James III (1460-1488), Light issue, 1482, Groat, Edinburgh, mm. cross fleury, tressure of seven arcs, small trefoils on cusps, crown with five spikes, legend ends scotorm, rev. three pellets in first and fourth quarters, mullet of five points in second and third, reads edenbeovrge, 2.26g/3h (Murray dies 4/i, SCBI 35, 762, same dies; SCBI 72, 845ff; B 23, fig. 605, same obv. die; S 5280A). Unusual double strike on obverse, better than fine, toned £120-£150 --- Provenance: Bt ABC Coins August 2014 Obverse die 4 is found coupled to only two reverse die and is not linked to any of the other obverses.
James II (1437-1460), First coinage, Third Fleur-de-lis issue, Groat, Edinburgh, mm. cross pattée, tressure of eight arcs, reads iacobvs and gra, legend ends scotorvm, no additional marks, rev. three pellets in first and fourth quarters, lis in second and third, nothing in centre of cross, colon stops, double annulet before and after nbv, small lis after rgh, 2.11g/9h (SCBI 35, –; SCBI 72 –; B –, fig. –; S 5225). Light scratching on reverse, better than fine, a variety of extreme rarity £200-£300 --- Provenance: Dr J. Davidson Collection, Part II, DNW Auction 60, 9-10 December 2003, lot 406 [weight incorrectly stated]; DNW 65, 16 March 2005, lot 895 This variety was first published by Dakers in 1938 and this coin is mentioned in the text as being one of only two specimens, at the time residing in Dr. Davidson’s collection.
James I (1406-1437), First Fleur-de-lis issue, Groat, Edinburgh, type III, mm. cross pattée, tressure of eight arcs, small lis on neck, saltires on shoulders, saltires to right of neck and crown, i on sceptre handle, reads icobvs and tracia, rev. three pellets with small central pellet in first and fourth quarters, lis and pellet in second, lis between pellet and saltire in third, nothing in centre, lis and saltire stops both sides, 2.18g/7h (SCBI 35, –; SCBI 72, 437-8 and B 18, fig. 450, same dies; S 5195). James III (1460-1488), Light issue, 1475, Groat, Edinburgh, mm. cross pattée, tall crown of three fleurs, tressure of ten arcs, trefoils on lower cusps, legend ends scotorvm, rev. mullet of six points in first and fourth quarters, three pellets in second and third, cross before vil, double saltire stops both sides, 2.42g/8h (SCBI 35, 757, SCBI 72, 837 and B recte 19, fig. 591, same dies; S 5274). About very fine, toned, rare £500-£700 --- Provenance: Bt Spink December 1986 The noticeable die flaw under the m of scotorvm developed while the die was being used with a Berwick reverse. Since Edinburgh coins are known with no flaw and a very marked flaw, as here, it would seem the die went from Edinburgh to Berwick and back.
David II (1329-1371), Second coinage, Class A, Groat, class A7/B mule, Edinburgh, mm. cross pattée, small young bust, tressure of seven arcs, nothing in spandrels, crosslet stops, nothing after scotorvm, rev. ornate a in villa, 3.96g/1h (SCBI 35, 376, same obv. die; B 16/15a, figs. 255/262B, same dies; S 5091). SCBI 35, 457; cf. B 4, fig. 310; S 5131). Light mark on face, nearly very fine, an early variety and rare £150-£200 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Provenance: Bt Spink March 1982

SCBI 35, 422-3 and B 41, fig. 302; S 5125). Two small edge chips, otherwise good very fine, toned, the variety rare £240-£300 --- Provenance: R. Macpherson Collection, DNW Auction 83, 30 September 2009, lot 4003 [from Spink January 1981] No line below the bust is a consistent feature of the later part of the Light coinage but, despite that, this coin belongs earlier in the series as shown by the letter punches.
James VI (1567-1625), Before Accession, Eighth coinage, Thistle Merk, 1604, stop after scotorvm, 6.64g/10h (SCBI 58, 1588, same rev. die; SCBI 35, –; cf. B fig. 943; S 5497). James V (1513-1542), Second coinage, Groat, Holyrood Abbey mint, type IIIb (iii), bust right with mantle and corded chain, single-arched crown, nine jewels to band, strawberry-leaf decorations, small trefoil on inner circle beneath first o of scotorv, rev. shield with rounded base, cross-ends E, no contraction after r of edinbvrgi, trefoil stops both sides, 2.69g/12h (cf. David II (1329-1371), Second coinage, Class C, Groat, class C2, Edinburgh, mm. cross pattée, third intermediate bust, tressure of six arcs, nothing in spandrels, double crosslet stops, including after cotorvm, small d under v of vill, plain a both sides, 4.13g/9h (cf. SCBI 35, 386; B 27, fig. 289, same dies; S 5099). Slightly irregular flan, a few light surface scratches, otherwise about very fine and toned £240-£300 --- Provenance: R. Macpherson Collection, DNW Auction 83, 30 September 2009, lot 3995 [from Baldwin September 1988]; DNW Auction 157, 21 February 2019, lot 459 The vendor points out that the first three obverse dies of what we call Class C all link with reverses that have a small d under v of vill, obviously harking back to the earlier class B coins. Later dies have details that more closely link with the coins of D1. Chronologically therefore, Stewart’s C2 should precede C1.
Charles I (1625-1649), Third coinage, Falconer’s Second issue, Twelve Shillings, mm. leaved thistle (between trefoils of pellets on obv.), colon stops on obv., reads mag brit fran et hib, f and pellet above crown, small harp, 5.66g/6h (Murray 2; cf. SCBI 35, 1509ff; B –; S 5562). Light crease, nearly very fine, a very rare variety £200-£260 --- Provenance: Bt A.D. Hamilton December 1981 The dies on this coin do not combine with any others in the series

Very fine with a strong portrait, grey tone £300-£400 --- Provenance: SNC January 1906 (23611); Dr. J. Davidson Collection, Part II, DNW Auction 60, 9-10 December 2003, lot 427 The vendor knows of only two other specimens with this die pairing - one in the Ashmolean (ex Hird), the other in the Coates Collection.
James III (1460-1488), Light issue, 1467, Groat, type Ic, Edinburgh, mm. cross pattée, tressure of eight arcs, trefoils on cusps except above crown, t and l by neck, reads d gra, legend ends scotor, rev. three pellets and annulet in first and fourth quarters, mullet of six points in second and third, cross before vil, double saltire stops both sides, 2.61g/12h (SCBI 35, 743-4 and B 3, fig. 568, same dies; SCBI 72, 767, same obv. die; S 5265). On a full flan, about very fine and very rare £800-£1,000 --- Provenance: From the Innerwick (East Lothian) Hoard 1979 (no. 65); bt D. Cavanagh June 1983 Although there is no documentary evidence for the weight reduction of the Scottish coinage, indirect evidence would suggest c. 1467, a few years after the English initiative. The sporadic mint records show 83 lbs of silver being struck June 1467-68, after almost no production during the previous couple of years. The initials by the neck are believed to stand for Thomas Tod and Alexander Levingstoun, who were appointed mintmasters probably in the early 1470s. The obverse die of the current specimen was used first at Edinburgh and later at Berwick.
