Harold Riley (British, born 1934)Old Trafford at Dusk in Winter, After a Light Snowfall signed 'Riley' (lower right)oil over printed photograph on linen, laid on board24 x 49cm (9 7/16 x 19 5/16in).Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, from whom acquired directly by the present owner, circa 1967, and thence by descentPrivate Collection, U.K.Harold Riley dates this painting to circa 1967 and states this is one of a small number of similar works he painted at this time. After his studies at The Slade and The Courtauld Institute in London, Riley returned to his native Salford with a determination to record its people, life, workplaces, streets, houses and entertainments. He did this in drawings, paintings, photography and prints, and created a record of the city. Riley was a very talented football player, and has a long standing association with Manchester United Football Club, as well as painting many other professional sports. In conversation Harold Riley described the method he used in this painting. At his home he had a darkroom, where he developed and printed his black and white photographs. In this artwork he printed a composite of two photographs onto the linen, which he had previously coated with photographic chemicals. The images were quite lightly printed. He then extensively painted and re-worked the photographic image using thinned oil paint, arranging the composition as work on the painting progressed. We are grateful to Harold Riley for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
