Two (2) examples of WWI Necessity Money occupation coinage from the city of Ghent, Belgium. Grade: VF-EF - Very Fine to Extremely Fine details, light toning with no real issues. Between 1914 and 1918 Ghent in neutral Belgium was occupied by the forces of the German Empire. Individual cities and regions responded by manufacturing their own hyper-local currency. The issues made in Ghent during the First World War are particularly unusual in their design and manufacture. Smaller denominations like 50 Centimes, 1 Franken and 2 Franken coins have an iron core and are plated on one side with brass and the other with copper. The large 5 Franken coins issued in 1917, feature a legend that translates as 'Exchangeable January 1920'.
