B2 Rare Robert Taylor "Helping Hand" signed by an impressive 16 famous Luftwaffe, USAAF, RAF and RCAF WW2 Aces and veterans. When originally issued in 1989, "Helping Hand" was signed only by the artist, Robert Taylor, this print being number 124 from an issue of 1250 and today is a sought after print in its own right. However, over the years this particular print has benefited greatly by being additionally autographed by 16 extremely well known WW2 aircrew from the Luftwaffe, the RAF and the USAAF including many leading Aces. This print is supplied with a Vector Fine Arts Certificate of Authenticity from 2007 confirming that this is one of just three prints to carry this combination of 16 autographs and giving details of the signatories (see photographs). This print is signed by the artist, Robert Taylor and Colonel Bob Morgan Pilot of the B-17 Memphis Belle, Lt. Colonel Francis "Gabby" Gabreski (Ace) 56th Fighter Group, General Gunther Rall (Ace) JG52, Lt. General Walter Krupinski (Ace) JG52 JV44, Colonel Don Blakeslee (Ace) Officer Commanding 4th Fighter Group, Lt. Colonel Robert S Johnson (Ace) 56th Fighter Group, Colonel "Hub" Zemke (Ace) Officer Commanding 56th Fighter Group, General Chesley "Pete" Peterson (Ace) Fourth Fighter Group, Wing Commander Geoffrey Page (Ace) 56 Squadron Battle of Britain, Colonel Walker Bud Mahurin (Ace) 56th Fighter Group, Air Vice Marshal Johnnie Johnson (Ace) Canadian Wing, Lt. Colonel Don Lopez (Ace) Flying Tigers, Major General Robert "Bob" Landry B-17 Pilot, Cliff Peterson P-51 Pilot, Squadron Leader Rod Smith (Ace) RCAF and 2nd Lieutenant John C "Red" Morgan Co Pilot B17 Congressional Medal of Honour Holder received for his actions during a 1943 bombing run over Germany, which also inspired the character of 2nd Lieutenant Jesse Bishop in the novel and film Twelve O' Clock High. The print measures approximately 84cm x 60cm (33 x 23. 5 inches) and has been stored flat, out of the light and is in very. Print Historical Detail: The scene is a familiar one back in 1944. A damaged B-17 Flying Fortress, down on power and speed, has lost touch with the formation and is alone in a hostile sky - easy prey for the enemy fighter. With crew members injured and unable to bale out, the skipper has elected to stay with his ship in an effort to bring his crew home. All on board knew the drill: Once hit, damaged, slowed down and unable to maintain their position in the formation they were on their own. Losing height and dropping out of the relative safety of the group they would become a prime target for the marauding high-altitude fighters of the Luftwaffe, and their chances of survival would be slim. But this day was different. Their luck was in! High above, a P-51 Mustang long-range escort pilot, himself low on both fuel and ammunition and weary from combat with German fighters, has assessed the plight of the B-17 and closed in to 'ride shotgun' for the long journey home. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99

This print is from the original Limited Edition number 233 / 1250 published in 1994 and is supplied with the original Certificate of Authenticity. The print is signed by the artist, Robert Taylor, and General Johannes "Macky" Steinhoff (1913 - 1994) who was a Luftwaffe fighter ace during World War II, German general, and NATO official. He was one of very few Luftwaffe pilots who survived to fly operationally through the whole of the war period 1939-45. Steinhoff was also one of the highest-scoring pilots with 176 victories, and one of the first to fly the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter in combat as a member of the Jagdverband 44 squadron led by Adolf Galland. The print measures approximately 84cm x 64cm (33 inches x 25. 25 inches) and has been stored flat, out of the light and is in very. Print Historical Detail: A unique limited edition published in tribute to one of the Luftwaffe's highest scoring Aces, and greatest fighter leaders. Macky Steinhoff in action over the White Cliffs of Dover. It is August, and the height of the Battle of Britain: Heinkel 111 bombers have attacked airfields and radar stations along the south coast, and a frantic dog-fight has developed as Bf109s of JG-52 clash with Hurricanes of the RAF's No. 32 Squadron. Macky's Bf109E, which dominates the picture, provides a magnificently detailed study of this superlative fighter, as he and his fellow Luftwaffe pilots do their best to protect the retreating Heinkels. Below is a wonderful panoramic aerial view of Dover Harbour, the legendary White Cliffs, and the carefully researched landscape showing the south-eastern tip of the British Isles as it was in 1940. Big Brothers and Little Friends - this was the enduring bond between the bomber crews and fighter pilots of the USAAF Eighth Air Force in their prolonged and hotly contested air war against Hitler's Nazi Germany, 1942-1945. Renowned Aviation Artist Gerald Coulson has reconstructed the deadly war game being played out in the icy, thin stratosphere high above a hostile territory, February 1944. Good condition. GEORGE IV – MARIA FITZHERBERTAutograph drafts of four letters, two signed with initials ('M.F'), written by Mrs Fitzherbert to George IV as Prince Regent, referring throughout to their marriage ('...the memorable event of our Union... in the year /85/ under circumstances which made [corrected to rendered] you the only person in this world while life endured that I could ever look up to for protection & support, bound by every tie that Honor or Religion could impose...'), her 'pecuniary difficulties', pursuing the pension promised on their marriage ('...for the first time in the course of nearly 28 years... I claim it...') and support for the 'proper education and maintenance of my beloved Child', apologising for any suffering she has caused him and wishing him 'every degree of happiness', with deletions and amendments throughout, two with autograph endorsements ('Copy of our letters To the Regent' and 'Letter to the P.'); with wrapper annotated '7/ Letters sealed/ by the Executor/ March 31 1837/ G.H./ from Mrs Fitzherbert/ to HRH/ The Prince of Wales', remains of black wax seal, 13 pages, creased at folds, light dust staining, 4to (234 x 190mm.), [no place], one dated 15 August 1814 [1808-1814]Footnotes:'AS YOUR WIFE I FEEL I HAVE A CLAIM UPON YOUR PROTECTION': Retained letters of Mrs Fitzherbert saved from the flames, the only remaining record of the lost originals. These drafts are a rare survival. As the note on the accompanying wrapper attests they were part of a small cache of papers chosen by Mrs Fitzherbert to be retained with the agreement of the King's executors and placed in a sealed box at Coutts bank (see preceding lot). On her death they passed to Minney Seymour, who is mentioned in the letters, and thence to her son the fourth Earl of Portarlington, and were offered as part of the Portarlington Papers at Sotheby's on 22 July 1985, lot 362. The catalogue for that sale describes how virtually all the correspondence between her and the King, 'except for a small handful' was burnt on 24 August 1833 at her house in Tilney Street in the presence of the Duke of Wellington, Lord Albemarle and Lord Stourton. The correspondence was seen as an embarrassment to the Royal Family and every effort was taken to suppress any evidence of their secret marriage. She makes reference to this displeasure here: '...I have reason to believe Sir that your ear has been frequently assailed by Malignant insinuations against me...', she writes. The quantity of manuscripts was so great that the process took several hours, and the conflagration was such that Lord Albemarle's son feared that 'we shall set the old woman's chimney on fire' (Shane Leslie, Mrs Fitzherbert, 1939, p.xiv). Other letters to the King were also sought out and destroyed, so these retained drafts are the only remaining record of the lost originals. They were published in Shane Leslie's The Letters of Mrs Fitzherbert and Connected Papers, 1940.Our letters were written after she had been abandoned by the Prince and are attempts to secure a pension and financial support for herself and her daughter. It is with 'great reluctance' that she troubles the Prince, and reminds him that, mindful of his own financial troubles ('...I knew your income was then so limited that you had it not in your power...'), she has hitherto never 'solicited any provision'. Now, however, she finds herself unable to pay her debts, in particular the extra cost of £300 for the building of her house in Brighton ('...Mr P [the architect William Porden] has thought proper to outrun the Estimate... I had scraped every farthing I'd collect & had frequently deprived myself of many comforts to pay...') and, threatened with jail, she mentions plans to go to the Continent. She comes to him in desperation: '...I had piqued myself that neither my House in Town or at Brighton had ever cost you one farthing... for tho' we have now been married three and twenty years I never at any period solicit you for assistance... The first object of my Heart was your happiness and prosperity... as your wife I feel I have a claim upon your Protection...'.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

GEORGE IIIAutograph letter signed and subscribed ('Your most affectionate Father/ George R') to his son Fredrick, Duke of York ('My dear Frederick'), looking forward to seeing him on Sunday and expressing his displeasure at '...the unfair conduct of the King of Prussia coming more to light every day...', fearing that '...we shall soon see that he has permitted the French to place a Garrison in the Town of Osnaburg, and probably from there advance into my Electorate... the idea of bringing home the Cavalry seems not to be given up...', one page, creased at folds otherwise in clean, fresh condition, narrow paper window mount, 4to (230 x 185mm.), Weymouth, 22 September 1795Footnotes:'THE UNFAIR CONDUCT OF THE KING OF PRUSSIA': George III writes to his son as Commander-in-Chief of the army during the French Revolutionary Wars to relate his concerns that the King of Prussia, after signing the Peace of Basel with France in April 1795, would let French troops overrun Hanover from nearby Osnaburg.Whilst George III at this time ruled both the electorate of Hanover and Britain and whilst William Pitt reiterated in the Commons that 'the Elector of Hanover will never separate himself from the King of England', our letter seems to reinforce the theory by historians such as Guy Stanton Ford that it was Prussian rather than English interests that determined Hanover's fortunes. George III's fears expressed here that Hanover would be occupied by Prussian troops were not realised until March 1801 when Tsar Paul of Russia, then a friend of France, coerced Frederick William III to temporarily occupying the Electorate (see Stanton Ford, Hanover & Prussia, 1796-1803: A Study in Neutrality, 1903, review by Sidney B. Died 30th November 1917. Aged 28'. By his Mother', manuscript, c.130 pages, ink on lined paper, 20 photographs of Townsend (one loose) and several newspaper cuttings pasted in, contemporary half morocco gilt, by Maclehose of Glasgow, t.e.g., slightly rubbed, 4to (285 x 220mm.), [1921] (3)Footnotes:Finely presented memorials, written up by their mother, to two Scottish brothers who died within three weeks of each other fighting on different fronts during the First World War. Both were born in Scotland and educated at Rugby School (where they served in the cadets). The youngest, Eric, (born 1894), joined the 5th Highland Light Infantry on leaving school and was mobilized for action on 5 August 1914, the day after war was declared. His letters home, at times sent almost daily, provide a vivid account of his war from departure at Devonport Docks aboard the Transylvania (2 June 1915), to Malta, action in Gallipoli, transfer to Egypt (action and hospitalisation), to Palestine where - a few weeks after jokingly asking his mother 'Is Haggis postable?' for Christmas - he noted in his last letter on 4 November 1917 'Dear Mother... The war has started again here, but we are entirely out of it... in fact enjoying bathes in the sea!' Just four days later he died in combat, battling with the Highlanders for a Ridge, 'taken and re-taken four times, and it was in one of these advances that Eric was killed, I think by a machine gun' according to a note from a Captain of his company. He was first buried at the village of Deir Sineid, prior to removal to the Military Cemetery at Gaza. Handsomely presented in a Riviere binding, the album includes upwards of 100 photographs, some depicting Townsend, the Highlanders, street scenes and antiquities.Eric's elder brother Ronald (born 1889) had emigrated to Canada in 1913, but at the outbreak of war jointed the 50th Gordon Highlanders. Due to his training in accountancy he was assigned to a desk-bound position at the Pay Office to the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Desperate to take a more active role in the war (he pictured a situation that when asked by his children what he had done in the war his reply would be 'Signed Cheques!'), he resigned in April 1917, gained his 'Wings' with the Royal Air Force by mid-June, and was sent in mid-October to France. Here, just 22 days after the death of his brother Eric in Palestine, his aeroplane was hit 'when leading a flight over the enemy's line at Lesdain, near Cambrai... and he made the supreme sacrifice'. A memorial plaque to the brothers is to be found at St. Ninian's Church, Troon, Argyll. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

TURING (ALAN)Autograph letter signed ('Yours Alan') to Alfred William Beuttell ('Dear Mr Beuttell'), returning his notes on the Monte-Carlo system '...with a few notes on what I imagine is the explanation of its success...', going on to say '...I remember your telling me a few months ago that a method for calculating the illumination level on the working plane in a room was rather badly needed. Of course one could not expect to get a simple & accurate formula for anything so complicated...', followed by detailed explanations illustrated by an equation ('...It is illuminated by a uniform point source of candle power I placed at the centre... I am sure there is no need for me to say how one would apply it in practice... I just thought this one might be of use to you...'), sending '...Regards to everyone, and please don't feel there is any need to answer these ravings of mine...'; together with the above-mentioned four-page analysis of the Monte-Carlo system headed 'Gambling System', concluding '...The general effect is when that for short runs one most probably wins or else once loses an unexpectedly large sum. As the length of the run is increased the chances of winning becomes more remote & is negligible for 100,000 spins...', 7 pages in all on King's College headed paper, light dust staining, creased at folds, rust stain from old paperclip, 8vo (178 x 134mm.), Cambridge, 2 February [19]33Footnotes:'PLEASE DON'T FEEL THERE IS ANY NEED TO ANSWER THESE RAVINGS OF MINE': ALAN TURING'S ANALYSIS OF THE MONTE-CARLO GAMBLING SYSTEM & WORK ON A NEW METHOD OF LIGHTING.Turing's analysis of the Monte-Carlo Gambling System is couched in the language of mathematics and equations but put simply, by working out the probability of winning at increasing increments of 150, 1,520, 4,560 and 30,400 spins he proved mathematically that the longer you play, the probability of losing money increases – '...for short runs one most probably wins or else one loses an unexpectedly large sum. As the length of run is increased the chances of winning becomes more remote...', he confirms. The recipient of our letter, Alfred William Beuttell (1880-1965) was the father of Turing's schoolfriend Victor Beuttell (see the following lot). After leaving Sherborne, the boys remained close and Turing spent much time with the Beuttell family. Alfred had made his fortune by inventing and patenting the Linolite electric strip reflector lamp (better known now as the striplight) in 1901, his first important contract being a system of continuous lighting for the Coronation of Edward VII, manufactured by the Edison and Swan Electric Company with whom he had a long association. Buoyed by his company's success pre-war he enjoyed the life of a wealthy bachelor – flying (he met Bleriot and watched the Wright brothers), motor racing and sailing. He spent several months at Monte Carlo operating with some success his own gambling system. Stories of having lived for a month on his winnings piqued the young Turing's interest whilst staying with the family over Christmas 1932 after the death of Victor's mother in November: '...He showed Alan his gambling system, which Alan took back to Cambridge and studied. On 2 February 1933 he wrote back with the result of his analysis, which was that the system yielded an expected gain of exactly zero, and that accordingly Mr Beuttell's winning had been entirely due to luck and not to skill...' (Hodges, A., Alan Turing: The Enigma, 2014, p.89). Our letter is hitherto unpublished, but his biographer Andrew Hodges mentions it with reference to a letter Turing wrote to his friend Norman Routledge in 1953 mentioning the odds of being arrested for homosexuality: '...Alan Turing used logarithms of betting odds as the key to the work he had done for the 'racket' of cryptography, and his sustained fascination with probability is illustrated by that reference [in Routledge's letter] to a one-in-ten chance of being caught. In his 1953 stoic humour there is a link with innocent Anti-War undergraduate days of twenty years earlier when he analysed Alfred Beuttell's Monte Carlo gambling system...' (Hodges, p.xxxi). Whilst his analysis here was a light-hearted exercise, Turing's work on probability had wider implications, and his research paper, The Applications of Probability to Cryptology, in which he applied vigorous probability analysis to a wide range of cryptoanalytic problems, was key to the decryption work undertaken at Bletchley Park.Turing also helped Beuttell in his pioneering work in the scientific measurement of illumination. In 1927 Beuttell had taken out patents on a new invention, the 'K-ray Lighting System', designed to allow uniform illumination of pictures of posters within a glass box and in Turing he found the perfect person to find the right formula for the curvature of the glass. Turing '...suddenly produced the formula, without being able to explain it, which agreed with Alfred Beuttell's calculation. But Alan went further, and pointed out the complication which arose through the thickness of the glass, which would cause a second reflection on the front surface. This made necessary a change in the curve of the K-ray System which was soon put into application for exterior hanging signs, the first contract being with J. Lyons and Co., Ltd, the catering chain... it always delighted Alan that a mathematical formula could actually work in the physical world. He had always liked practical demonstrations, even though he was not good at them...' (Hodges, p.73-4). By the early 1930's Beuttell's work as a specialist lighting consultant brought him large projects such as the illumination of the Freemason's new headquarters in London, which Turing also advised on. Our letter provides a formula for the illumination of the floor of a hemispheric room lit from its centre, a problem which they had previously discussed ('...I just thought this one might be of use to you...'). During the Second World War, the Linolite company became the main supplier of hose clips for the de-icing systems of bomber aircraft but reverted back their main activity in 1945. The company remained in Malmesbury until its closure in 1993.A photograph of Alfred Beuttell at the time this letter was written and a copy of his biography The Man Who Made Linolite is included in the lot.Provenance: Alfred Beuttell (1880-1965); Victor Beuttell (1915-1993); and thence by descent. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
