The manuscript document relates to Jane, Countess of Rochester, and is a warrant to make a payment of £1000 without account to her, being one half of the annual amount due to her as granted by His Majesty 'in consideration of the loss sustained by that Family from the Fire which burnt their House at Petersham near Richmond in Surrey'. Signed by Walpole in the right margin and countersigned by Henry Pelham (1694-1754) British Prime Minister 1743-54 and George Baillie (1664-1738) Scottish Politician, Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. Signed by the Countess of Rochester and her witness individually to the verso beneath a brief manuscript note acknowledging receipt of the full payment. With a single ink line running diagonally through the text of the document. With blank integral leaf. The Private Secretary forwards the signature on behalf of the Emperor and adds 'I am to request that you will regard this strictly as a personal honour to yourself and that it shall remain in your own possession'. KRUGER PAUL: (1825-1904) South African President 1883-1900. Kruger gained international renown as the face of Boer resistance against the British during the Second Boer War, 1899-1902. D.S., S J P Kruger, one page, folio, Pretoria, 30th August 1898. The partially printed document, in Afrikaans (untranslated), relates to Daniel Jansen van Vuren and appears to be a land registry document. Signed by Kruger at the foot. A purple rubber stamp, affecting the first two initials of Kruger's signature, indicates that the land was transferred on 20th July 1903 into the name of Vuren's wife, Maria. AIREY RICHARD: (1803-1881) British General who served as Quartermaster-General under Lord Raglan in the Crimean War. Following Raglan's instructions Airey issued the fateful order for the Charge of the Light Brigade. A.L.S., Airey, three pages, 8vo, Lowndes Square, 10th April 1879, to Hopkins. Airey asks his correspondent 'Please, be so good as to let me know what the "Papers" relate to which you require' and further remarks 'I have been searching today thro' a great mass, and can not remember what you refer to?' Airey also informs his correspondent that he will be staying at a hotel in Upper Norwood for ten days ('for a change of air') but will be constantly driving backwards and forwards. [LIND JENNY]: (1820-1887) Swedish Opera Singer, known as the Swedish Nightingale. An unsigned 12mo theatre ticket for 'M'lle Jenny Lind's Third Grand Concert', 23rd June 1851, the ticket having been given the number 144 in bold black ink, being a $4 seat for the Gallery. With Jenny Lind's facsimile signature to the lower edge of the ticket, adjacent to the terms and conditions. Neatly laid down. With light dust toning and minor age wear. G At the height of her fame Lind was persuaded by the showman P. T. Barnum to undertake a long tour of the United States beginning in September 1850 and ending in May 1852. Barnum's advance publicity made Lind a celebrity even before she arrived in the U.S., provoking a popular furore dubbed 'Lind Mania'. However, the singer found Barnum's relentless commercial promotion of her increasingly distasteful, and she terminated her contract with him in 1851 under amicable circumstances, continuing to tour for nearly a year under her own management.

Ragan served as Commander of the British Forces during the Crimean War, giving the fateful order which led to the Charge of the Light Brigade (1854). A.L.S., Fitzroy Somerset, one page, 4to, Gallegos, Spain, 28th January 1812, to a Gentleman. Somerset informs his correspondent 'I enclose a letter (no longer present) for Col Torrens which I will thank you to deliver to Gordon if he should not have sailed when this reaches you. If he has pray send it by the earliest opportunity as it contains the… of our loss in the late operation against Ciudad Rodrigo.' With some light age wear. VG Henry Torrens (1779-1828) British Army Officer, Adjutant-General to the Forces. James Willoughby Gordon (1772-1851) British Army Officer, Quartermaster-General to the Forces. The Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo (7th-20thJanuary 1812), Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese Army besieged the city's French garrison under General of Brigade Jean Léonard Barrié. After two breaches were blasted in the walls by British heavy artillery, the fortress was successfully stormed on the evening of 19thJanuary 1812. Wellington's army suffered casualties of about 1,700 men the death of two Generals.

ENGLAND FOOTBALL: A blue painted wooden seat back removed from Wembley Stadium, the seat back measuring approximately 16 x 9.5 and with the white painted number 37 at the centre of the top edge, individually signed by the England footballers Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, both members of England's World Cup winning team of 1966. Both have signed with their names alone in black inks. Attractively mounted and with a pale blue and cream matt featuring four different images from the World Cup final of 1966 and an official printed 8vo certificate of authenticity signed by the Director of Finance of Wembley Stadium and stating, in part, 'the accompanying piece is one of...[the]...original Wembley Stadium seat backs which were removed on Saturday, 6th October 2002. [WATERLOO BATTLE OF]: SOMERSET FITZROY (1788-1855) 1st Baron Raglan. British Field Marshal who served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington and was present at the Battle of Waterloo (where he had to have his right arm amputated). Somerset is most famous for his role as overall commander of the British Forces during the Crimean War, where he gave the fateful order which led to the Charge of the Light Brigade. A.L.S., Fitzroy Somerset, two pages, 8vo, Horse Guards, 7th May 1845, to George Tucker. Somerset states that he has communicated with Colonel Williams regarding the expediency of his son's appearance at Addicombe after the summer vacation, and explains that he has received a letter 'stating that the youth was admitted last February and has been at the Academy ever since'. BINYON LAURENCE: (1869-1943) English Poet whose most famous work, For the Fallen, is used in Remembrance Sunday Services. A fine A.L.S., Laurence Binyon, three pages, 8vo, London, 4th October 1932, to Mr. Lapage, on the attractive printed stationery of the British Museum. Binyon acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's book and states 'I see no reason why you should despond about your poems, though one may well be made to despond by the reception the world gives to poetry', continuing 'I feel myself that if what most reviewers say about my verse is true then I don't want to go on writing'. Binyon further offers his correspondent his opinion of their work, along with some constructive criticism, 'There is plenty of technical accomplishment in your book, and force of feeling coming through it. The blank verse is vigorous & alive. You ask me to write candidly about 'faults'….I rather fancy that your poems have too much 'reason' in them, I mean that they seem to belong too much to the plane of the self-conscious reasoning mind which observes, argues & concludes; resulting sometimes in a rather prosaic cast of phrase. Of course that is all right in the satiric vein which you open up now & then….I suppose there may be wanting to your poems a certain newness & difference of voice which is what fixes attention: at least not sufficiently marked to impose itself. Many people try to get this by tricks & stunts so as to be thought original; but the only originality is the release of one's uniqueness. I think perhaps you accept phrases - possibly thoughts also - that come too easily & not from your own depths. I'm afraid I express myself very badly, & dislike criticising anyhow'. Binyon also informs his correspondent that he has recently been translating Dante '& have found it a marvellous discipline' and concludes by hoping that his remarks have not been unhelpful. A letter of good content, written in the poet's typically elegant hand. A couple of very light, extremely minor stains only very slightly affect a few words of text to the second page, which remain perfectly legible. Otherwise EX Geoffrey Lapage (1888-1971) English Parasitologist and Writer, lecturer in Zoology at the University of Manchester. Binyon had been employed at the British Museum following his graduation in 1893 and at the time of the present letter was Keeper of the Prints and Drawing Department. He retired in 1933 and over the next decade published his acclaimed translation of Dante's Divine Comedy, which had been completed with some editorial assistance from his friend Ezra Pound.

Jameson, two pages, 8vo, London, 14th December 1894, to Sir William Broadbent, on the printed stationery of the Burlington Hotel. Jameson informs his correspondent that there is 'practically no doubt' that he shall be able to dine with him on the 20th and will leave London later, adding 'I should hear tomorrow from the Cape if I have to go sooner & wd. let you know by a telegram at once'. In concluding he writes 'As to your kind suggestion of friends to meet - Pepper and Phillips are amongst my oldest and would give me the greatest pleasure'. [HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. VON BISMARCK OTTO CHRISTIAN ARCHIBALD (1897-1975) Prince of Bismarck. German Politician & Diplomat. T.L.S., Bismarck, one page, 4to, London, 2nd April 1935, to Miss [Eileen] Cond, on the Prince's personal printed stationery from the German Embassy. Bismarck thanks his correspondent for her kind letter and explains 'Unfortunately it will not be possible to get you a signature of Herr Hitler, as he declines giving his signature to anybody'. In a holograph conclusion the Prince invites Cond to come and see him at the Embassy if she comes to London. Together with a T.L.S. by a member of Hitler's staff at his Chancellery, one page, small 4to, Berlin, 24th March 1934, to Herr Cond, in German. The official writes on behalf of the Fuhrer and states, in part, 'I am sorry to inform you that the exceedingly great demand & the great number of similar requests makes it impossible to fulfil your wishes for a personal signature'. Also including a series of T.Ls.S. etc., by various secretaries and officials on behalf of other famous individuals, most political leaders and members of Royal families, the majority written to Eileen Cond in the 1930s and politely declining her requests for signatures, including representatives of Benito Mussolini (in part, 'I regret to inform you that the Head of the Italian Government, following a practice he has adopted and from which he does not feel he can depart, is very sorry to be unable to comply with your request of granting you his autograph'), King Edward VIII (accompanied by a portion of the original registered envelope featuring the typed address panel bearing a square ERI VIII rubber stamp to the lower left corner), King Leopold III of Belgium, Prince Arthur of Connaught, Queen Victoria Eugenie, Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, Italo Balbo, Maurice Ravel, J. Also including individual ink signatures of King George VI ('Albert', as Duke of York, dated 2nd May 1925 in his hand, on a page removed from an autograph album) and Henry, Duke of Gloucester ('Henry', on a clipped piece).
