Inscribed “With best wishes from the author E. Sylvia Pankhurst”, owner's inscription “Doris Stott, June 2nd 1935, 131 Sandy Lane, Rochdale, additionaly inscribed “To mother from Ethel & Herbert, Sept 1932”. Sylvia Pankhurst, youngest daughter of Emmeline, joined the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) along with her mother and sister Christabel, but tensions and Sylvia's increasing socialist leanings led to her leaving the movement in 1913 and while the outbreak of the war led to Emmeline and Christabel patriotically suspending their activities, Sylvia thought the war only furthered capitalism and was a keen supporter of the Russian Revolution, forming the Workers' Socialist Federation in 1918.
