Ahmad, 2.42g (Vardanyan 11, same obverse die), light crease and small edge knock, almost very fine and very rare The Qarmatids were a radical Isma‘ili group, originally based in Arabia, who briefly expanded into Syria and Palestine after the fall of the Ikhshidids. Although they opposed the Abbasids they nevertheless continued to cite the Abbasid caliph on their coinage, along with the council of six or seven elders known as ‘the chief sayyids’ (al-sadat al-ru’asa) who governed the Qarmatid state.

* LOUISE RITCHIE, BLUESCAPE oil on canvas, 213cm x 213cm Unframed, as intended Note: Louise Ritchie gained a fine art degree and post graduate diploma in drawing & painting from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee. She has won several major awards including the Glasgow Art Club Fellowship, RGI (1998), the Scottish Art Club Award (1997), and the Millar Homes Paris Scholarship Citie Des Artes (1990). She has exhibited widely, including a solo show `Land Light Vision` at Glasgow`s Compass Gallery (1996), and at the London and Glasgow Art Fairs. Louise was also nominated for the Millar Homes Young Artist of the Year Award (1990 & 1991), and has work in several major collections including, the Mirror Group, London, Dundee District Council and Fife Regional Arts. She was elected to serve on the Council of the SSA, the Society of Scottish Artists in 1998, and has taught in academic institutions in Glasgow and Dundee. Louise was invited to perform within the installation `Killing Time`, a collaboration between artist Graham Fagen and Suspect Cultures Graham Eatough at Dundee Contemporary Arts (2006).
KIPLING RUDYARD: (1865-1936) English Author, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1907. T.L.S., Rudyard Kipling, one page, oblong 8vo, Bateman`s, Burwash, Sussex, 18th July 1916, to John E. T. Denman, marked Private. Kipling states that he has received his correspondent`s letter although regrets that he is unable to help with a poem for Denman`s magazine, explaining `I have undertaken certain work which must be finished by a definite time, and it does not give me an opportunity to undertake other commissions`. WILLIAM IV: (1765-1837) King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland 1830-37. A.L.S., William, two pages, 4to, Bushy House, 27th November 1815, to a gentleman. The Duke of Clarence thanks his correspondent for having offered to deliver letters to his sons in India, although remarks that he has already forwarded a large packet to the Board of Control. He continues `You have my full permission to show this letter to either of my sons as an introduction to them` and concludes by wishing his correspondent all success possible. Some extensive, light age wear and the central horizontal folds of the letter strengthened. G
ALBERT PRINCE: (1819-1861) Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, husband of Queen Victoria. L.S., Albert, as Acting Great Master of the Order of the Bath, one page, folio, Buckingham Palace, 21st June 1844, to Major General Sir Robert Henry Sale. The Prince announces `The Queen having been graciously pleased to issue a Royal Warrant dispensing with the ceremony of your Investiture and empowering you to wear and use the Star and Ribband and Badge of a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath in as full and ample a manner as if you had been formally invested by Her Majesty` and therefore adds that he has the duty to transmit to Sale the necessary decorations and Royal Warrant (neither present). With blank integral leaf. Some extremely minor, light age wear to the left edge, VG Major General Sir Robert Henry Sale (1782-1845) British Army Officer who commanded the garrison of Jalalabad during the First Afghan War 1841-42 and was killed in action during the First Anglo-Sikh War. Sale`s investiture, referred to in the present letter, did not take place as he was serving in India.
WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal & British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A.L.S., The Duke of Wellington, in the third person, one page, 8vo, London, 6th July 1830, to Mr. Leech (?). Wellington presents his compliments to his correspondent and confirms that he has received his letter. Some extremely light, very minor age wear, VG
