ALCOCK & BROWN: ALCOCK JOHN (1892-1919) English Pilot & BROWN ARTHUR WHITTEN (1886-1948) British Navigator, together they completed the first successful non-stop transatlantic flight, June 1919. An unusual, original pen and ink sketch by an unidentified artist, showing Alcock & Brown's Vicker Vimy aircraft in flight. Signed by both Alcock ('J. Alcock') and Brown ('A W Brown') with their names alone in dark brown fountain pen ink to a clear area of the drawing. The artist has annotated the sketch Transatlantic Flight, 14th -15th June 1919 at the head and also added the date, 16th June 1919 (when the signatures were obtained) at the base. Rare and unusual in this form. A couple of minor, light water stains slightly affect both signatures, although they remain perfectly legible. Some very slight age wear to the edges, G The vendor's Grandfather, who was on holiday in Ireland at the time Alcock & Brown completed their flight, had followed the aviator's historic flight in the newspapers and were present to see the landing at Clifden. It was shortly afterwards that his drawing was signed.

WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal & British Prime Minister. L.S., Wellington, two pages, 4to, 3rd October 1812, to Sir Charles Stuart (1779-1845, British Diplomat, Ambassador to France 1815-24, 1828-30). Wellington states that he has received Stuart's letter, and one from Forjay, regarding means of Transport, and continues to explain 'It is not in my power as Commander of the British Army to make an advance of £15,000 upon a speculation….to procure means of Transport for the Army, even though I should be convinced that it would be successful.' further adding 'I am convinced however not only that the proposed scheme will not produce any good effect but that it will aggravate all the existing evils. It is not necessary that I should trouble you with my reasons for entertaining this opinion, as what I have stated above is a sufficient answer to the proposition made to me, as Commander in Chief of the British Army; but if the Portuguese Government think proper to call for my opinion…they shall have it.' [PERRY MATTHEW C.]: (1794-1858) American Commodore of the U.S. Navy, compelled the opening of Japan to the West with the Convention of Kanagawa, 1854. A wooden cane, featuring a rounded ivory top, previously belonging to Commodore Perry and made from wood taken from the hull of the flagship U.S.S. Lawrence, commanded by his brother Commodore Oliver Perry at the Battle of Lake Erie (1813). The dark wooden cane features a small silver lined hole 4.5" below the ivory handle and two small inlaid engraved plaques, one reading 'Com. O. H. Perry's victory, Lake Erie, Sept. 10th AD 1813' and the other engraved with a quote by Perry, being his famous message of victory, 'We have met the enemy and they are ours'. Some light age wear and evidence of a break in the cane, neatly repaired. Accompanied by several copies of detailed letters giving excellent provenance. An historic relic of the War of 1812 fought between the United States of America and the British Empire. G Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819) American Commodore of the United States Navy who earned the title 'Hero of Lake Erie' for leading the American forces to a decisive naval victory in the Battle of Lake Erie on 10th September 1813.

Frank was prosecuted, and later executed, at the Nuremberg Trials for his role in perpetrating the Holocaust during his tenure as Governor- General of occupied Poland. T.L.S., Frick, one page, 4to, Berlin, 9th January 1941, to SS Gruppenfuhrer Richard Hildebrandt, on the printed stationery of the Reich Minister of the Interior, featuring a blind embossed Nazi Eagle and Swastika, in German. Frick thanks his correspondent for the good wishes he had sent him at the turn of the year and very warmly reciprocates them. Very light age wear to the edges and two file holes to the left edge, not affecting text or signature. About VG. QUISLING VIDKUN: (1887-1945) Norwegian Fascist Politician, Minister Present of Occupied Norway 1942-45. Quisling was executed following a trial for high treason. Concluding second page of a T.L.S., Quisling, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (apparently written whilst Defence Minister 1931-33) to the Water Supplies Office in Oslo, in Norwegian. Quisling comments on the laying of water pipes from the Kjoia road in Telemark province and states that a proportion of the cost of the work, approximately 50 kroner, will be met by the military but will be reimbursed upon application by the Captain to the appropriate department at Akersus Castle. Four file holes to left edge, not affecting the text or signature. Some light creasing, about VG
