An early 19th century continental officer’s dress sword, straight fullered blade 32½”, etched with trophies and florets and blued and gilt for one third length, gilt hilt with almost flat shell guard, the border deeply line engraved, a facetted crossguard and knucklebow, ovoid pommel with prominent stud and finely copper wirebound grip. A Georgian light cavalry officer’s sword, broad, curved, shallow fullered blade 29½”, etched with crowned GR cypher, simple trophy of arms and floral flourishes on one side and on the other with dismounted dragoon waving his sword and floral wreaths, gilt brass stirrup hilt with quillon and langets, facetted knucklebow, plain rounded pommel and backstrap, diced ivory grip (few small cracks and small chip), in its leather scabbard with locket, centre band and chape, with 2 rings, the gilt locket with oval engraved mark of “Salter, 35 Strand, Jeweller & Sword Cutler”. Good Condition, the hilt and scabbard retaining much original gilt (blade some wear and pitting patches) Plate 68
An English smallsword, c 1775, colichmarde blade 32”, faintly etched with trophy of arms and instruments on the broad face at forte and various devices on the 2 upper faces, steel hilt with scalloped edge and a little engraving to top of small oval dish guard, pas d’ane rings, crossguard with quillon, slightly swollen knucklebow, multi facetted ovoid pommel, simulated copper wirebound grip. Good Condition (some wear and light pitting to steel parts overall). Plate 69
A scarce French 8mm Gaulois “squeezer” pistol, 5” overall, barrel 2” stamped on the top flat with trade mark and “Gaulois”and numbered beneath the barrel T16554; body etched overall with a pattern of rosettes in panels and stamped at the breech “Cal. 8m/m No 2”, top of the body bearing the mark of “Manufacture Francaise Armes et Cycles, Saint Etienne”; with a safety catch on left side. Good Working Order and basically Good Condition (slightly worn with very light pitting, the chequered black hard rubber grip chipped). Plate 72
An impressive pair of 18 bore Bohemian long flintlock holster pistols, c 1740, 20” overall, flat topped slender bronze barrels 13” with blade fore sights and slight hollows to the breech tangs to act as rear sights, the breeches and top flats engraved with scrolls and panels; the brass partly rounded and slightly banana shaped locks engraved with scrolls and wavy borders and having bevelled pans, bevelled flat cocks and unbridled frizzens; walnut fullstocks carved with raised panels around the locks and mounts and with foliate scrolls beneath the fore end and around the breech tang and with horn fore end caps; the chiselled brass mounts comprise long spurred butt caps decorated with figures among scrolled foliage and with grotesque mask finials, open work sideplates with classical figure and scrolls, escutcheons with classical bust in panel surrounded by foliage and surmounted by coronet, trigger guards with bust amid foliage and foliate finials with feline mask, and hexagonal ramrod pipes, throat pipe finials with grotesque masks; with original horn tipped ramrods. Good Working Order and Condition (light surface rust to cocks, frizzens and frizzen springs, one barrel has some light dents, one throat pipe slightly dented). A 12 bore Russian Crimean War period percussion musket, 58” overall, barrel 42½ stamped “No 13244” and dated 1847 at the breech; back action lock dated 1847; fullstocked with regulation brass mounts including 3 barrel bands secured by spring catches; butt plate tang stamped with the Imperial eagle; with single sling swivel and original steel ramrod. Good Working Order and basically Good Condition (worn, barrel moderately pitted overall, light corrosion to the brass mounts). with its triangular socket bayonet. A large and impressive free standing early Victorian silver presentation trophy, the body embellished with applied branches of ivy, with free standing figure of a cavalry officer in full dress with shako, and holding a Union flag, on either side, elaborate acanthus leaf stem and base with scrolled feet, the body engraved “Presented to Lt. Colonel John Bennett Hearsey of the 6th Light Cavalry by Major General Watson and other officers of the Bengal Cavalry as a Small Token of their Regard and Esteem, 1846”. On the other side, in script, 18 battle honours “Delhi” to “Sobraon”, stepped lid with oak wreath rim and on the top a mounted figure of an officer with flag pole and pennant, Indian Hallmark on the base H & Co, an elephant, on trophy capital “A”, and trident head, height 18”, weight 8lbs 7ozs (3.84kg). Basically Very Good Condition (a few parts detached but present). Plate 8 Note: The hallmark is that of Hamilton & Co, Calcutta, a firm started by Robert Hamilton in 1808, which acquired numerous partners and opened branches all over India.
