An Humble Petition offered to the right reverend, honourable, and worshipfull estates of this present Parliament assembled at Westminster Pallace, Wherein the wandering Ghost of the late Pyramis demolished lately in Paris, discourseth his hard fortunes, trauailes, and strange accidents to the new Brittaine Monarchie, with first leaf blank except for signature, woodcut device on title, woodcut initial and headpiece, a few spots to title, occasional light marking or minor soiling, but very good generally, straight-grain brown morocco by Best & Co., [STC 19884], small 4to, for Matthew Lownes, 1606.⁂ Rare anti-Jesuit tract, we can trace no copy at auction since 1977.
Ayscu (Warres) A Historie Contayning the Warres, Treaties, Marriages, and other occurents betweene England and Scotland, first edition, title with woodcut device depicting map of the British Isles within an uroboros border, woodcut initials and headpieces, with blank A8 but lacking blank A1, blindstamp to title, occasional light foxing or staining, ink ownership inscription to foot of P8 verso, bookplate to pastedown, 19th century half calf, extremities rubbed, [STC 1014], small 4to, by G. Eld, 1607.⁂ An abridgement of earlier histories, this work seeks to glorify King James I and defend his claim to the united crown. Provenance: Joseph Swayne (ink inscription); William Fuller Maitland (bookplate); Westminster College Library, Fulton, Missouri (blindstamp).
Hall (Joseph) Characters of Vertues and Vices. In Two Bookes, 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition, title within woodcut architectural border, divisional titles within typographic border, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, text within ruled borders, lacking initial and final blank ff., occasional light marginal soiling, contemporary ink inscription to foot of title, bookplate to title verso and pastedown, 19th century half calf, rubbed, [STC 12648], small 8vo, by Melch. Bradwood for Eleazar Edgar and Samuel Macham, and are to be sold at the sign of the Bul-head in Pauls Church-yard, 1608.⁂ First edition of this collection of satirical portraits in the manner of Theophrastus. Provenance: Will. Blofeld (ink inscription); Collegii Sti Augustii (bookplate).
Ireland.- Plantation of Ulster.- Conditions to be observed by the British Undertakers of Escheated Lands in Ulster, title with woodcut decorations on recto and coat of arms of James I to verso, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, very minor worming to head, occasional light foxing, modern calf-backed boards, [STC 24516], small 4to, By Robert Barker, printer to the Kings most excellent Maiestie, 1610.⁂ Rare pamphlet outlining laws and instructions for the British colonisation of Ulster that began in 1606. The Plantation of Ulster led to the lasting Ulster Protestant community and with that a firmer British rule over Ireland as well as resulting ethnic and sectarian divisions. We can trace only two copies at auction.
Jesuits.- Hellish and Horribble Councell (The), practised and used by the Jesuites when they would have a man to murther a King. According to those damnable instructions, given (by them) to that bloody villaine Francis Ravilliacke, the late French King. In answere of that impudent Pamphlet, published by Peter Cotton, first edition, mostly black letter, woodcut initials head- and tail-pieces, some light dampstaining, last 4ff. lower margins repaired, not affecting text, 20th century half calf, [STC 5862], small 4to, for T. B. and are to be sold by Iohn Wright at his shop in Christs-Church-gate, 1610.⁂ Rare anti-Jesuit pamphlet primarily aimed at attacked Pierre Coton (1564-1626), Henry IV of France's royal confessor. We can trace only one other copy at auction in the last 70 years.
Witchcraft.- Perkins (William) A Discourse of the Damned Art of Witchcraft, so farre as it is revealed in the Scriptures, and manifest by true experience, second edition, title within double-rule border with small woodcut decoration, woodcut initials and headpieces, 4ff. contents at end, some occasional light soiling, but a good, clean copy generally, ink inscription to title, upper corner of front free endpaper restored, catalogue description laid onto endpaper, bookplate to pastedown, contemporary reverse calf, sympathetically rebacked, corners repaired, [STC 19698], 8vo, Cambridge, Cantrel Legge, 1610.⁂ Scarce. Originally delivered as a sermon before being published posthumously. Perkins here affirms the existence of pacts with the devil and urges death for convicted witches.Provenance: E. W. Matthieu (Pierre) The Heroyk Life and Deplorable Death of the Most Christian King Henry the Fourth, 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition in English, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut portrait to A4 verso, light soiling and ink inscriptions to title, repaired tear to 2M2, ink stamp to foot of 2R4, occasional dampstaining and some browning, later half calf, rebacked, retaining original backstrip, rubbed, [STC 17661], small 4to, by George Eld, 1612.⁂ Matthieu (1563-1621) became the semi-official historian to the court of Henry IV of France and enjoyed special access to the king.

Duelling.- Bacon (Sir Francis) The charge of Sir Francis Bacon Knight, his Maiesties Attourney generall, touching duells, upon an information in the Star-chamber against Priest and Wright. With the decree of the Star-chamber in the same cause, first edition, lacking initial and final blank f., woodcut initials and head-pieces, some light browning, G1 with small repaired hole with loss to 1 or 2 letters of text, bookplate to pastedown, crushed brown morocco by Riviere & Son, spine lettered in gilt, inner gilt dentelles, light fading to spine, g.e., [Gibson 102; Thimm p.21; STC 1125], small 4to, Printed [by George Eld] for Robert Wilson, and are to be sold [by Robert Wilson and W. Bladen] at Graies Inne Gate, 1614.⁂ Bacon against duels. He brought his case to court to see if it could 'doe any good to tame and reclaime that evill which seems unbridled'. He viewed duels as a threat to authority and against the will of God.Provenance: crowned armorial bookplate with motto "Honi Soit qui Mal Y Pense."

True Relation (The) of the Deserved Death of that base and insolent Tyrant, the Marquis d'Ancre, the most Unworthie Marshall of France, lacking initial and final blank ff., title with small chip to head, 1617 bound with The Letter of the French King, to the Parliament of Roan, concerning the Death of the Marshall D'Ancre, horizontal tear to title and some chipping to head, 1617 together 2 works in 1 vol., titles with woodcut devices, woodcut initials and headpieces, light dampstaining, 20th century calf, [STC 5622 & 16835], small 4to. ⁂ A scarce pair of works concerning Concino Concini (1569-1617), later Marquis d'Ancre, an Italian adventurer who went to France with Marie de Medicis when she married Henry IV. He stirred up the queen's enmity against Henry, and on Henry's death gained great power, becoming Marshall and Prime Minister. He was assassinated by the Baron de Vitry in 1617.

Wherein the Cause, Course, and Continuance of those Warres, is debated, and declared, first edition, title with typographic ornament, woodcut initials and headpiece, light soiling to title, A4 with chip and tear at head running into headline, G1 with lower corner torn away, not affecting text, some chipping or fraying to corners, occasional dampstaining to foot, but generally clean, ink inscription to head of title, later calf, neatly rebacked, [STC 13264.8], Printed at London [but ?Holland], 1623.⁂ Sometimes attributed to Thomas Scott. Excommunication of Elizabeth I.- [Norton (Thomas)] An Addition Declaratorie to the Bulles, with a Searching of the Maze, black letter, woodcut initial, some light marginal soiling, a few underlinings and marginal notes in an early hand, 20th century half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, g.e., [STC 18678a], By John Daye dwelling ouer Aldersgate, [1570].⁂ A response to the "Regnans in Excelsis" papal bull of 1570 which excommunicated Elizabeth I, released her subjects from allegiance to her and excommunicated any who obeyed her orders.
Rainoldes (John) Th' Overthrow of Stage-Playes, by way of controversie betwixt D. Gager and D. Webbe, 1629.⁂ Second edition of this interesting attack on Elizabethan theatre that includes much on contemporary attitudes as well as references to two of the earliest venues, The Theatre and The Curtain.

According to the direction of God's Word... the severall duties of the Husband towards his Wife; and the Wives dutie towards her Husband...First, gathered by R.C. and now newly perused, amended, and augmented, by John Dod, and Robert Clever, woodcut initials and headpieces, with initial and final blank ff., light foxing and browning, ink ownership inscriptions to title and endpapers, front free endpapers detached, book-label to pastedown, contemporary calf, rebacked, retaining original backstrip, corners repaired, light wear to extremities, rubbed, small 8vo, by the assignes of Thomas Man, and are to be sold by Iohn Clarke, vnder St. Peters Church in Cornhill, 1630.⁂ Rare, in all editions, ESTC lists only 4 copies of this edition (not in BL). It was first published in 1598 and is variously attributed to Roger Carr, John Deacon and Robert Caudry.Provenance: J. Lowell (ink inscription); Arnold Muirhead (book-label).
Agard (Arthur) The Repertorie of Records: Remaining in The 4. Treasuries on the Receipt side at Westminster. The two Remembrancers of the Exchequer, [edited by Thomas Powell], first edition, first leaf blank except for signature "A" on recto, woodcut initials and headpieces, title with ink inscription and small hole to head, occasional light damp-staining to head but generally clean, Richard Towneley's copy with his armorial bookplate to verso of title, upper joint broken, some paper torn away from pastedown, contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties, soiled, [STC 194.1], small 4to, by B. Alsop and T. Favvcet, for B. Fisher, dwelling at the signe of the Talbot in Aldersgate-street, 1631.⁂ Scarce, Agard (1540-1615), was appointed deputy-chamberlain in 1570 and held the office for 45 years, during which time his chief responsibility was the inventorying of the 4 treasuries at Westminster. The documents under his care included the Domesday book which was kept under special care in his office and a line of which is reproduced in facsimile on p. 132.Provenance: William Headlam (early ink ownership inscription); Richard Towneley (1629-1707, mathematician, natural philosopher and astronomer, armorial bookplate).

Begun at the general sessions for the county of Cornwall, held at Bodmyn, and continued at Fowy, first edition, large illustrative woodcut to title, woodcut initials and headpieces, occasional light foxing, but a good, clean copy generally, early 20th century half calf, a little rubbed, [Goldsmiths' 624; Kress S.619; STC 10938], small 4to, By J. B. for Michael Sparke at the blew Bible in Greenarbor, 1631.⁂ Fitz-Geffrey's attack on those hoarding corn to sell at a higher price, with the excellent title woodcut of an infested grain silo being set alight. More's response is set in the form of a dialogue between himself and Tyndale (with Tyndale's statements presented in a rather attractive italic font), both parts were published by More's nephew William Rastell, the second part was published after More's resignation as Chancellor.

An entertaining collection of esoteric facts and knowledge including the invention of printing by Guttenberg, the invention of guns, descriptions of a whale, an Indian tiger, an elephant, a crocodile and a unicorn and a reference to America on p. 372 as "an Iland round about environed with the great Ocean: but the length and bredth no man knoweth."

He was the owner of the estate of Goxhill in Lincolnshire. In 1592 his half-brother attempted to shoot him with a pistol. Shocked, he took a house on Grub Street and remained there, in near-total seclusion, for the rest of his life. Hodgkinson], 1639.⁂ Scarce anti-Presbyterian pamphlet described by Robert Baille as "one of the most venomous and bitter pamphlets against us all that could come from the hand of our most furious and enraged enemy."

Royston, 1649, together 2 works in 1 vol., first editions, letterpress titles within double-rule borders and with woodcut devices, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, occasional light marginal damp-staining, small rust or similar holes to first work 3R5, 3Y1 & 4A1 and second work I1, N3, O1 & O4, with loss to 1 or 2 letters of text, contemporary calf, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, covers rubbed and scuffed, folio. ⁂ Two good collections of sermons by Donne one volume. The prefatory essay in the first is the first printing of Izaak Walton's classic Life of Donne. While the second is listed as the second volume on the title, it is regarded as a separate work in its own right.

Marshall, title and text within double- and single-rule borders, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, numerous engraved and woodcut illustrations and diagrams, with an errata f. following each part, first 2a1&2 bound at end of first part, lacking blank f. at end of first part, occasional light dampstaining, a few small chips or tears to margins, but very good generally, contemporary sheep, rebacked, corners worn, rubbed, [STC 25641], 8vo, for John Maynard, & are to be sold at the George, in Fleetstreet neare St. Dunstans Church, 1640.⁂ Wilkins' first work, his attempt to prove that the moon was habitable.
Civil War pamphlets.- A collection of 31 Civil War pamphlets, woodcut ornaments and coats of arms, occasional light staining or soiling, together in contemporary wrappers with a contents list supplied in an early hand to inside covers, some chipping to covers, preserved in custom morocco-backed drop-back box, 1642; and a copy of The Prerogative of Parliaments in England, small 4to (2) ⁂ An excellent group of pamphlets, many rare, all from June and July of 1642 with the King and Parliament essentially irreconcilable, leading up Charles' raising of his standard at Nottingham Castle on 22nd August, marking the beginning of the Civil War. Pamphlets present include:1) Most Welcome Newes from York, Being a true and perfect Relation of what hath happened in York...Also the faithfull service of the Lord Paget for the Country... Also the Discovery of a most strange and terrible Attempt of M. Johnson in Darby, against Mr. James his wife in the same town, his damnable Design against the Town of Darby, and the Discovery thereof, [not in Wing], Willian Arding, 1642. 2) Charles I. His Majesties Resolution concerning the setting up of his Standard... New England religion.- Cotton (John) The Churches Resurrection, or the Opening of the Fift and sixt verses of the 20th Chap. of the Revelation. By that Learned and Reverend, Iohn Cotton Teacher to the Church of Boston in New England, first edition, title within typograhic border, woodcut initial and headpiece, with final blank f., small marginal repairs to title and A2, occasional light marginal foxing, bookplate to pastedown, 20th century boards, [Sabin 17054; Wing C6419], small 4to, by R. O. & G. D. for Henry Overton, and are to be sold at his shop in Popes-head-Alley, 1642.⁂ Scarce pamphlet by Cotton (1585-1652), minister and so-called "Patriarch of New England". Cotton here compares religion in New England with that practiced in Europe, attacking the Catholic Church in particular, equating it to the seven-headed beast in the book of Revelation.Provenance: Fairfax of Cameron (armorial bookplate).
Number of the Beast.- Potter (Francis) An Interpretation of Number 666, first edition, engraved pictorial title by W. Marshall, 1 full-page engraved illustration, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut numerological illustrations, title with neat repairs to inner margins, S4 with small rust-hole touching text, stab-holes to inner margins, some very light foxing or finger-soiling, but a clean and well-margined copy generally, biography of the author supplied in an early hand on endpaper, bookplate to pasedown, later vellum-backed cloth, [Madan II, 1032; Wing P3028], small 4to, Oxford, by Leonard Lichfield, 1642.⁂ A theory on the Number of the Beast by this English clergyman, scientitific instrument maker, early member of the Royal Society and friend of John Aubrey. Potter had connected the number 25 (the approximate square root of 66) with Catholic institutions. The book contains a preface by the emminent biblical scholar Joseph Mede, who described Potter's "discovery" as 'the happiest that ever yet came into the world'.Provenance: J. A. Shakespeare (William).- [Breton (Nicholas)] England's Selected Characters, Describing the Good and Bad Worthies of this Age, first edition, title within typographic border, light soiling to title, a few ff. lightly frayed at fore-margin, stitchmarks at inner margins occasionally touching text, attractive red crushed morocco, gilt, by Elizabeth Greenhill, [Wing B4384], small 4to, for T. S., 1643.⁂ Scarce first addition of this abridgement of Breton's The Good and the Badde (1616). With an early reference to Shakespeare's Richard III in the description of a character of An Unworthy Lawyer.
C[orbet] (R[ichard]) Poëtica Stromata or a Collection of Sundry Peices in Poetry, second edition, with final contents f., light worming to first 3 gatherings with occasional loss to 1 or 2 letters of test, I1 with small hole to lower margin caused by printing error with loss to signature, light foxing and soiling, occasional corrections or marginal notes in a contemporary hand, attractive modern antique-style black morocco, gilt, [Wing C6272], small 8vo, n.p. [France or Holland], 1648.⁂ First edition under this title, originally published as Certain Elegant Poems in 1647, and with several poems added. It was published posthumously and probably printed on the Continent. Above the poem "An Exhortation" an early hand has inscribed "This is none of Dr. Corbets" with the poem signed "J. Harris" at foot.

The Northern Lyon, or Lyon of the North, and Chicken of the Eagle discovered who they are, of what nation. English, Latin, Saxon, Scotish and Welch prophecies concerning England in particular, and all Europe in generall. Passages upon the life and death of the late King Charles. Aenigmaticall types of the future state and condition of England for many years to come, first edition, woodcut initials, 19 full-page woodcut illustrations, 2 diagrams in text, 3 woodcuts repaired at margins, browning and occasional light soiling, D4 corner defective with loss to page number, 20th century calf, [Wing L2228], small 4to, for Humfrey Blunden, at the sign of the Castle in Corn-hill, 1651.⁂ Famous collection of prophesies by Lilly (1602-1681), the astrologer and almanac publisher. Two of the woodcuts (likely executed by the author) brought particular notoriety as they appeared to predict both the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London, two events that would not occur until 14 and 15 years respectively after the publication of this work.

Eating black pudding.- [Barlow (Thomas)] The Triall of a Black-Pudding. Or, the Unlawfulness of Eating Blood proved by Scriptures, first edition, the Huth-Fairfax copy, title within typographic border with typographic ornament, woodcut initial and headpiece, light surface soiling to title, some margins a little darkened, 20th century calf, gilt, spine faded, [Wing B846], small 4to, by F:N. and are to be sold by John Hancock in Popes Head Alley, 1652.⁂ First edition of this rare and eccentric tract debating the eating of black pudding on theological grounds.
