T.L.S., Samuel Curran, one page, 4to, George Street, Glasgow, 1st November 1973, to Mr. A. Nelson Taylor, on the printed stationery of the University of Strathclyde. Curran states that it was kind of his correspondent to have written after having read one of Curran's publications ('only I am not quite sure which you have read and it would interest me a great deal to know this') and further remarks 'It is always encouraging to hear from someone like yourself and I thank you very much indeed for your best wishes'. SCOTT WALTER: (1771-1832) Scottish historical novelist, poet, playwright and historian. A.L.S., Walter Scott, one page, 8vo, Abbotsford, 14th September n.y. ('Four o'clock'), to Charles Auguste Defauconpret. Scott states that he will have great pleasure in receiving his correspondent and Madame Fauconpret for dinner at Abbotsford at 5.30pm, and further remarks 'My daughter who was indisposed at the time of my writing is now much better and will be happy to see Madame Fauconpret. We can give you a comfortable bed & beg you will make your arrangements accordingly'. In a postscript Scott also writes 'Do not take trouble in dressing'. ROSTROPOVICH MSTISLAV: (1927-2007) Russian cellist and conductor. A printed 4to souvenir programme for Cinq Operas Russes ('Five Russian Operas') performed with the soloists, choirs, orchestra, staging, sets and costumes of the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow at the Paris Opera in 1970, signed and inscribed in Cyrillic by Rostropovich to an inside page featuring his image and printed text, 'To a dear artist and person - a wonderful friend - Sasha, with great love and hope for our endless friendship, from loving Slava', and again signed beneath with his full signature and dated 1970 in his hand. Together with an oblong 8vo folding Christmas and New Year greetings card individually signed ('Slava') by Rostropovich, his wife the Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya (who adds a lengthy inscription in Cyrillic) and their two children, the pianist Elena, and Olga. The binding of the programme and many of the inside pages (including that signed by Rostropovich) is loose and with some light age wear and creasing to the covers. G to VG, 2Provenance: The programme was signed for the opera singer Alexander Ognivtsev who, in 1970, appeared in a production of Eugene Onegin, in the role of Gremin. Rostropovich conducted the opera, which also featured Vishnevskaya in the role of Tatyana.

DULEEP SINGH FREDERICK: (1868-1926) Crown Prince of Punjab, son of Sir Duleep Singh, the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. A.L.S., Duleep Singh, four pages, 8vo, Elveden Hall, Thetford, Suffolk, 2nd December 1873, to Mr. Drewitt. The Prince writes regarding some properties, 'I understand that Eagles property is sold to a person who I believe is one of those people who buy estates to cut up and sell again and fearing he might also purchase Eva's I had a letter written to ascertain if the Glebe Farm was still for sale. I had a reply yesterday that it was and now I shall write again for fuller particulars', asking his correspondent if they could come and see him to talk the matter over, providing details of a hotel that he will be staying in ('on account of taking Turkish baths') although suggesting 'a line addressed to the Carlton will be best'. Some very light age wear and some very slight traces of former mounting to the right edge of the final page, not affecting the text or signature, VG

MELBOURNE VISCOUNT: (1779-1848) British Prime Minister 1834, 1835-41. A.L.S., Melbourne, two pages, 8vo, South Street (Mayfair, London), 3rd July 1836, to Lady Buckinghamshire. Melbourne states that he should have been most happy to comply with his correspondent's wishes 'but I am afraid that the place in question is already promised', further remarking that he received a letter from Charles (?) some days ago, 'just as they were about to land, by which I was glad to hear that they were all in good health & spirits'. LAENNEC RENE: (1781-1826) French physician who invented the stethoscope in 1816 and pioneered its use in diagnosing various chest conditions. A rare A.L.S., Laennec, two pages, small 4to, n.p., 12th January 1811, to his father ('Mon cher papa'), in French. Laennec acknowledges that he has received his father's latest letter and box, declaring 'Je vous fais mille remerciements, vous ne pouviez me faire un present plus agreable que celui la' (Translation: 'I give you a thousand thanks, you could not give me a more pleasant present than this one'), further adding that he will have a crucifix repaired and remarking 'Cela serait deja fait sans les occupations et les embarras ou je me trouve depuis trois semaines et qui m'ont empeche egalement de vous offrir plutot les voeux que je fais pour que cette nouvelle annee soit plus heureuse pour vous et par conseequent pour nous tous que celle qui vient de s'ecouler' (Translation: 'This would already have been done without the occupations and the discomfitures in which I have been for three weeks and which have also prevented me from offering you the wishes that I am making so that this New Year will be more happy for you and consequently for all of us than the one that has just passed'), and continuing to write 'Le principal de ces embarras est le depart prochain du Cardinal pour Rennes. Il m'a propose de m'emmener avec lui jusques la. Ce projet me plait beaucoup. Je serais fort aise d'aller voir un peu s'il n'y a pas moyen de faire finir promptement l'etat de gene dans lequel je me trouve et qui m'empeche de faire mes voeux ce que je desirerais. Mais mille raisons trop longues a deduire me retiennent ici. La plus forte est la difficulte d'arracher a ceux qui me doivent de quoi faire ce voyage. Si je puis lever celle la, je romprai toutes les autres entraves. Ainsi il n'est pas impossible que j'aye sous peu le plaisir de vous embrasser. I embrace you in this hope….for although I do not yet know if I will leave, I am making all my arrangements as if I were sure of it and I have no time to lose'). With address panel in Laennec's hand. Autograph letters of Laennec are rare as a result of his untimely death from tuberculosis at the age of 45. A couple of very light, small circular stains (caused by the original seal) only very slightly affecting a few words of text which remain perfectly legible, otherwise VGLaennec was intensely religious and was a devout Catholic all of his life, and has been described as a sincere Christian who adhered to his religion and was a man of the greatest probity, habitually observant of his religious and social duties; all qualities which are illustrated in the present letter.

EINSTEIN ALBERT: (1879-1955) German-born theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. T.L.S., A. Einstein, one page, 4to, Mercer Street, Princeton, New Jersey, 25th February 1942, to Hermann Broch, in German. Einstein states that he has read Broch's manuscript with great interest, remarking 'I really believe that your method brings the important subject closer to understanding' and concluding 'I will be pleased if I am given the opportunity to be of use to you through my judgement'. A letter of interesting association. One small, light stain to the upper edge and some very light creasing and a couple of extremely small, minimal tears to the edges, VGHermann Broch (1886-1951) Austrian writer, remembered for two works of modernist fiction, The Sleepwalkers (1930-32) and The Death of Virgil (1945). From August to September 1939 Broch had resided in Einstein's Mercer Street home while the physicist and his wife were on vacation.

WILSON ANGUS: (1913-1991) English novelist and short story writer. A small correspondence collection comprising an A.L.S. and two T.Ls.S., Angus Wilson, and one with his first name only, each one page, 8vo, Bradfield St. George, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, January 1959 - December 1965, all to Tom [Maschler]. Wilson declines an invitation and also sadly returns some theatre tickets 'as I have 3 plays that week' (24th January 1959), apologises for not recalling an earlier letter about The Window although thanks Maschler for sending a proof, 'I am snowed under with work at the moment, but I hope I can read the book soon' (14th July 1961), and in the final letter writing 'I thought you were very good on the Connolly programme, and yours was a helpful contribution - the decision to ask you and the method of presentation was, by the way, all decided by the producer, not by me' (11th December 1965). Some light creasing and minor age wear, G to VG, 3Tom Maschler (1933-2020) British publisher who, from 1960, was head of the publishing company Jonathan Cape for more than three decades. Maschler was also instrumental in establishing the Booker Prize in 1969.

Cezanne states that he has just received l'Avenir Artistique et littéraire which Solari had been kind enough to send to him, and continues to remark 'Votre père viendra manger du canard avec moi, dimanche prochain. Il sera aux olives, (Le canard bien entendu.) - Que ne pouvez-vous être des notres' (Translation: 'Your father is coming to eat duck with me next Sunday. It will be with olives, (the duck of course.) - Why can't you be one of us'), concluding by asking Solari to keep him in his good memory for the future. § § Montague Dawson (English, 1895-1973) 'Rough Weather'gouache on cardsigned43.5 x 63cmCondition:Somewhat neglected condition, the overall image has been cropped at the edges including the loss of part of his christian name to the signature, there is a pronounced scuffed scratch running diagonally near the lower left corner which also has a crease mark, further light scratching around the edges of the work which looks to be from it being loose in its frame, also some scuffing in the paint particularly near the lower left corner, otherwise perhaps looks a little dirty, a small tear crease near 3 o'clock on the right side, other small flaws elsewhere, colours remain bright, back of the card with a numeral inscription 4235 along with title in pencil, overall this has the appearance of being a work that may well have been painted for illustrative purposes, comes with a rather tatty carved giltwood frame.
