Richard Strebel (German, 1861-1940)'Baldur and Herta', Newfoundlands on a beachsigned, inscribed and dated 'Richard Strebel Munchen 99' l.r., also signed, inscribed with title and dated verso, oil on canvas62.5 x 78.5cmStrebel depicts two important Newfoundland dogs that helped establish the breed in Germany. Professor Waszily of Von der Ostsee Kennels was a founding member of the German Newfoundland Club in 1893, which became one of the largest breeding clubs for Newfoundland dogs in Europe. Waszily bred Herta and Baldur, who were born from the same litter on 28 May 1898. Strebel was a famous animal painter and produced an illustrated two-volume work titled 'The German Dogs and their Ancestry' (1903-5). He produced a similar painting depicting the three varieties of Newfoundland playing on the beach for the German Newfoundland Club, which became their club emblem.Framed size: 80 x 96cm.Canvas is unlined, stretcher marks are apparent, some craquelure and surface dirt, a very small loss in sky area, the surface is covered in an uneven varnish which makes any reading under uv light difficult; however, there has possibly been a little strengthening to the darker tones of the dog's coat and possibly also in the background. Would benefit from a surface clean. Generally in a stable condition.

Surface dirt, stretcher marks and some craquelure apparent. The surface is covered with an uneven layer of varnish, which fluoresces slightly under uv light. Some of the craquelure above the horse and to the top of the horse is slightly raised and uneven, which may indicate some consolidation where corresponding retouching has occured in the past. Due to the varnish layer, it is unclear under uv light the extent to which this has occured. Some losses to frame. Generally in a stable condition, would benefit from a light clean.

Small losses to frame at corners. This is based on close observation under raking light, and when stood back looking at the work on a wall, in our opinion, these do not overly distract and it remains a pleasing image. There is a just visible fine craquelure in parts and faint stretcher mark to the right edge. There are several tiny abrasions with corresponding paint loss, one to the centre and a tiny one to the lower right, see illustration. The surface is covered with a thick layer of varnish which obscures much of the surface, however, occasional minor restorations are apparent in places, including a spot to the side of the right hand dog, and some strengthening to the edge of the standing rider's coat. With the naked eye in raking light, there are some small areas in places where the varnish looks a little patch, however, there are no significant signs of repaired damages and the paint is not thin. Generally, the work is presented ready to hang in a stable and clean condition, nicely framed in a suitable gilt composition frame.

The canvas tension is slightly slack and stretcher bar marks have formed in the paint layer. Two prominent stretcher bar marks run horizontally across the centre of the painting and the paint here is raised and flaking. There are a few scattered losses to the paint layer which have been retouched, but overall, the paint layers are stable and secure. The varnish has slightly yellowed and is even and semi-glossy with a light layer of surface dirt.
