A 19th Century Duvelleroy Fan for The Paris Exhibition of 1889, marked ''Duvelleroy 1889'' recto/verso, a double fabric leaf mounted on a plain light coloured wood frame. The recto shows magnificent buildings around the Champ de Mars. This is the most famous of the Paris Trade exhibitions as it was held to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the storming of the bastille and is best known for giving Paris the Eiffel Tower, the then tallest building in the world. Pastel colours mainly a pale sea green emphasis in black, some colour to the clothing worn by visitors. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28cm; A Chinese Commemorative Fan, depicting the Japanese Prince Fushimi, Chief of Staff of the Japanese Navy in the 1930's, General Yamamoto, who also held high rank in the Navy, and General Nishi, a Japanese Army officer. Double paper leaf mounted on simple wooden sticks painted in silver. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm; and A Small Wood Fan, gilded, the single gauze leaf dated 1911, initialled ERM, with a central depiction of the Lion and Unicorn and the motto ''Dieu et Mon droit'', this being the motto of the Monarch of the United Kingdom outside Scotland, reputedly first used by Richard l as a battle cry and as a reference to his French Ancestry and the divine right of the Monarch to govern. Guard length 7.25 inches or 18cm (3)Fan 1 - Generally good. Fan 2 - The leaf is peppered with miniscule holes but sound. Fan 3 - Some splitting to the folds to the right.

France, 1787, A Printed Fan, with double leaf mounted on carved bone sticks, the upper guards lightly painted, the recto featuring a central hand coloured depiction of the King holding court with the clergy and nobility to either side, the reserves with six satirical verses to be sung to the tune of the Aire Du Vaudeville de Figaro. The verso is plain. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm Exhibited at the Fan Makers hall (Worshipful Company of Fan Makers) on the 4-5 December 1980, the collection shown belonging to the Great-Grandson of Lady Charlotte Schreiber. Cat. Number 26A fairly crude and simple monture which has warped very slightly. The verso is quite dirty and shows evidence of old repairs. The recto has light brown staining mainly to the sides. Rubbing to the folds. Good strong colour to the central cartouche.

A Large Early 20th Century Bone Fan, mounted with eau de nil silk and backed with gauze of a similar colour. Of balloon form, the leaf is embroidered with silver sequins of different shapes and sizes, in the design of swags and bows. The monture is lightly carved, pierced and gilded. Height to top centre when closed is approx 13.5 inches or 34.5cm; and An Early 20th Century Fan of Fontange Shape, the monture of light wood painted gold, the fine gauze leaf painted with a design of autumnal leaves, mainly in gold, with four small birds with fluffy chest feathers and inquisitive expressions in the central panel below. Height to top centre when closed is approx. 14 inches or 36cm (2)Fan 1 - One central gorge stick is detached from the rib. At this point the silk has been damaged to the lower edge of the leaf. At some point the fan has been pinned to something, a pin hole is evident to the top right side and to the left side there is also rust where the shape of a drawing pin can be seen. Fan 2 - The gauze is split in several places, and the top edge has losses. No signature noted.

Napoleonic Warfare: Circa 1880's Fan, the green/pink mother-of-pearl sticks mounted with a double velum leaf, depicting centrally a battle scene, with Napoleon's troops wearing the distinctive shako on their heads, charging an artillery battery, swords drawn, the officer to the right of the canon wearing the Légion d'honneur, the wounded lying around, and bearing a signature ''Luck''. The offensive could be against Prussia, Russia or Austria? To the left of the central cartouche, a French Light Infantry soldier in ornate uniform, to the right an officer of the 1st Empire Grenadiers, bearing a standard, wearing the characteristic headwear with the Imperial Eagle (the emblem chosen by Napoleon in 1804). The monture is silvered and gilded featuring sabres, headwear, guns, as does the upper guard. The verso is plain. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cmGood. Bright and clean.

An Early 20th Century Handmade Brussels Bobbin Lace Fan, mounted on light pink mother of pearl sticks, the monture plain. The fan is finished with a knotted and fringed cream silk tassel. Guard length 10 inches or 25cm. Together with a wooden fan box, covered in gold, blue and silver coloured paper, labelled inside the slightly domed lid ''J Duvelleroy 167 Regent Street, London W''; and A Late 19th Century Gilded Wooden Fan, the monture carved and pierced and with sticks continuing up onto the leaf à la Sultane. The single leaf is formed from bands of cream silk alternating with machine insertion lace, the top border being wider and finished with a shaped edge. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm (2)Fan 1 - In good order, very very slight discoloration to the lace. The box has no fastening nor seems to ever have had. Fan 2 - Generally sound albeit a bit soiled. The gilding is rubbed in places. The ribbon on the verso has losses (second layer) and is detached at one end on the bottom border.

A Rare 18th Century Printed Fan Entitled ''The General Idea of Sciences''. The double paper leaf is mounted on plain wood, the gorge sticks a light wood, the guards dyed slightly darker and the upper guards painted in colour, most likely a later addition. The fan covers instruction on the following subjects, spelt here as printed: Human learning; Philosophy: Logick; Morality; Metaphysicks; Physicks; Medecine and Surgery; Pharmacy; Chymistry; Astronomy; The Sphere; Architecture; Drawing; Geometry; Heraldry; Politics; Enginry; Naval; Horsemanship; Agriculture; Economy. A border of leaves, bows and flowers runs along the top edge of the leaf. To the side of each subject are drawings representing the subject, such as a horse, a telescope, books, medical equipment, a sailing ship, a globe, and farming tools. The verso is plain. T/W a period pink card fan tube, with ink annotations which are indecipherable. Not in the Schreiber collection. Guard length approx. 10 inches or 26cmOther than the later paint decorating the upper guards, the fan is in good order and retains good colour. The verso is marked with black, which does not come through to the recto. Very light staining can be seen on the recto from the left for approximately the first two folds.

A Regency Printed and Hand-Coloured Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on basic and plain dark wooden sticks. The recto depicts a lady wearing early 19th century dress reading a letter which has either been just delivered by, or indeed written by, a young man in breeches, boots and buttoned waistcoat of the period. The scene is bordered with a classical leaf design. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 8.5 inches or 21.5cm; and A Late 18th/Early 19th Century Printed and Hand-Coloured Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on basic wooden sticks, plain and light to the gorge, plain and dyed dark brown and polished for the guards, with bone thumb guards. The main body of the recto depicts a rocky countryside clearing with tall trees and unusual bushes, mountains in the distance and possibly rural Italian buildings to the bottom left. Centrally, country people take refreshment, one petting a dog. Above and surrounding the scene are 2 borders, one in pale yellow featuring birds attempting to prey upon large insects and snails. The upper border, in cream, has a simple leaf design. To the lower border a very thin pink panel is printed with ''gravé par J B D????on''. Guard length approx. 9.75 inches or 25cm (2)Fan 1 - Very good. One very minor loss to the lower edge of the leaf and some slight marks on the verso, plus at top border level and seen from the right side of the verso, some very very slight staining. Fan 2 - Very good.

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved, pierced and painted, the carving creating interest when the fan is laid closed on its side. The gorge is carved in bands which feature differing decoration, with tiny butterflies and flowers picked out in colour. The double paper leaf, in Chinoiserie style, depicts figures at leisure, two men in the centre with long stemmed pipes, stylised buildings and gardens behind, the reserves with other robed figures, flowers and fruit, and insects, details picked out in gold. The verso is simply painted with flowers. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm Exhibited at Marble Hill House, Twickenham near London in 2006From the verso, multiple repairs to the folds are visible, and some very light soiling.

A Late 18th/Early 19th Century Printed Fan, ''New Country Dances'', the double paper leaf mounted on light coloured and unpolished wood sticks. The recto, bordered in pale pink, is printed with'' Eighteen of the most Favourite New Country dances'', with directions for the steps, and musical scores. Dances include ''Whim of the Moment'' and Kifs me Sweetly''. The verso is printed with a simple design of musical instruments. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Together with an 18th century card fan tube in mottled green and orangeSome nicks to the tips of the folds. One stick to the left has split slightly and been glued. Slight damage to the leaf to the left near the bottom edge.

A Circa 1840's Chinese Carved Tortoiseshell Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, with 19 inner sticks and two guards. The sticks are carved on both sides, the guards more deeply. A central oval with rope effect border contains small figures, a building and foliage. Below this an elder appears to be welcoming a visitor on horseback. Further groups of quite large scale figures fill the remainder of the fan, with several buildings, and stylised trees filling any remaining space. A classically carved border divides this carving from the tips, each of which features a figure, some wearing robes, each undertaking different activities. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cmGenerally very good, one central stick has a small loss to the tip, and two others have small slivers missing Very slight nibbles to side edges. Not examined under UV light. Contained in a non-period card box. New ribbon required.

A Fine Fan by Alexandre, circa 1880, believed to have belonged to the Infanta Maria de la Paz (1862-1948), daughter of Queen Isabella II of Spain and her husband Francisco. In 1880 The Infanta married her first cousin, Prince Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria, a member of the Bavarian Royal House of Wittelsbach and a General of Cavalry. Following the marriage, the couple lived outside Munich in the Nymphenburg Palace. The couple visited Paris on their way to Munich which presents the possibility of the fan being purchased then. The double velum leaf, painted with a charming and amusing scene of a wealthy couple in fine costume taking tea in the garden, the lady reading a letter, younger family members noting that the gentleman is snoozing and tickling him with a flower to rouse him from slumber. A further group of adults, possibly including clergy, are in discussion to the side. A stream and woodland next to a fine country house complete the scene. Signed M de Garay in red on the recto, bottom left, the leaf is mounted on carved and pierced blond tortoiseshell sticks. The upper guard has a panel left plain for a monogram. The verso is painted with PAZ underneath a coronet and is inscribed ''Alexandre'' to the left border. Guard length 11.75 inches or 30cm. Together with a lilac silk covered hinged fan box, lined with lilac, the interior of the lid stamped with a scrolling design in gold that could contain the word ''éventail'' and perhaps more, but is hard to distinguish Provenance: Lot 774 in Sotheby's sale in Amsterdam entitled ''Of Noble and Royal Descent ...'', held on 18th-20th February, achieving a hammer price of 3317,00 eurosSuperb detail to the costumes including the quilting to the petticoat worn by the lady to the left. Light wear to the folds. Some brown staining to the verso. The exterior silk of the box has faded in comparison to the strong interior colour

A Large Circa 1890's Black Gauze Fan, mounted à l'Anglaise on black wooden sticks, the upper border edged with a fine narrow black bobbin lace. The guards and gorge are clouté with silver metal dots and feature lightly carved flowers which are painted in soft blue and gold. The leaf is painted in shades of soft blue and turquoise, and embroidered with tiny gold and blue sequins. Musical instruments feature in the centre and side vignettes, along with two charming scenes of a figure in Pierrot costume playing music to his lady. The verso is undecorated. Guard length 13 inches or 33cm plus lace. Contained in a cream silk covered card fan box with domed lid, a label for J Duvelleroy 167 regent Street London fixed to the lid interior; A Dainty Circa 1900 Cream Gauze Fan, of scalloped balloon form, mounted on carved, pierced and silvered bone sticks. The silk leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is embroidered with silver sequins of various sizes and forms, and swags of tambour work in metal threads. Guard length 6.75 inches or 16cm, overall height as leaf protrudes, 8.25 inches or 21cm; and A 1920's Chinese Wood And Paper Tourist Fan, with brightly coloured leaf (3)Black fan: Generally good: two inner sticks/ribs are detached as the rivet is missing, the sticks consequently all loose (all present). Cream fan, some light foxing to the silk and next to the upper guard the silk is just starting to split. Sequins bright and shiny.

A First Half 18th Century Fan, the carved and pierced ivory sticks also painted and decorated with mother-of-pearl, the gorge elaborately so. The head is unusually flat at the very tip. The velum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, depicts a nursemaid in the park carrying one small girl whilst supervising an older child playing with a miniature horse on wheels. A vignette to the right shows a galleon on the sea near to port, and to the left a boy ascends a ladder in order to pick fruit for a lady waiting with her basket. The scenes are bordered with delicate and colourful flowers. The verso is painted with a ship on the seas passing a rock on which flows a fountain. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cmGood. Light rubbing to the folds.

The Triumph of Venus: A Circa 1880 Fan, with double velum leaf, mounted on pierced and gilded, slightly green/ pink mother-of-pearl sticks, the recto painted with a vibrant depiction of Venus with a nereid drawing her chariot into the shore, her attendant and Cupid accompanied by other cherubs playing music and carrying a flower garland. Signed A. Topart. The verso is plain save for light borders painted in gold, and signed Duvelleroy to the bottom left edge of the leaf. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm Possibly Antonin Pierre Topart (b. Paris 1833) who was a portrait and history painter in oils and enamels. He exhibited at The Salon from 1864 to 1882. His daughter Louise is known to have exhibited fans.The monture is clean, bright, shiny and strong. Slight rubbing to the folds but the recto retains attractive colour.

A 1740's Ivory Fan, the monture beautifully carved and pierced, mother-of-pearl thumb guards to both guards, themselves carved with Chinese figures and buildings. The double paper leaf, in the Chinoiserie style, depicting both European and Oriental figures, is sprinkled with crushed mother-of-pearl and bears the attribution to M Gamble According to the Late Act 1740, at the bottom left of the recto. From the left, a European scene of ruins with a man of import seated next to a stream. The central scene shows an oriental figure holding a large decorated fixed fan, and the final scene shows an oriental family gathering where a game is being played. The verso has a simple depiction of a figure with blackened face. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cmSome light soling to the cream background, slight loss to the paper on the bottom border, some nicks to the upper folds and small areas of period restoration to the verso.
