*Austin Moseley (1930-2013)'A walk in the fog'signed with initials l.r, oil on canvas board20 x 15.5cmAustin Moseley was born in Staffordshire in 1930 and lived his whole life in the West Midlands. His work shows his close connection with the small communities of the Black Country. There is a light-hearted affection to the characters in his paintings who are often shown in the early morning or late evening. His work can also be recognised by his use of paint applied thickly with a palette knife to add texture and a slight abstraction of the subject matter. In some places the ink has been applied a little thinly, leaving some small white specks of paper visible, although perhaps this is intentional. The frame is in good condition with the occasional light scratch and spot of dirt.

*Lucian Freud OM CH (1922-2011) 'Wanted, Portrait of Francis Bacon', 2001 poster printed in black and red 85 x 60cmIn 1988, Freud's portrait of Francis Bacon was stolen from a Lucian Freud retrospective at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Freud created a 'Wanted' poster featuring plain lettering, a black and white image of the stolen work and a generous reward. Only 2500 were printed and posted around Berlin in 2001. It is not known now how many survive. Following the interest in one in Sworders' October 2020 sale, we are pleased to offer another example.This lot is sold together with a copy of the press statement and page of the Daily Telegraph from the launch of the appeal on Friday 22 June 2001.*Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.Condition report: The work has been restored by a professional paper restorer. It has been unrolled, brown waterstains have been reduced as have other surface dents and very minor edge tears. The artwork has been lined onto Japanese paper with homemade wheatstarch paste to flatten & add strength. It needs to be kept flat & should eventually be mounted and framed with conservation materials.Foxing spots and light dirt.

Signs of retouching apparent, especially dots and dabs of green and blue in the background to cover damage, and to his shirt. The paint on the head also fluoresces although there are no obvious signs of damage to the head so this could be due to pigment or strengthening. Two patches verso, and a couple of further spots of repair to the canvas. Some surface dust and dirt. The paint is a little rubbed and flaking at extreme edges. A couple of light surface scratches. The central horizontal stretcher bar has left a light imprint in the canvas, visible from certain angles. A couple of small pinholes, top left corner.
