the coinage when the lis stops become smaller and the variant spelling icibvs is used.

About very fine, toned, rare £500-£700 --- Provenance: Bt Spink December 1986 The noticeable die flaw under the m of scotorvm developed while the die was being used with a Berwick reverse. Since Edinburgh coins are known with no flaw and a very marked flaw, as here, it would seem the die went from Edinburgh to Berwick and back.
David II (1329-1371), Second coinage, Class A, Groat, class A7/B mule, Edinburgh, mm. cross pattée, small young bust, tressure of seven arcs, nothing in spandrels, crosslet stops, nothing after scotorvm, rev. ornate a in villa, 3.96g/1h (SCBI 35, 376, same obv. die; B 16/15a, figs. 255/262B, same dies; S 5091). Light scratches on obverse, otherwise very fine but portrait weakly struck, extremely rare £240-£300 --- Provenance: R.C. Lockett Collection, Part I, Glendining Auction, 18-19 June 1957, lot 130 (part); CNG eAuction 318, January 2014 (1108) Like the previous lot, this obverse die was used at Aberdeen (quite extensively) before being returned to Edinburgh for use only during the Class B issue.

SCBI 35, 422-3 and B 41, fig. 302; S 5125). Two small edge chips, otherwise good very fine, toned, the variety rare £240-£300 --- Provenance: R. Macpherson Collection, DNW Auction 83, 30 September 2009, lot 4003 [from Spink January 1981] No line below the bust is a consistent feature of the later part of the Light coinage but, despite that, this coin belongs earlier in the series as shown by the letter punches.

James V (1513-1542), Second coinage, Groat, Holyrood Abbey mint, type IIIb (iii), bust right with mantle and corded chain, single-arched crown, nine jewels to band, strawberry-leaf decorations, small trefoil on inner circle beneath first o of scotorv, rev. shield with rounded base, cross-ends E, no contraction after r of edinbvrgi, trefoil stops both sides, 2.69g/12h (cf. SCBI 35, 935-6; SCBI 58, 77ff; SCBI 71, 375 and B 15, fig. 717, same dies; S 5378). Light diagonal scratch on obverse, about very fine and toned £300-£400 --- Provenance: Bt L. Bennett May 2007 The vendor has records of this obverse coupled with six reverse dies.

SCBI 35, 386; B 27, fig. 289, same dies; S 5099). Slightly irregular flan, a few light surface scratches, otherwise about very fine and toned £240-£300 --- Provenance: R. Macpherson Collection, DNW Auction 83, 30 September 2009, lot 3995 [from Baldwin September 1988]; DNW Auction 157, 21 February 2019, lot 459 The vendor points out that the first three obverse dies of what we call Class C all link with reverses that have a small d under v of vill, obviously harking back to the earlier class B coins. Later dies have details that more closely link with the coins of D1. Chronologically therefore, Stewart’s C2 should precede C1.

Hamilton December 1981 The dies on this coin do not combine with any others in the series

On a full flan, about very fine and very rare £800-£1,000 --- Provenance: From the Innerwick (East Lothian) Hoard 1979 (no. 65); bt D. Cavanagh June 1983 Although there is no documentary evidence for the weight reduction of the Scottish coinage, indirect evidence would suggest c. 1467, a few years after the English initiative. The sporadic mint records show 83 lbs of silver being struck June 1467-68, after almost no production during the previous couple of years. The initials by the neck are believed to stand for Thomas Tod and Alexander Levingstoun, who were appointed mintmasters probably in the early 1470s. The obverse die of the current specimen was used first at Edinburgh and later at Berwick.

JOHN RUSSELL (1819-1893) “Salmon catch on rocks at Loch side with fishing bag in background”, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 66.5 cm x 104.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Has some small areas of flaking to the paintwork. Some light scratching throughout. There are also some smaller areas of crazing and there are also some small areas of damage to the canvas - not especially obvious but it is starting to come through. Has been re-lined. The frame itself - there is gapping at the joins and there are also some splits throughout. There is a small loss to the left hand corner and some discolouration particularly to the corners. Otherwise general wear and tear conducive with age and use. See images for further detail.
A Rowland Ward painted plaster salmon cast on simple oak board mount, bearing ivorine labels "Priory Pool Bishop's Wood River Wye March 28th 1954 Weight 43½lbs" and "Rowland Ward Ltd London and Nairobi", 132 cm x 43 cm CONDITION REPORTS The salmon cast - whilst the piece is in over all sound condition, there are signs of light chipping to the extremities, particularly to the upper lip, dorsal fin and rear lower fin and tail fin. Mounting board has signs of paintwork, particularly to the lower edge and split along the grain (light) at the join - see images for further detail
A pair of gold mounted mother of pearl and cabouchon cut sapphire cufflinks together with a composite cased set of six mother of pearl and turquoise waistcoat buttons housed in a T. Martin & Co box CONDITION REPORTS The cufflinks - one stone seems different to the others, possible replacement - different colour & size and the setting seems a little different. The same link has dents to the gold backs on both pieces. The mother of pearl has some "lines" within it conducive to material. Otherwise general wear and tear conducive to age and use to include some light surface scratching and dirt etc. See images. The waistcoat buttons are made up of three pairs, some difference in colour of stones across all buttons, couple of the stones have small chips and one has a crack. Colours seem fairly unfaded. There is a small mark in the skyline, otherwise the majority of the dirt appears to be on the glass. There is a little bit of crinkling to the paper as if not stuck down directly on the board to the back. This has not been inspected out of the frame or glass. Small vertical crack above left upper hinge. Large U shaped crack to the rear of hood panel. Light crack to the solder on the left ring of the rear handle. Light crack to solder on right rear handle.
