Galsworthy thanks his correspondent for having sent him a postcard 'from the place we like so much' and adds 'Its very exciting to hear that you have left Katharine to the tender mercies of the Germans', further remarking that he had been in Ireland for most of August and enquiring as to when he is going to see his correspondent again, stating that they should arrange something for when he returns to London, and also asking 'Are you very tall?' Galsworthy concludes by writing 'Please give our kindest remembrances to your father, & our love to yourself; and send greetings to Katharine when you write'. PICASSO & COCTEAU: PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement & COCTEAU JEAN: (1889-1963) French poet, playwright, novelist, artist, filmmaker and critic. An excellent vintage signed 4 x 6 photograph by both Picasso and Cocteau individually, the image depicting the two hugely influential figures of 20th century art engaged in conversation with Pierre Bertrand, a specialist supplier of paper for printmaking and engravings, who can be seen standing in the immediate background. Signed (‘Picasso’) by Picasso in blue ink and signed (‘Jean Cocteau’) by Cocteau in fountain pen ink, adding a small star beneath his signature, both to the lower white border. Dated 20th May 1956 to the verso. The signature of Cocteau is a touch light although remains perfectly legible. A highly desirable signed image of the two artists. VG The present photograph was signed by Cocteau and Picasso just a few months before the Spanish artist celebrated his 75th birthday with a party at Vallauris on 25th October 1956. Cocteau was amongst the close friends with whom Picasso celebrated.

FRENCH REVOLUTION: Manuscript D.S. by Jean-Marie Forest (1752-1799; French General during the French Revolution), Pierre Garnier de Laboissiere (1755-1809; French General during the French Revolution, appointed a Comte de l’empire by Napoleon in 1808) and three other individuals, each in their capacity as chief board members of the council of administration of the 2nd Regiment de Chasseurs a Cheval, one page, oblong 8vo, Lauterbach, 19th September 1793, in French. The document is a Campaign Certificate in which the council members attest to Louis Francois Roux having completed forty-nine years of effective service, including six campaigns in Hanover and two with the army of the Rhine during 1792 and 1793. LUDWIG I: (1786-1868) King of Bavaria 1825-48. L.S., Louis, one page, 4to, Munich, 10th August 1837, to the King of the Two Sicilies, in French. King Ludwig writes a diplomatic letter, stating that he has received his correspondent’s letter ‘par laquelle Votre Majeste a bien voulu m'informer de l'union conclue entre son altesse Royale le Comte de Syracuse son tres-aime frere & son altesse Royale Madame la Princesse Marie Philiberte de Savoir Carignan’ (Translation: ‘by which Your Majesty kindly informed me of the union concluded between His Royal Highness the Count of Syracuse, His beloved brother, and Her Royal Highness Madame Princess Marie Philiberte de Savoir Carignan’) and continuing ‘Votre Majeste connait trop bien les sentiments d'attachement que j'ai pour elle et l'interet vif & sincere que je prends a tout ce qui regarde sa famille Royale pour ne pas etre convaincu de l'extreme satisfaction que me fait eprouver cet heureux evenement’ (Translation: ‘Your Majesty knows too well the feelings of attachment that I have for Him and the lively and sincere interest that I take in everything that concerns His Royal family not to be convinced of the extreme satisfaction that this happy event makes me feel’). Countersigned at the foot by Baron Friedrich August von Gise (1783-1860) Bavarian diplomat and politician who served as Minister of the Royal Household and Foreign Affairs 1832-46. With blank integral leaf (small circular stain caused by the original seal). Accompanied by the original envelope wrapper (area of paper loss to the lower edge) bearing a black wax seal. A couple of light stains, not affecting the text or signature, VG Ferdinand II (1810-1859) King of the Two Sicilies 1830-59. The King’s brother, Prince Leopold, Count of Syracuse (1813-1860) had married Princess Maria Vittoria of Savoy (1814-1874) on 16th June 1837 in Naples. It was an ill-matched union, and their marriage was an unhappy one which produced just one child who died in infancy.

FLAUBERT GUSTAVE: (1821-1880) French novelist. A.L.S., Gte. Flaubert, two pages, (written to the first and third sides of the bifolium), 8vo, n.p., n.d. ('Lundi, 3 heures'), to 'Ma Chere Caroline' [Commanville], in French. Flaubert laments the fact that since his correspondent returned to Paris he has wanted to see her, but not been able to, explaining'Mais je suis surcharge ou plutot surmene de travail. Je me suis jure d'avoir fini mon livre a la fin de la semaine prochaine - et je ne bouge!' (Translation: 'But I am overloaded or rather overworked with work. I swore I'd finish my book by the end of next week - and I'm not moving!'), further adding that Caroline's aunt is alone and bored at Croisset and has asked that Caroline pay her a visit as she had promised to, remarking 'Je n'aime pas a la savoir longtemps dans la solitude et comme je ne peux m'en retourner a Croisset avant un mois, j'aimerais bien a ce que tu passes un peu pres d'elle d'ici-la' (Translation: 'I don't like to know her for long in solitude and since I can't go back to Croisset for a month, I would really like you to pass a little near her by then'). A few light creases and small pinholes and with a neat, small split to the base of the central vertical fold, otherwise VG Caroline Commanville (1846-1931) French painter, niece of Flaubert as the daughter of Flaubert's sister, Caroline (1824-1846) and her husband Emile Hamard (1821-1877). The aunt which Flaubert refers to in the present letter is likely to have been Julie Lormier (1818-1883) who had married Flaubert's elder brother, Achille (1813-1882) in 1839.

MAUPERTUIS PIERRE LOUIS: (1698-1759) French mathematician, philosopher and man of letters, the first President of the Prussian Academy of Science at the invitation of Frederick the Great. An excellent L.S., Maupertuis, two pages, 8vo, Berlin, 30th December 1752, to Francois-Augustin de Paradis de Moncrif, in French. Maupertuis states that he had no doubt of the part his correspondent would take in the letter which he sent him a few days ago, and continues ‘Vous n'en prendrez pas moins a tout ce qui s'est passe depuis cette lettre ayant mis Voltaire au desespoir, il a pousse ses horreurs contremoi au point de donner a ce pays-ci un spectacle qui…… n'y avait point ete vu depuis le reigne de Frederic I. Dimanche passe son libelle fut brule par la main du bourreau sous la potence et dans toutes les places publiques. Cette execution beaucoup plus infamante encore ici qu'elle n'est en France, a ete faitte par ordre expres du Roy, au grand applaudissement de tous les honnetes gens, et meme de la populace, on vit arriver de toutes parts des gens en fiacre pour se chauffer a ce feu’ (Translation: ‘You will take nothing less from everything that has happened since this letter, having driven Voltaire to despair, he pushed his horrors against me to the point of giving this country a spectacle which……had not been seen there since the reign of Frederick I. Last Sunday his libel was burned by the hand of the executioner under the gallows and in all the public places. This execution, much more infamous here than it is in France, was carried out by express order of the King, to the great applause of all honest people, and even of the populace, people were seen arriving from all parts in cabs to warm themselves by this fire’). Maupertuis assures de Moncrif ‘dans la plus exacte verite que je n'ai jamais rendu que des services a Voltaire, que je n'ai jamais ecrit un mot contre lui’ (Translation: ‘with the most exact truth that I have never rendered anything but services to Voltaire, that I have never written a word against him’) and also writes that ‘Le Roy m'ecrivit le soir une lettre charmante et m'envoyait pour poudre rafrai chissante les cendres de la diatribe’ (Translation: ‘The King wrote me a charming letter that evening and sent me the ashes of the diatribe as refreshing powder’). A letter of fascinating content and with good associations. The blank integral leaf neatly inlaid and with a contemporary ink annotation to the upper left corner. Some light foxing and staining, predominantly to the edges of the letter. GFrancois-Augustin de Paradis de Moncrif (1687-1770) French writer and poet, historiographer royal to King Louis XV of France.Voltaire (1694-1778) Francois-Marie Arouet. French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher.In mid-1750 Voltaire had moved to Prussia at the invitation of Frederick the Great who appointed the writer a chamberlain of the royal household and also granted him the Order of Merit with a salary of 20,000 French livres a year. In 1751 Voltaire successfully completed his science fiction work Micromegas, however relationships with Frederick began to sour after Voltaire was accused of theft and forgery by Abraham Hirschel, a Jewish financier. Other difficulties arose for Voltaire including an argument with Maupertuis provoked by the former’s Diatribe du docteur Akakia which satirised some of Maupertuis’s theories and his persecutions of Johann Samuel Konig, a mutual acquaintance. This greatly angered Frederick the Great who ordered all copies of the work to be burned. Voltaire offered to resign his post and return his insignia of the Order of Merit, however Frederick at first refused until eventually allowing Voltaire to leave in March 1752. Provenance: From the celebrated collection of Robert de Flers (1872-1927) French playwright, opera librettist and journalist. The manuscripts amassed by de Flers were dispersed in 2014 at an auction in Paris conducted by Beaussant Lefevre.

Rossini writes a charming letter in praise of his favourite singer, in part, ‘En m'accordant la permission de vous adresser ces quelques lignes de recommendation, permettez moi de vous presenter l'artiste de ma predilection Madm. Stoltz, son talent! sa grace, son esprit, doivent lui meriter votre admiration, cette assurance m'est d'autant plus precieuse qu'elle m'autorise a placer cette eminente artiste sous votre protection speciale’ (Translation: ‘By granting myself permission to send you these few lines of recommendation, allow me to introduce you to my favourite artist, Madame Stoltz. Her talent! Her grace, her spirit, must merit your admiration. This assurance is all the more precious to me as it allows me to place this eminent artist under your special protection’). With integral address panel in Rossini’s hand, addressed to the Marquise (‘Dame d'honneur de S. M. La Reine Marie Therese’) in Turin. A letter of good content and interesting association. A couple of light creases and some very minimal age wear, VGMarquise Faustina Roero di Cortanze (1798-1872) Maid of Honour to Maria Theresa of Austria (1801-1855) Queen of Sardinia (1831-49) by her marriage to King Charles Albert of Sardinia. The Marquise attended duties of high responsibility and was in charge of the charitable activities entrusted to the Queen. Rosine Stoltz (1815-1903) French mezzo-soprano who created many leading roles including Ascanio in Hector Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini. Stoltz also sang in many of Rossini’s operas including The Barber of Seville, Tancredi and Otello.

The manuscript letter informs the King, 'Our Dear Brother and Friend.. after having accepted the petition received from our Privy Councillor, Chamberlain and Cavalier Count Adam Matushevits, who is residing now at the Court of Your Majesty as our Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Minister, we relieve him from his duty and Envoy..´. Countersigned at the foot by Karl Nesselrode. Accompanied by the original envelope wrapper bearing a large Imperial paper seal. A.L.S., Rouget de Lisle, one page, 4to, Paris, 3rd June 1825, to Monsieur Juillerat, in French. Rouget de Lisle writes concerning some confusion over the delivery of a book and states, in part, ‘Mlle. Juillerat a bien voulu se changer de vous prevenir qu'Amaury Duval m'avait promis de vous adresser de suite l'exemplaire des fables Russes ququel vous avez droit de pretendre et dont l'envoi n'avait ete retarde que par erreur ou par oubli. Il se trouve que soit l'un soit l'autre n'ont eu lieu. J'appris hier d'Alexandre Duval que l'exemplaire en question lui avait ete remis par sone frere, des le moment de sa publication, qu'il n'avait pu vous le faire parvenir, ignorant votre adresse, mais qu'il se tenait a votre disposition’ (Translation: ‘Mlle. Juillerat kindly changed her mind from informing you that Amaury Duval had promised to send you immediately the copy of the Russian fables which you have the right to claim and the sending of which had only been delayed by mistake or by forgetfulness. It turns out that either one or the other didn’t happen. I learned yesterday from Alexandre Duval that the copy in question had been given to him by his brother, from the moment of its publication, that he had not been able to send it to you, being ignorant of your address, but that he was at your disposal’), further adding that Juillerat could collect the book himself from Duval’s home at Rue de Rohan. [PRIZE OF WAR] : An interesting manuscript document, six pages, folio, Burgos, Spain, 11th August 1808, addressed to Marshal Bessieres, in French. The document comprises four pages listing the silverware units taken from the belongings of the chiefs of the insurgents as prize of war. The introductory letter signed states `J´ai l´honneur de rendre compte à Votre Excellence par les états ci-joints, de l´opération relative aux prises faites à Palencia sur les chefs des insurgés…´ (Translation: `I have the honor to report to Your Excellency through the attached statements, the operation relating to the captures made in Palencia of the leaders of the insurgents´) The pages describing the silverware are divided in three groups, `Argenterie d´Eglise – Argenterie de tables – Argenterie à l´usage de la chambre´ (Translation `Church silverware – Table silverware – Room silverware´), the lists including multiple items such as `Un calice doré – un tableau représentant la vierge – un bénitier…. Deux soupières, elles sont à double fond et ont des couvercles, 25 plats d´argent, 148 couteaux à manche d´argent… une montre d´argent, 11 paires de boucles d´oreilles, 2 crachoirs…´ (Translation: `A golden chalice – a painting representing the virgin – a holy water font…. Two soup tureens, they have double base and have lids, 25 silver dishes, 148 silver-handled knives... a silver watch, 11 pairs of earrings, 2 spittoons…´) An interesting and cleanly written document showing the reported prize of war during the Peninsular wars. Signed by Martial Daru (1774-1827) Quartermaster of the Imperial Guards in Spain. Very small minor age wear with uneven left edge as a result of its former light binding. G to VG Jean-Baptiste Bessieres (1768-1813) Marshal of France, Duc d´Istria. Killed in the battle field in Rippach, the day before the battle of Lutzen.With the outbreak of the Peninsular War in 1808, the year of the present document, Bessières had his first opportunity at independent command. He did well against the Spanish, scoring a crushing victory in the Battle of Medina del Rio Seco, but apparently proved slow and hesitant in command of a large force. Bessieres was thus soon recalled to lead the Guard Cavalry during Napoleon's invasion of Spain.

An excellent D.S., `Joseph Prince Poniatowski´, one page, large folio, 11.5 x 18.5 (29.5cm x 46cm), Warsaw, 1th August 1808, in Polish. Poniatowski, in his capacity as Minister of war, appoints an infantry officer. The partially printed document bears a large printed coat of arms to the heading, with the printed text heading “Frederick August – By God´s grace, King of Saxony, Duchy and Warsaw, etc.. – Polish Army – Duchy of Warsaw”. The title appoints Tadeusz Wolinski as Major of the First Infantry regiment. Signed by Poniatowski at the base, the first two words with light ink. Overall age wear and foxing, although fully legible. Professionally repaired to the verso to edges. About G

EINSTEIN ALBERT: (1879-1955) German-born theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. A good A.L.S., Einstein, to one side of a plain postcard, n.p. (Zurich), n.d. (19th August 1910), to Dr. Ludwig Hopf, in German. Einstein writes both a scientific and social letter to his assistant, collaborator and fellow lover of music, making reference to a dispute with another physicist over the rigid bodies in the theory of relativity. Einstein informs Hopf that his wife and their newborn son are ‘still not doing as expected’ so they have ceased their musical evenings until further notice, remarking ‘This also makes me homebound. If you come to see me, I am always happy’ and further writing ‘With Ignatowsky it is indeed as you suspected. He draws conclusions that contradict mine and wants my signature on them. But I have already sent him home and am currently busy with a remark about the rigid body that is destined for the annals, in which I am trying to clarify the situation through a very elementary consideration. If you come, I’ll show you this rather amusing thing’. Hand addressed by Einstein to the verso. A letter of good content and association. One heavy crease to the lower part of the letter, not affecting the text or signature, G Ludwig Hopf (1884-1939) German-Jewish theoretical physicist. Early in his career, in 1909, Hopf was hired by Einstein as his assistant at the University of Zurich and the two scientists became collaborators and co-authors. Their friendship was helped by the fact that both were music lovers and often played duets, Hopf being a talented pianist and Einstein a violinist. Vladimir Ignatowski (1875-1942) Russian physicist who wrote some papers on special relativity and in 1910 was the first to try to derive the Lorentz transformation by group theory only using the relativity principle and without the postulate of the constancy of the speed of light. Einstein’s first wife, the Serbian physicist and mathematician Mileva Maric (1875-1948), had given birth to their second son, Eduard ‘Tete’ Einstein, on 28th July 1910. At the age of 21 Eduard was diagnosed with schizophrenia and after his father’s emigration to the United States the two never saw each other again.

An excellent and lengthy A.L.S., `Giacomo Casanova´, with his full name, three pages, 4to, Dux, 11th January 1790, to Count Antonio Collalto ('Your Excellency, my Beloved Patron'), in Italian. Casanova thanks his correspondent for his letter which he has just received and states in part `.. especially interesting seems to me the election of Counselor to your Excellency of Count Odoardo, your dignified son. An appointment which grants a noble and wise member to the senate.´ Casanova further refers to Prince Ruspoli and makes an amusing comment `…considering that Bacchus and Mars have never been my favourite divinities..´ Further again, Casanova mentions a new he has received related to Mirabeau, and expresses his contempt for the French author, stating `I have received today the news that the bestial Mirabeau, chief of the rebels assassins who dethroned the Christian King, is dead as a result of the wounds received on a duel. This death distresses me because I had the hope of meeting him somewhere, kill him and watch him die. He is an infamous writer who has dishonoured crowned heads and famous writers, and among them our illustrious Abbot Boskovitch who he treats as an ignorant.´ Before concluding, Casanova comments on the Emperor´s health stating `I wish that His Majesty the Emperor and King will recover his lost health and that he will enjoy it for long without having any further troubles, surrounded by his loyal servitors, listening to the good advices he receives from the wise people who abound in his court.´ Some very light overall age wear and very small stain to the third page edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise about VG Count Antonio Collalto - Italian Nobleman and Military officer. Boscovich made multiple contributions to astronomy. He discovered the absence of atmosphere on the moon in 1753.Joseph II (1741-1790) Holy Roman Emperor 1765-90. Napoleon signs to the left border of the letter, beneath an annotation forwarding his order stating `Renvoyé au Maréchal Duc d´Istrie, pour m´en rendre compte´ (Translation “Sent back to Marshal duke d´Istria to report back to me”), the letter being a hand written demand addressed to the Emperor and sent by Second Lieutenant Ricaumont, officer of the 24th Regiment. Ricaumont humbly requests from His Majesty being appointed Second Lietenant in the Emperor´s personal Garde, stating in part `Je suis sans appui; vous êtes le père du soldat, je n´ai d´autre titre. Pour espérer que votre Majesté voudra bien satisfaire mon ardant désir. Je suis enrolé volontaire, je sers depuis dix ans, j´ai fait toutes les campagnes depuis cette époque; j´ai été blessé deux fois, par des coups de feu, notament à la Bataille d´Esling. Votre Majesté passant près de moi j´ai fixé Son attention, en criant Vive l´Empereur, je vous admire Sire, et vous n´avez pas de sujet plus dévoué que moi…´ (Translation: “I am without support; you are the father of the soldier, I have no other title. KAFKA FRANZ: (1883-1924) Austro-Hungarian-born Czechoslovakian novelist and short-story writer. An extremely rare A.L.S., with his initial K, as is usually encountered, three pages, 8vo, n.p. (Prague), n.d. (1921/22), to Robert [Klopstock], in German. Kafka writes in bold pencil and informs his friend that he had been at Munzer’s with Felix the previous evening, remarking ‘The result is small compared to the hopes: a free place in the cafeteria, which gives the right to daily (supposedly very good…..) lunch and dinner and also about 150K per month from an American association. That’s all, maybe something else will happen when you’re here, but for now only the two things above are certain’, and adding that he had heard that qualified doctors had been happy with similar accommodation. Kafka also reports that Munzer was very friendly, thanks to Felix, and explains that he will make further enquiries to find somewhere for Klopstock to live, but that the summer semester will be starting soon. Kafka also makes reference to medical matters, stating ‘The visit to Munzer was even bleaker from a medical perspective……Their ignorance became terribly clear in the conversation……I’ll tell you about it later. I have been suffering from insomnia and its consequences for some time’. Autograph letters of Kafka are highly desirable and extremely rare as a result of his tragically untimely death at the age of 40, having suffered from laryngeal tuberculosis. Some minor age wear, two very minor, light stains to the right edge of the final page, and a few of the edges slightly irregularly torn, not affecting the text or signature, G Robert Klopstock (1899-1972) Hungarian physician and lung surgeon, a close friend of Franz Kafka from 1920-24. Both Klopstock and Kafka were treated for tuberculosis and the former was present at the writer’s death bed at the Kierling Sanatorium in Vienna on 3rd June 1924. COSTA LUCIO: (1902-1998) Brazilian architect and urban planner. Two fine original black pen, ink and coloured pencil drawings by Costa, both signed with his initials (‘LC’), each one page, 4to, n.p. (Ouro Preto), n.d., on the printed stationery of the Ministerio da Educacao e Cultura. Costa has carefully executed two detailed drawings of the columns and decorative features within the Rococo Catholic Church of Saint Francis of Assisi in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The drawings are numbered 1 and 2 by Costa, further annotating them Minas (Bresil) and with the dates 1730-50 and 1770-90 in his hand. An excellent and attractive pair of studies by Costa. A couple of very minor, light stains, a few creases and one small area of paper loss to the upper right corner of the second sheet, otherwise VG, 2The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi was designed by the Brazilian architect and sculptor Antonio Francisco Lisboa (Aleijadinho) and its erection commenced in 1766. Lisboa was responsible for both the structure of the church and the ornately carved decorations of the interior, which were only completed towards the end of the 19th century. The interior is lavishly decorated with golden woodwork, statues and paintings, some of which are represented in Costa’s drawings. Owing to its architecture and historical significance, the church is classified on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is also one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World.

The composer thanks his correspondent for their kind note and invitation, remarking ‘you know how very happy I shall be to accept it & to talk over some of our Italian recollections with you & Mrs. Smith & to see your situation of which Mr. Attwood talks with delight’ and further explaining that he is engaged almost every day of the following week ‘but as I am going to Norwood at the end of next week I hope you will allow me then to pay you a visit when I shall be most happy to see you again and in good health & shall pay you my thanks for the kindnesses you showed me whenever we met in Venice, Florence & Rome’. With address leaf in Mendelssohn’s hand (neatly detached from the bifolium and with the very small remnants of the red wax seal and a few neat tears). FLAUBERT GUSTAVE: (1821-1880) French novelist. A significant autograph manuscript, unsigned, three pages, folio, n.p., n.d. (c.1857), in French. Flaubert's extensive manuscript notes are entitled Un repas de noces - Lettre d'Hyppolochus a Lincée ('A wedding meal - Letter from Hyppolochus to Lincée') and were prepared by the novelist as research notes for chapter one ('The Feast') of his historical novel Salammbo. The text states, in part, (translated) 'Caranus making a nuptial feast in Macedonia invited twenty parasites there. As soon as they were seated at table each of them was given a bottle of silver. They had each received before entering the room a gold band estimated at five gold Ecus….. For us happy for the rest of our days, with what we took from the feast of Caranus, we seek goods, country houses, slaves to buy, with the presents with which he has showered us'. Rare in this form. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Hippolochus was a Macedonian writer and student of Theophrastus, who addressed in a letter to his fellow student Lynceus of Samos a description of a wedding feast in Macedon in the early 3rd century BC. The bridegroom was a certain Caranus, most likely a relative of the Caranus who had been a companion of Alexander the Great. Flaubert's Salammbo is a historical novel which was published in 1862. Enormously popular in its day, the novel opens with a feast to celebrate the victory of the battle of Eryx, won against Rome, and was praised for its style and story. Provenance: It is believed that the present manuscript was originally included with a series of other research notes made by Flaubert, totaling some 26 pages, and entitled Letters of Alciphron. As well as including extracts relating to a wedding feast, the manuscript also featured observations relating to courtesans and the manners of the people of Greece (see Les Amis de Flaubert, bulletin 12, 1958).

BELLMER HANS: (1902-1975) German Surrealist artist and photographer. A good A.L.S., with his initial H, one page, 4to, Castres, 12th March 1946, to [Joe Bousquet] (‘Mon tres cher ami’), in French. Bellmer states that he has not heard from his friend since returning to Castres, observing ‘C'est peut-etre de ma faute: comment repondre a mes lettres de desarroi et de desespoir?’ (Translation: ‘It may be my fault: how to respond to my letters of dismay and despair?’) and continues ‘J'ai retrouve un peu mon equilibre, ayant reussi a forcer mon epouse de me rendre les objets et les documents voles etc…… Tout cela est plus odieux que j'aurais jamais pu le croire: l'imagination ignore ce plan. Il faut etre concierge, flic, canaille pour y nager sans consternation’ (Translation: ‘I regained my balance a little, having succeeded in forcing my wife to give me back the stolen objects and documents etc……All this is more odious than I could ever have believed: the imagination ignores this plan. BHATNAGAR SHANTI SWAROOP: (1894-1955) Indian colloid chemist, academic and scientific administrator, revered as the ‘father of research laboratories’ in India. Typed D.S., S. S. Bhatnagar, one page, folio, New Delhi, India, August 1946. Bhatnagar responds to a researcher’s questionnaire entitled World Inquiry, with their manuscript questions at the head of the page, ‘1. Were your scientific “debut” easy or difficult? 2. Did means of living……enable you to make yourself known in science? Or did you live solely through your work of laboratory? 3. What work (or what discovery) made yourself more famous? Which do you consider as your master-piece?’ Bhatnagar provides his answers beneath, in part, ‘(1st) I consider it has been difficult, largely because I had to earn my living and spend a great deal of time on routine and administrative work……(2nd) No, I had no private income……(3rd) My work on emulsions and emulsification carried out in Lahore attracted considerable attention. My work on applications of physical chemistry to petroleum problems for Messrs. Steel Brothers……added to my reputation, but I think it is generally recognised that my work on Magnetochemistry and my book on Physical Principles and Applications of Magnetochemistry……in 1935 are perhaps my best contributions to science’. COLETTE: (1873-1954) French author, best known for her novella Gigi (1944). Autograph Manuscript signed, Colette, three pages (separate leaves), 4to, n.p., n.d., in French. The working manuscript, with various deletions and corrections, is entitled Perruche bleue ('Blue Parakeet') and is the story of a lady who has lost her dog and whose husband, to console his wife, buys her a blue parakeet, in part, 'Je ne veux pas un chien, je veux un bouledogue; un bouledogue avec un oeil ici et un oeil la, tres loin l'un de l'autre; avec un front de penseur, pas de nez ou si peu, le cou bien epais......enfin un bouledogue!......son mari partit pour Paris......Il posa son colis et deboucla l'enveloppe de toile. Sous un rayon de soleil apparut, debout sur un barreau de la cage, une perruche bleue....' (Translation: 'I don't want a dog, I want a bulldog; a bulldog with one eye here and one eye there, very far apart; with a thinker's forehead, no or very little nose, a very thick neck…..finally a bulldog!......Her husband left for Paris…..He put down his package and unbuckled the canvas envelope. FREDERICK DUKE OF YORK: (1763-1827) British Prince and Field Marshal, son of King George III. Commander-in-Chief of the British Army 1795-1809, 1811-27. A good A.L.S., Frederick, one page, 4to, Headquarters at Beveren, 12th April 1793, to an unidentified Lord. The Duke takes ‘the opportunity of the Dutch messenger returning with the mail for England’ to thank his correspondent for their obliging letters and further remarks ‘I am perfectly of your opinion that if we had not persuaded the Prince of Coburg to publish his second declaration, the bad advice which he had received would have done a prodigious deal of mischief’. The Duke also informs his correspondent of his plans ‘I mean to march from hence tomorrow morning to Lokeren and the next day to Ghent when I shall help the 15th’. Some light age wear and a few minor traces of former mounting to the verso, about VG Prince Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1737-1815) Austrian nobleman and military General who commanded the army in the Austrian Netherlands in 1793-94 during the Flanders Campaign. His victory in the French Revolutionary Wars at Neerwinden in March 1793 led to the region returning to Austrian control. In 1793 Prince Frederick was sent to Flanders and placed in command of the British contingent of Coburg’s army destined for the invasion of France. The Prince and his soldiers fought in the Flanders Campaign under very adverse conditions although won several notable engagements including the Siege of Valenciennes in July 1793.
