ARAB-BYZANTINEGold solidus, undated (possibly circa 60-72h)OBVERSE: ddNNhC?CLI[…], facing busts of Heraclius (on left) and Heraclius Constantine (on right), each wearing chlamys and simple crown, no crosses on crowns and none in field between themREVERSE: VICTORIA – AVÇ? Z, pole surmounted by cross-bar on three steps, I –B in field to either side, in ex., CONOBWEIGHT: 4.20gREFERENCE: cf Bernardi 2 (obverse) / 4 (reverse); cf Miles, EAGC p.208, 3 (obverse) / p.209, 4 (reverse)CONDITION: Areas of weak striking on both sides, scrapes on reverse and light scratches on obverse, otherwise with minimal wear from circulation and so extremely fine for issue, extremely rare and historically important NOTE: This appears to be an unpublished variety for these extremely rare transitional pieces. Other specimens with the youthful portraits of Heraclius and his son on the obverse lack the indictional year I - B; this is normally found on solidi showing the three standing figures of Heraclius and his two sons (as Bernardi 4). The association of this indictional year 12 with an unrelated obverse type supports Bates’s view that the engravers ‘did not understand or care about the significance of these numbers and put them on their imitations merely because there were numbers on the prototype.’
