Roman Provincial Coinage, EGYPT, Alexandria, Commodus, Tetradrachm, yr 29 [188-9], laureate bust right, rev. view of galley sailing past Pharos Lighthouse, date below, 12.72g (Milne 2683-4; Dattari 3903). Good very fine, centrally struck with attractive metallic surfaces, very rare thus £700-£900 --- The lighthouse of Alexandria, a masterpiece of Greek architecture which pioneered the architectural form of these structures, came to be considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Constructed on the island of Pharos during the reign of Ptolemy Philadelphos, it was designed to help guide merchants and travellers into Alexandria’s two harbours, away from the shallows and reefs that ran along the nearby coastline. Unfortunately, the structure is now lost, having been destroyed by several earthquakes. Reconstructions, based on surviving literary evidence and artistic depictions such as that seen on this coin, indicate that it originally stood around 115 metres above sea level and that its light was visible from some 34 miles distant.
Roman, a silver ring of the emperor Postumus, c. 265-269, internal diameter 21 mm, weight 11.89g, Henig type VIII (keeled type) ridged hoop with a pelta design, wide triangular shoulders decorated with chevrons, angled to a raised octagonal bezel which is recessed and inset with a gold foil wrapped denarius of Postumus, Cologne mint, 265-9, (post)vmvs pivs felix avg, jugate laureate busts of Postumus and Hercules facing left (RIC 350 [rev. Hercules walking left]). Good very fine with a few light surface marks £3,000-£4,000 --- This imposing ring is likely to be a military award for a successful campaign under the commander Marcus Cassianius Latinus Postumus, who ruled the Gallic Empire (which included Gaul, Germania, Britannia and Hispania) for ten years.
Early Anglo-Saxon Period, Sceatta, Secondary series L, type 12, diademed and draped bust right, cnoonai above, rev. standing figure holding two long crosses, 1.00g/9h (SCBI Abramson 494; Abramson 23.10; N 63; S 804). Light surface porosity, hairline striking split at 1 o’clock, otherwise very fine, and very rare £600-£800
Edward IV (First reign, 1461-1470), Light coinage, Ryal, Coventry, mm. sun on rev. only, c in waves, trefoil and double trefoil stops, lis in spandrels, 7.67g/12h (SCBI Schneider 421, same obv. die; B & W VI, 1; N 1551; S 1955). Nearly extremely fine, an attractive example of this very rare issue £6,000-£8,000 --- The Coventry mint, in the charge of John Worlege and Thomas Melson, was opened on 6 July 1465 but had closed by 16 September (BNJ XXV, pp.11-15)
