Charles Lyell popularised the doctrine of uniformitarianism, first suggested by James Hutton, which presumes that the same natural laws and processes that operate in the universe now, have always operated in the past and apply everywhere in the universe. The central argument in Principles, and one that had a notable influence on the young Charles Darwin, was that 'the present is the key to the past' and that geological remains from a distant past can be explained by reference to observable geological processes now in operation. Jewitt was an armourer aboard the Boston, which arrived in Nootka Sound in 1803, and he apparently along with one other crewman (despite the title stating he was the lone survivor) survived and spent three years in captivity there before being rescued in 1805. A group of 7 land documents and plans, 1801-1878, including 3 manuscript conveyances for '348 Acres of Land parce of Lot No. 49, late belonging to Joseph Aplin Esquire, Prince Edward Island', from John Webster to Peter Macgowan, 1801, the second dated 1802 between Peter Macgowan, Ann Macgowan, and Allan Cummen, farmer, and the third dated 1818 between Richard Edwards and James MacBraire, plus a copy of the Chancery Decree relating to the same estate dated 1818, a copy of the deed to the estate dated 1878, and 2 contemporary manuscript plans of the estate dated 1830 and 1831 respectively, all on paper, folded (except the third conveyance on vellum), a few tears to folds without loss, some light external soiling, the 2 plans each measuring 40 x 32 cm (15.75 x 12.5 ins) Peter Macgowan was Attorney General on Prince Edward Island at this time, and John Webster was Deputy Sheriff. The plans show the farm house, fields and woodland between Pownal Bay and the road leading from Charlote Town to George Town.
