One seal.Provenance: Belgian trade.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, and firing flaws, light scratches to the base.Weight: 436.5 g Dimensions: Width 29 cmThe Hankou Ganxin Company was an offshoot of the Jiangxi Porcelain Company based in Hankou, Hubei province, one of three towns along with Wuchang and Hanyang that were merged in 1949 to become Hubei’s new capital Wuhan. The Jiangxi Porcelain Company (or Jiangxi Ciye Gongsi) is the most well-known Chinese porcelain studio of the first half of the 20th century, located in Jingdezhen. It was established in 1910 as a large semi-government company funded by private owners and the five provinces of Hebei, Hubei, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Jiangxi. It is located near the Zhushan – the Pearl Hill – adjacent to the former Imperial porcelain workshops. It is often said that the Jiangxi Porcelain Company of the early 20th century replaced the Imperial kilns, making porcelains for the court in the last years of the Qing Dynasty.Qianjiang is a term used to describe a type of over-glaze enameled ware that was very popular during the late Qing dynasty and early Republican period. The term Qianjiang cai (enamels) or Qianjiang porcelain was only coined in the 1950s. Prior to that, annals or commentaries in the late Qing and Republican periods did not classify it as a new distinctive type of over-glaze enamel decorative technique on porcelain. The term was initially used to describe a distinct style of landscape painting by the Yuan master Huang Gongwang. It is typified by the use of a particular color scheme: varying ink tones for outlines and reddish-brown for other aspects such as foliage, flowing water, mountain shades etc. The term was subsequently used to describe a porcelain painting style that used similar techniques but with additional colors such as aquamarine, moss green, pale blue, red and light pink. The relationship between qianjiang and fencai painting has caused quite a bit of confusion. In terms of the decorating medium, qianjiang utilizes fencai enamels. The main difference is actually the source of inspiration for the painting because the Qianjiang school draws its inspiration from the Chinese literati style, whereas the typical fencai work is more akin to gongbi painting. For fencai painting, the areas within the outlines of the motif are first applied with an arsenic-based opaque white pigment. The deeper and lighter tones are then obtained by mixing the enamels with different amounts of this opaque substance. For Qianjiang, the enamels are applied directly without the opaque white pigment. A COPPER-RED GLAZED ‘HAITANG’ VASE, QING DYNASTY, DAOGUANG PERIOD 道光銅紅釉海棠口瓶Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 1821-1850. The compressed baluster vase stands on a splayed foot. The four lobes of the vase give its characteristic crabapple shape as the neck rises from its globular body to an everted rim. The recessed base is glazed with a finely crackled guan-type glaze. Covered overall in a rich and absolutely opaque copper-red glaze.Provenance: Collection of Alfred Julius Forkel, and thence by descent in the same family. The base with three old labels, ‘656263,’ ‘1020,’ ‘69/19,’ and the neck with two labels, ‘V’ and ‘69/19’. Mentioned in the inventory of the collection, section V, Nr. 19, and described there as “Tao-Kuang Sang de Boeuf”. Alfred Julius Forkel (1873-1934) was born in Bavaria to Johann Wilhelm Forkel and Anna Dorothea Forkel. During his life, Forkel worked as a merchant and later as an officer with the Imperial German Navy. His travels as a merchant and as a naval officer took him across the globe. During his time in China, he assembled a large collection of Chinese porcelain and ceramics. Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and firing irregularities. A small chip to the rim and base, minor pitting, light scratches, and glaze recesses.Weight: 2,777 g Dimensions: Height 39.5 cm The form of this four-lobed vase supported by a broad foot rim directly references the crabapple (haitang), which could be combined with other emblems to create auspicious rebuses. Its second character, ‘tang’, is homophonous with the character for ‘hall’ and, by extension, ‘the family home’. The collection featured a comprehensive range of early Chinese porcelain as well as a noted group of Buccelatti and Puiforcat silver. Stuart G. Moldaw (1927-2008) was a retail pioneer and billionaire who founded Ross Stores. He was also a generous philanthropist who served on the boards of several nonprofit agencies, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art,. Weber, Chinese Pictorial Bronze Vessels of the Late Chou Period. Part III, published in Artibus Asiae, volume 29, number 2/3, 1967, pages 115-192. In this publication, the author provides a comprehensive analysis of pictorial bronze vessels from the late Zhou period and suggests that this type of decoration originated from Huixian, Henan province, from the 6th into the early 5th century BC.To properly evaluate the current lot, it is essential to compare it with the related examples found in the Fogg Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (see literature comparison). These institutions possess vessels attributed to significant tombs in the vicinity of Huixian. These vessels share several identical pictorial elements with the present lot, as illustrated in the accompanying diagram. These pictorial elements also serve as a basis for dating the current lot, as referenced in fig. 70 of Weber’s work, where the sinuous feline pictograms suggest a manufacture date of 500 B.C.Furthermore, page 151 of Weber's work highlights a pertinent observation. During the late Zhou period, pictorial decoration on these types of vessels was arranged irrespective of the placement of handles. Consequently, handles were often affixed over a portion of the pictorial representations, partially covering the design. This alignment further strengthens the connection of the present lot to the published examples, suggesting that it is not only closely related, originating from the same period and region, but also having a strong possibility of it originating from a neighboring site.China, late 6th-early 5th century BC. Superbly cast, the globular body supported on a tall spreading foot and rising to a waisted neck with a flared mouth, the shoulder set with two small lug handles. The body is finely inlaid with copper in five registers depicting geometrically arranged designs of pairs of birds, felines, and deer within lozenge borders which also encircle the foot, the body further interspersed by elaborate ruyi-like designs, the mouth and rim of the cover with line borders. The similarly decorated domed cover surmounted by a loop finial. Her right hand held in in varadamudra extending down her leg and her raised left holding a lotus stem which curls around her hand and arm coming to full bloom at the shoulder. Provenance: From an old German private collection.Condition: Remarkably well-preserved condition. Old wear, predominantly from centuries of worship within the culture, with some rubbing and minor losses to gilt. Minimal casting flaws, nicks and dents, occasional light scratches. Losses and possible replacements to inlays. Warping and dents to seal plate. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown, smooth patina overall.Weight: 908.1 g Dimensions: Height 16.2 cm She is clad in a dhoti neatly incised with rows of floral designs and a finely beaded hem, and richly adorned with a foliate crown, beaded necklace, belt, armlets and bracelets, and pendent earrings, all with fine turquoise inlays. Her serene face with sinuously-lidded downcast eyes below elegantly arched brows, her full lips forming a calm smile, her hair pulled up into a high chignon and falling elegantly in a twisted strand over her right shoulder and back. Heavily cast gilt copper alloy figures of this type are characteristic of the Densatil style, a Kagyu monastic complex in central Tibet, southeast of Lhasa, which has long been considered one of the great treasures of Tibet. Founded in the late 12th century, it enjoyed generous patronage and was lavishly decorated during a period of expansion from circa 1360 until the early 16th century. The monastery was known for eight extraordinary memorial stupas symbolizing Buddha's first teaching in Benares. These stupas were called tashi gomang, meaning ‘many doors of auspiciousness,’ and were multi-tiered copper-alloy structures filled with deities such as the present example, standing more than ten feet tall and resplendent with inlays of semiprecious stones. Prior to the destruction of Densatil during China’s Cultural Revolution (1966-1978), eight of them dating between 1208 and 1432 stood in the monastery’s main hall.Expert’s note: Close stylistic parallels can be drawn between the present work and a number of gilt bronze sculptures produced by Newari craftsmen for the Densatil Monastery. Chief among the diagnostic traits that can identify a work from Densatil are the convexly stepped eyebrows and the precisely incised double-lined eyelids and lips. The straight sides of the box and the cover are carved with angular scroll designs reserved against lozenge diaper. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Université Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France’s post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976). In 1964, the couple lent 174 objects from their collection to the Belgian city of Leuven’s museum for an exhibition titled Oude kunst in Leuvens Privébezit (‘Old Art in Private Collections in Leuven’), and in 1967 they lent around thirty Japanese objects to the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels for their exhibition Kunst van Japan im belgischen Privatverzameingen (‘Japanese Art in Belgian Private Collections’).Condition: Good condition with old wear and expected manufacturing irregularities. The narrow sides with stylized flowerheads, all reserved on a bright and remarkably even turquoise ground. AN UNUSUAL LOBED DING WARE ‘HIBISCUS’ BOX AND COVER, NORTHERN SONG TO JIN DYNASTY 北宋至金定窯海棠口方蓋盒Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert’s note: A distinctive aspect of the Ding kiln in Hebei province is that when placed underneath a very strong light, the white ware develops an orange hue, almost like a corona, especially where the ware is thinning, such as around the foot rim for example. This characteristic aspect makes objects from the Ding kilns easily identifiable and is due to the unique composition of the ware, which is mostly covered by a rather thick pale-ivory glaze. This ding box is also notable for its rather unusual shape for which we could not find any direct comparisons.China, c. 12th-13th century. The four-lobed square box stands on a short square foot with raised rim, and the cover is decorated with incision work, beading, and a central hibiscus flower medallion with four lines of beading extending from its petals.Provenance: From a private collection in the northeastern United States. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Signs of wear and light weathering, minuscule nicks to the edge of base and lid, expected firing flaws including several glaze recesses. The form slightly uneven overall.Weight: 106 g Dimensions: Width 7 cm Molded decoration on Ding wares was adopted in the latter part of the Northern Song dynasty and flourished during the Jin dynasty. The technique allowed the Ding potters to adopt more complex and also more formal designs. To the other side, ‘tong xin zhi yan’ (language of the same hearts), one seal, ‘bing hu’ (icy bottle).Of flattened spherical form with a flat lip and sapphire-blue oval foot rim surrounding a flat recessed base. Exquisitely carved through the outer sapphire-blue layer to the translucent milky-white body with a boy holding up a lotus bud in a sampan floating along a lotus pond. Above the boy is the inscription in Xiao Zhuan (Qin-dynasty seal script). The other side is similarly decorated with a Taihu rock and flowering orchids above a miniature grass planter on its stand as well as a Yixing pottery teapot and a teacup, all below butterflies hovering above and another inscription. The composition is painterly as well as scholastic, and the execution is demonstrative of complete mastery of the glass carving skills. The first inscription is a line from Ai Lion Shuo (Ode to the Lotus) by Zhou Dunyi (1017-1073). It compares the beauty of the lotus flower that grows unblemished from mud on the bottom of a pond to virtues men ought to possess. The seal ‘chen xin ru shui’ comes from the Biography of Zheng Chong in the Book of Han. Zheng was head of chancery in the court of Liu Xin who enjoyed the confidence of the Emperor until he began having problems with the Empress Dowager Fu and her court favorite Dong Xian. Zheng was in high demand as an official, but after falling from favor, the Emperor accused Zheng of embezzlement because of his fame. Zheng replied, ‘chen men ru shi, chen xin ru shui’ (It is like a bazaar outside my door, but my heart is as pure as water). By repute acquired from an old private estate in the Rhone valley. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, light soiling and staining, small losses and creases to picture, and light staining. Possibly microscopic touchups.Dimensions: Image size 65.5 x 48.3 cm, Size incl. frame 79.5 x 61.7 cm Painted with ink and distemper on cloth, matted and framed.The white bodhisattva of one thousand heads, arms, and eyes astride at center is known in Sanskrit as Sitatapatra, or Ushnisha Sitatapatra which can be translated as ‘The victorious white parasol’. It is believed that she is a powerful independent deity emanated by Gautama Buddha from his Ushnisha. In the Mahayana Sitatapatra Sutra, she is called Aparajita (‘Undefeatable, Unconquerable’) and is also identified as a form of goddess Tara, while in other sutras, she is regarded as a female counterpart to Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Her parasol symbolizes her ability to protect sentient beings from natural disasters and diseases. She is white in color because the primary means by which she performs this function is the enlightenment energy of pacification. Like Avalokiteshvara in his elaborate form, Ushnisha Sitatapatra has a thousand eyes that watch over living beings, and a thousand arms that protect and assist them. **REPLACEMENT CONDITION REPORT** 19th century portrait of a gentleman wearing a powdered wig, oil on canvas, unsigned, 78cm x 64cm, framed Canvas has been lined and professionally restored probably at least 50 years ago when the stretcher was also apparently replaced. I have examined the painting under UV light and there are very minor areas of re-touching particularly around the stretcher mark, and several other tiny areas of re-touching, all very honest conservation but no repaired tears, general light craquelure but paint all stable and presently in very good condition. Painting is from a local deceased estate
