A Regulation Army Book Containing A Handwritten Account of Life During The Second Boer War in The King;s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, signed to the front endpaper by Corporal J W Harris and Pte F McVeagh, both G Company. The diary is started in the hand of Cpl Harris and begins with parade details in September 1899 before arriving at Orange River around 18th November, where they were welcomed by several other regiments including the Loyal North Lancashire. A few days later came the order that Lord Methuen would start the march to Kimberley on the 21st November, the artillery shelling the enemy occupied hills ahead. Harris goes on to detail further skirmishes and perilous marches (a few soldiers breaking legs) before McVeagh picks up the story during an account of the 25th November 1899. He writes until January of 1900 where they met the Highland Brigade near the Modder River. Entries become fewer and the account ends on the 11th April 1900.

DCM obverse lightly polished, war medals with light surface marks, EM in VF condition; Together with War Office M.I.D document, Warrant Officer certificate, photographs, Sergeants Mess presentation mantle clock, and the soldiers hand written and typescript account of his life, entitled "From Month To Month" and dedicated to his best friend during the Great War, Ian McCraig, who was K.I.A May 1918. *Jonathan Bower was born in 1889 and joined the army in 1905. He was posted with the 11th Hussars. Early life in the army was spent in India, where he met fellow signaler McCraig. His account details life on the North West frontier and he has drawn a naive map of patrol routes near the Himalayas. When war was declared in Europe, he was posted with 28th Battery RFA, and arrived in France in 1914. By October 1914 he was involved in skirmishes outside of Mons, and notes in his story that it was here he received his first citation `for laying telephone wire under heavy fire, for the support of the infantry`. After short respite, he rejoined the front at Rouban and Mons. It was here that a Lieutenant Brown and McCraig were wounded. Bower managed to lift Brown over the parapet and to safety. The personal account goes on to detail a tour in Mesopotamia and being presented with his DCM in June 1917 by HRH Duke of Connaught. 1918 saw them being subjected to gas attacks by the Germans and "both sides hanging on like grim death". In July 1918 he was wounded by Shrapnel and spent the remainder of the war in hospital. The final pages explain Bower`s posting at the anti aircraft battery at Middlewood and his life during WWII. A fascinating, detailed account that surely deserves publication.

Books – music – George Butterworth a scarce copy of the privately published biography of George Butterworth 1918. Bearing the signature of the composer and musical scholar Cyril Rootham ‘d.d. Sir A Kaye-Butterworth’ (George Butterworth’s father). An extremely rare book. We have not been able to trace another copy on the market at present. Butterworth was one of the greatest casualties of WWI. A brilliant composer who had already shown his considerable prowess with the orchestral works ‘A Shropshire Lad’ and ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ – both firm favourites in the concert repertoire today – he was destined to be one of the greatest British composers of the 20th c. He was killed on the Somme in September 1916 leading his man from the Durham Light Infantry in a trench which today is known as ‘The Butterworth Trench’. He has no known grave but his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme. The present volume was produced by his grieving family and comprises extracts from his diary letter both by him and to him and a series of appreciations by his friends – including a long passage written by Vaughan Williams who had dedicated his London Symphony to Butterworth.
