On close inspection light cracking in the pigment is most apparent over a large part of the right hand section of the canvas, much of the bottom left hand quarter section, in the area middle and right, at top and to a lesser extent in the top left hand corner section over the area of the sky.

There is a light to moderate degree of cracking in the pigment over most of the canvas surface and five areas where the canvas has been damaged in varying degrees, one in proximity to the top left hand corner with slight paint loss, another to the left of the top of the sitter's head with retouching, another to the right of the sitter's right shoulder being a pressure line with slight paint loss and not through the canvas, approximately 5 centimetres in length, a small one at bottom edge and middle with paint loss and finally one area, approximately 10 centimetres in length running vertically with retouching. . .

ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN KNOX (SCOTTISH 1778-1845) IONA CATHEDRAL Oil on canvas, 55 x 76.5cm (21 1/2 x 30") The Scottish National Gallery have in their collection a watercolour, pen and ink over pencil study by John Knox of the same view and approximate date Sold on behalf of the Iona Community Capital Appeal Condition Report: The painting has been lined and on close inspection there is cracking to a fairly light degree of the pigment over most of the surface area of the canvas. Under Ultra violet light there are visible at least seven small individual areas of retouching as well as a cluster of at least six tiny dots of retouching located near the middle of the canvas. There are also two very small damage marks to the pigment visible, one close to the centre of the canvas and the other in close proximity to the bottom left hand corner.

There are four areas verso, one of which has a patch, that correspond to restoration work recto, located within the left hand section of the canvas. There is also a small darkish area verso, that corresponds to a small area of restoration recto, located within the lower right hand quarter section.

There is cracking evident to a lesser degree within much of the lower right hand quarter section. Within the lower left hand quarter section there are areas of cracking with the result of paint flaking off from the canvas surface.

The surface varnish is discoloured and there are generally small marks and marks where slight damage with paint loss has occurred.
